We were referred to John Davis for guidance in estate planning and value of a trust in our situation. John was a good listener, collected family dynamics, challenged our ideas, focused our thoughts and in the end developed a great workable plan. Since we don't speak "Lawyer-ese" and the "Trust" concepts were unfamiliar, the one thing that finely helped pull everything together and sealed the deal, was a visual "graphic" presentation with decision points, arrows and boxes. Thanks John, .... You Done Good

I would highly recommend Devon Newman to all entrepreneurs who are walking through the patenting process. She has walked beside me every step of the way. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, passion, and personal investment in all of my projects were so encouraging during this long process. I know that I was not her biggest client, but she always made time for me and made me feel just as important. She also acted as my account manager. It was great to have one contact that took care of aligning the right people in different departments and together they helped me succeed. I have had my first trade marks and patent approved and I couldn't have done it without Devon.

We engaged the JPE law firm to help us with estate planning, trusts and a real estate transaction. This lawyer could not have been more helpful, practical and professional. At every turn, Mr. Edwards met or exceeded out expectations. He is the perfect attorney for the small business or entrepreneur. We recommend him wholeheartedly.

Dana represented me she did an excellent job. She was extremely easy to work with and does not back down. She fights for her client like no other attorney I've seen before. If you have a employment case I recommend Dana 100% . I wasted my time and money with numerous other attorneys until I found Dana she accepted my case and it was game over for my ex employer. Thank you Dana you changed my future for the better.

I hired Ashley at a time in my life when I desperately needed a powerful advocate in my corner. Ashley represented me as one of the many women who were subjected to sexual harassment in Oregon's State Legislature. She always put my needs first and she worked hard to bring accountability to the people and systems that have avoided it for too long. I appreciate all of the time, effort, professionalism, and dedication Ashley put into protecting my privacy, fighting for me, communicating with me, and bringing justice to a really terrible time in my life. I highly recommend Ashley and her firm.

Doctor Aaron Deshaw took my case when it was at its most hopeless. As a brain injury survivor himself, he was as kind and compassionate to someone with a brain injury as anyone could hope for. As a doctor, his knowledge and expertise were invaluable in navigating the complexities of a trial that depended on medical evidence. As an attorney, he's a ROCK STAR!(Sorry, did it again.) As an attorney, I believe his bravery (to go forward with a case that he was told was near hopeless), his brilliance, and his wisdom are unsurpassed in the legal field. His belief in me sustained me through a long, difficult, but ultimately triumphant journey. He never failed to return a phone call or e-mail, to keep me informed, or just reassure me that he understood when I was doing silly things brain injured people do. If you are unlucky enough to have suffered a brain injury, you would be lucky to have Doctor Aaron DeShaw as your lawyer. Delani Stephens

Since Day 1 I have been very happy with Taylor supporting me as my attorney. As an owner of two businesses, one of which is still budding, I have contracts and agreements that need to be reviewed by attentive, critical eyes and amended with ideas to solidify my stance and protect me and my businesses. Taylor fulfills these needs, on-time every time, and I know she and the JJH team are focusing on my case at that moment. She also explains jargon to me in a simplified manner so I can best understand how the language in the documents will impact me and my businesses. If you are seeking an attorney to handle your needs for business law or employment law, I highly recommend contacting Taylor and JJH Law. Thank you, Taylor! Cheers, Erin

Mr. Rollin just won a case for me and stopped the deportation proceedings. It was a very difficult time for me and my family, and Mr. Rollin was the only lawyer who was willing to listen and try every option available out there for my case. My family and I are so thankful to Mr. Rollin for his honesty, understanding and trying his best to resolve my case favorably. Without a hesitation, I would refer Mr. Rollin to all my friends and family if they ever need an immigration lawyer. Thank you very much for all your hard work!

I ended up hiring Whitney based on a recommendation. Whitney assisted me down a difficult, confusing path. Against my better judgement, Whitney convinced me to move forward and take my case to trial. I had never been more scared in my life. The way I understood it I had everything to loose and little to gain. Whitney advice was spot on, he successful exaunerated my record and I will live free from any legal restrictions for the rest of my life. Whitney worked around my schedule, met with me on weekends in the evening, pretty much held my hand the every step of the way. He is worth every single penny I paid for his service and I can not thank him enough.

If you're up against Ms.O'Kasey Esq, you better have one heck of a case and one heck of a lawyer. I had the honor to be desposed by her over a lawsuit where she was defending a Warren Buffet company. I had studied her work for a few years and she is definitely of a higher echelon than many of the ivy league lawyers that I had studied (cousin/in-law to my kids) J VanKirk and Others. She's highly competitive and will do things outside of the box to win. If you have to choose between O'Kasey or other prominent firms, Okasey's skill set, competitive nature and dedication to the art of lawyering is unmatched. She's the authority at court, judges listen to her. Very hard for any judge to go against her and perhaps would be an uncommon occurrence for that to happen.

Ms. Snyder is an extremely competent attorney. She was always in touch with my case, went out of way to speak with me directly, (rather than have her staff make the calls) and always kept me informed of the status of my case. I can not express how pleased I am with the outcome of my case. I could not be happier. I highly recommend Ms. Snyder to anyone that is looking for an attorney. She will stand up for your rights.

I hired Steven to represent me regarding a motor vehicle crash. He was very honest and sincere. He was very thorough and had a full understanding of what I was facing. His concern was for justice, as opposed to making money for himself. Through my lifetime, I have dealt with about a half a dozen attorneys and Steven is by far the most honest and sincere attorney I have met. Regardless of any legal problem I might have, Steven will be the first attorney I will contact.

We had foolishly gone to an inexperienced attorney for my wife's immigration needs and were given bad advice, wrong advice, and were in shock by what the first atty had told us. I did a great deal of research and made a lot of phone calls and the one name on every one's short list of who's who in Oregon Immigration attorneys was Mr. Mei with Davis Wright and Tremaine. They were right he took his time and explained everything, answered every question and his staff was the best and most professional I have dealt with. Pay the extra money and hire a man who knows his stuff...it's money well spent.

David Carter is currently representing me in a show cause hearing in Washington County, Oregon. So far we have only met once to go over the case, but he did help put me at ease after reviewing the facts of my case. I did help him out by turning over some of my legal research to him, but he likely would have found the same info that I found. I understand that attorneys are busy people and whatever work that I can do aiding my own defense frees him up to do more work for myself and others. Will update as the case proceeds. Looking forward to giving Mr. Carter a 5 star rating!

Cordelia, aka "cordy", is a very smart, very skilled attorney. She is a fighter at the right times, and smart/calculating at other times. She knows when to go which route to get results. She is very down to earth, and not afraid to tell you or anyone else how it is - Which is A GOOD THING. Would you want an attorney who beats around the bush and is "ho hum" about things? I know I did not, nor do want. I feel very lucky to have been assigned her as my attorney. If you are having a difficult go of things no matter what you do, and really need a skilled attorney for complex issues - she is the person to have on your side. I cannot say enough good things about her. Her support staff is also outstanding. Top of the line in my opinion. They got back to me on the rare occasion they did not answer their phones even know they are very busy. I could also get ahold of Cordelia just about any time I needed her, and if not, she too would get back to me that same day; even if she was running out the door. She always listened to me, never talked down to me for my ideas, and really tried to make my voice heard. She could go anywhere and make the BIG DOLLARS, but she is working at Multnomah Defenders - that should speak alot about her, too. She obviously cares alot about families and helping them navigate this so-so system we have. A++++++++++++++++++

5stars plus 10! I was referred to the Duboff law group by another small business owner. I am so greatful for that referral. Colleen is amazing has been there to help me every step of the way. Between Rudy’s legal knowledge and expertise and Collens attentiveness I am now a proud business owner. I purchased their book the “law in plain English for small businesses” and am empowered with so much knowledge. They were also my first clients! The DuBoff Law group is the back bone to my company and I would recommend them to anyone looking to build a successful brand. Like they say the love helping people achieve their dreams. Thank you for helping me turn my dreams into a reality. Thank you for all you do.

Eric was chosen to represent us in a lawsuit that was filed regarding an injury on a former property that we sold. The plaintiffs Attorney's were known to be very successful at representing individuals for this type of case. From the day that we were introduced to Eric he made us feel comfortable and took much of our worry away, I should say, "as much as he could when your'e being sued." We were defendants and the new home owner was the other defendant and had their own councel. Once Jury selection and the cross examination began it was clear that the plaintiffs attorney didn't want my attorney in the courtroom. He was articulate and fearless, played very well with the co defendant Attorney and had a clear path in his mind to victory. The co defendants Attorney also did very well but Eric picked up the ball where he left off in cross examination and made the facts very transparent. After only 2 days in a 5 day trial, the plaintiffs attorney's dismiss the case against us. Im sure there were many reasons for that decision but I truly believe that their motivation was to get Eric Schilling out of there before he destroyed the credibility of their plaintiff and witnesses. Thank you Eric for your professionalism and a superb job representing us in this case. You are Top Notch! The Martin's

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
