Sherilyn Waxler helped us with our case through the entire process, and saw us through to a successful resolution (permanent residency). She was kind, professional, reassuring and helped us quickly gather everything we needed to apply. This is at quite a contrast to other lawyers, and we saw several over the years. Nearly all of the other lawyers either gave us faulty or incomplete information or tried to scare us into doing extra work that was not necessary to make a good case. Sherilyn stuck completely to the facts and to the process and what to expect, and always gave straight answers to difficult questions.

Divorce can be really stressful process. I first met Kristin when she was an assistant for Albert Menashe, who I was referred to at the time. However, I soon found myself asking Kristin whenever I had a question. I felt that she really understood what I wanted and was able to support me fully throughout the whole process. She is very easy to communicate with and she is now a wonderful, passionate young lawyer. I would recommend her without any hesitation for anybody I know, which is a testament to what a great job she did with my case. Thank you, Kristin!

Jason was wonderful to work with in every way. I felt supported, incredibly well-represented, and understood with regard to the details of my case. I had previously spoken with no less than a dozen other personal injury attorneys and went with Jason. In short, Jason knows the law, he is passionate about representing injured parties, and he is incredibly personable. I would strongly recommend him to anyone in search of solid representation.

I consulted with Daniela for an elder financial abuse case. She was knowledgable, clear and helped inform me of my choices. Per our conversation, I realized that there were things I needed to do prior to engaging her, which is the reason that I didn't hire her. I appreciate the time she took to speak with me and look forward to working with her in the future.

Although we have never met Courtney Angeli in person, and just consulted her by phone, we can attest to her skills & integrity. Courtney laid out a roadmap and showed us available options that best fit our interests. She grasped the Big Picture, yet paid attention to the smallest details. She also grasped the complexity of the case, and expertly explained its subtleties and nuances in simple and non-legalese language. We highly recommend Courtney Angeli to anyone who has been treated unfairly by an employer.

Genuine and amazingly talented, he truly did the best he could to help me win in court. And we Did! Connor not only got me off of Federal Probation but he had the Judge lecturing the Prosecutor on ethics and verbally questioning their motives in front of the entire courtroom. He didn’t just do it to win he really believed in me and came up his own arguments and led me right out of court and 100% free. I owe him and Susan Moffatt and Allison”Tex” Clark a world of praise. They are rated the best Federal public defenders office in the country and the title is well deserved.

Alicia is compassionate, intelligent and knows the law. She helped me through a very emotional custody case. She was highly professional and we were able to come to an agreement on every detail peacefully (this was not the case previously). Because of her, I did not see the inside of a court room which not only saved everyone money but reduced the stress of the already stressful situation. Both sides and the child walked away satisfied with the final agreement. I highly recommend her. She was worth every penny as she saved us thousands in the long run!

John is first a friend and then a gentleman. Subtle, discreet, incisive, funny and ethical. He embodies, and exceeds, the best expectations of his former profession. His scholarship is impeccable but it is his heart for his cients that distinguishes him. He has been welll paid as a lawyer, banker and entrpeneur, though he has little interest in money, less in the monetary value of his services and none in his reputation. He salvaged my family and my business. He also is the best preacher I ever heard.

Tom is not only a awesome attorney, but he's also a really genuine, great person. For example, I was arrested for a matter not related to the case I had retained him for, and he came all the way out to the jail to talk to me, which was probably at least a 45 minute drive. His rate is very fair, and he really works hard to help ensure that you get the best possible outcome. Tom helps you understand what all your options are, and gives you sound advice as to what he believes your best bet is. However, he respects whichever decision you make and is supportive of it. He isn't impossible to get a hold of either, he has always gotten back to me in a timely manner. I definitely would recommend Tom to anyone in need of a criminal defense attorney.

Martitia or Marti as she prefers to be called is a very plain spoken, honest and very reasonably priced lawyer. Marti will not get into an area she is not familiar with and she won't waste your time on what ifs. Most of her specialties are estate planning, real estate and business law formations and agreements. She is very intelligent and compassionate to many of those in society that are not of priviledge or those who haven't exactly had a story book cookie cutter life style. Marti is patient nor is she jaded or arrogant like many in the law profession. She does however expect straight talk and will deliver it back in her small home town country upbringing delivery when pressed or pushed. Hiring Marti will not only bring you satisfactory results but you will feel good about getting associated with her.

My husband and I just completed our Trust through the Law Office of Katherine West. I wanted to share her contact info. with you because we were thrilled to find a competent, intelligent, patient, sincere, and completely knowledgeable attorney. We had planned to have a trust made right after our son was born (almost 4 years ago) but kept putting it off. Probably, because we knew it was exploring and answering some difficult questions. Well, push came to shove when we booked our first vacation away from the boys and literally asked ourselves, "if we crash, what happens to the boys". I know it's a morbid thought, but we certainly wanted to decide our children's fate. We found that so much more is involved in a trust. All that you could want answered, is and by completing it, we feel very secure. So, here is Katherine's information. Like I said, she was a complete pleasure to work with. She made it easy for us, was patient, and answered every question in a way that was clear and understandable. (contact information removed)

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
