I contacted Vivien Lyon regarding an odd domestic abuse/tenant situation and she was instantly on the case. Ms. Lyon offered practical advice, delivered well-written C&D letters, was proactive in following up with police and landlord and always knew what she was talking about. She was 100% on my side, never negating my experiences or failing to set my feet firmly back on solid ground. All in all, this was the best experience I have ever had with an attorney, and I highly recommend Ms. Lyon's legal ability and personal commitment to anyone who has ever preferred to crawl into a ditch rather than deal with another awful attorney. Ms. Lyon is the real deal, and she prices herself to be available to those of us without trust funds.

Through that site Mr. O'Connell offered a half hour free consultation. He called and answered several questions thoroughly and with a respectful demeanor and in a way I can understand. Due to the complexity of my situation ( dealing with a deceitful personal representative and her lawyer) Mr. O'Connell continued to assist and answer questions via email. He went above and beyond to help me even at times being a buffer between me and the personal representative and her attorney. This helped A LOT ! Without Mr. O'Connell and his exceptional assistant's interaction and daily communication I would not have been able to retrieve family heirlooms and sentimental items, they were headed for the dump since spite is my families coping method. I am forever grateful to Mr. O'Connell and Mrs. Snelling for their professional, above and beyond work with their exceptional understanding and respectful mannerisms in handling me and my situation.

I contacted Todd's office after another attorney turned down my case. On my very first call I was able to speak with Todd directly and was reassured when he agreed to take my case. His office went to work immediately, contacting my medical providers and doing a time consuming review of my medical records. We were up against a tough auto insurer but Todd stuck with It, refusing to cave in to their unreasonable settlement offers. He stayed in close contact with me until my case was resolved to my satisfaction.

I first met Will in 1987 when he was recommended to me and a contingent of officers after I asked the Executive Director of the National Association of Police Organizations who the best police labor attorney was. With no hesitation, the gentleman told us "Will Aitchison." We arranged a meeting, and after a short introductory meeting, a trip was arranged in which Will made a presntation to our Executive Board. He was hired on the spot. His guidance and legal expertise became invaluable to our organization as we wound up in court on issues such as binding arbitration, drug testing, and shift hours. We also negotiated several contracts in the most adverse labor environment imaginable. Will became as much consigliore as he was attorney, and to this day represents our union with a level of ethics, professionalism, and effectiveness that a once adversarial management team now considers a resource in dealing with complicated labor issues and matters of employee relations.

I went through these referral services and was directed to Megan. I have not hired her yet(full disclosure),but I think she deserves a recommendation regardless. She is absolutely the most patient person, who took our information ,numerous emails and documents to review prior to our consult. She even offered to reschedule when I couldn't get one document in time for the consultation ,as to maximize my time and money. Not only are we so appreciative of your efforts, but you have honor not present in most people today. It was just so reassuring to know you wanted me to get the most benefit from our conversation. I will look forward to our future ones! Thank you truly for doing business the way you do. When you arrive at a point where you need counsel,it can be so stressful-its very nice to know on the end of the phone is someone who truly wants to help you. Best-

I was cited for trespassing by Tri-Met and hired Mr. Blake to defend my case. Mr. Blake successfully had my ticket dismissed at trial and demonstrated a thorough understanding of the law -- so much so that the officer who had given the citation approached Mr. Blake after the conclusion of trial for advice. I found Mr. Blake to be honest, straightforward, and helpful in dealing with my case. I felt comfortable throughout the process even though this was my first experience with the legal system. I recommend him highly!

Mr. Hunt was very professional from beginning to end with our family member's case (Daughter). I am quite knowledgeable in Employee Law and enjoyed hearing what I knew to be true, repeated in fact without reservations. We had seeked several other State Employee Lawyers that basically said we didn't have a case. Mr. Hunt saw the potential right off and won the suit in an out of court settlement in the amount he said could be achieved.

We met Matthew J. at another firm. When he moved over to JJH Law, he asked if we wanted him to continue with our case and we answered with an emphatic Yes. Matthew guided my Wife and I through a very difficult, very personal case. He was very thorough throughout and in the end steered us clear of a very bad decision with facts and common sense. We are very thankful for his guidance and advice through what usually becomes an ardouos litigious process. Matthew has joined a great firm, and has now made it better with what he brings to the table. We certainly would recommend Matthew and JJH Law.

Mr. Foster helped us understand and navigate the confusing legal system with compassion and unwavering commitment to recovering our damages. He was a clear headed advocate for the four and half years that it took to resolve our complicated case. Brooks always listened to our concerns intently. His strategies were always spot on while dealing with DEQ, environmental consultants, multiple insurance companies and some of the most prestigious law firms in Portland, Oregon. All correspondence, access agreements, complaints, summary judgments to the court and opposing counsel were always concise and captured the essence of our case. Thus leaving the court with little doubt as to the level of harm that had been done to us and our desire to be made whole. Due to Mr. Foster's attention to detail he saved us tens of thousands of dollars in costs. When we were feeling desperate with our situation we always knew we could contact Brooks and he would clearly explain the risks and benefits of our case, rendering us with the confidence that we were on the right path. In fact, due to his straight forward, astute, energetic representation we prevailed. Brooks treated us with respect and understanding, making us feel we were more than just a client. We will be forever indebted to him for an outstanding job!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
