I hired Lawrence for my criminal case out of Washington County. At first things were OK. But at the end he was really unprofessional, even rude. Told me that If I didn't take the deal offered to me I was going to go to prison. Which wasn't true. He didn't really care about my concerns. He was impossible to get a hold of. Normally lawyers call you a couple days before court just to remind you, he didn't call me until the morning of, which was about 1.5 hours before I had to be in court. Thankfully i was already on my way otherwise i would have been late. And after my case was finished I contacted him asking for clarification on something and it's been 2 months and still haven't heard anything back. And it involves my fines being paid, so petty important. I wouldn't recommend spending your hard earned money here. I ended up getting free legal advice from Ryan Scott #1 criminal defense attorney in Oregon. Who had a seminar recently on subjects very related to my case. But Lawrence didn't attend. When I told Lawrence what Ryan told me too, he didn't handle it well, that's when he was the most unprofessional.. He ended up having to call Ryan to discuss what he told me. Unfortunately by then it was too late. And I was stuck in the deal he recommended. The deal I had only 10 min to decide if I should take it or not.

If it was not for Lawrence believing in me and fighting for me like he did...I would be sitting in prison right now... I was facing 36 months in prison with no programs and no good time and because of Lawrence and his wonderful ways...he really saved my life and gave me an opportunity at having a second chance at life. If you have the pleasure of having him fight for you..embrace it..because he is an amazing lawyer!

I called his office three separate times in one month to make an appointment with him about my case. The office administrative person kept making excuses as to why she has not talked to her employer about my case or even passed just my name and phone number to him. Even if he called me now I would decline meeting with him because of the administrative person blocking me from him. Says a lot about his office staff and him.

The absolute most fraudulent lawyers in the civil rights focus. They perpetuate that they care but the pothead owner Greg Kafoury is very cold calloused and uncaring. My great grand uncle housed civil rights activists in his home as a prominent physician and best friend to MLK through his college years. These white people just care about profits they make off the racial issues we face here. When I needed them most they tuned me away those I had a previous case they worked with me on successfully. Stay far away!!!!

Why would an attorney who was removed from an HOA council due to the fact he lost a frivolous lawsuit, filed by Kevin Harker to a pro se litigant and was then fired by the HOA because he lost all confidence with the homeowners actually advertise that embarrassment on his own website? The bigger question is why would anyone hire this guy? The judge actually sanctioned him for his blatant dishonesty! So sad!

Mr. Harker was our HOA attorney and I was his pro se opposition. His case was dismissed in Superior Court of Washington (Clark County) District 7 under CR12 (b)(6), CR8 (a)(2) and judicial estoppel for inconsistent position. During the lawsuit Mr. Harker suffered from lack of ethical behavior and on March 26, 2021 I filed CR11 sanctions and was awarded fees to be paid by Mr. Harker not the client. I would recommend not to employ his services. Brian

We had a particularly hard case, and Kevin was definitely the right lawyer for us! We were up against an army of real estate and insurance lawyers. Kevin helped us navigate through the legal terminology and processes. He offered sound advice, but also listened to and validated our ideas. He also seems well connected to experts in his particular field of law. We were impressed with how much Kevin wanted to know about us, not just a clients, but as friends. We know that because of his hard work and perseverance we got the best settlement we could have gotten. We highly recommend him!

Mr. Evans represented me in a social security disability case. He was awesome from start to finish. His staff helped me file the application. He let me know what was going on every step of the way. He got all of my medical records and went through them with me to make sure nothing was missing. He prepared me for every aspect of the hearing. He went through sample questions so I would know what to expect and would be ready for the questions from Mr. Evans, the judge, and anyone else. Mr. Evans also met with my family members to determine who would be a good witness on my behalf and prepared her for the hearing as well. Once the judge ruled in my favor, Mr. Evans and his staff continued to contact social security as needed until I received all of my past due benefits. I can not express how thankful I am to Mr. Evans for all of the hard work and hand holding he put into my case and making sure nothing was missed and that I received the social security benefits I was owed.

I made a mistake and needed a attorney to clean it up, my neck was broken and my world was at the lowest point and I told him how to do what needed to be done on 2 cases, I turned down 50k before i hired him and the last 3 meetings he wanted me t o accept 2.5k, like two used car salesman working me over. time was of the essence was my main concern and it took him 8 months to just serve the person leading me on. 2 times i could of taken control of the one tort, and he talked me out and now i have nothing, almost 3 years he still had not filed or served disclosure. He quit 2 days before court and i had to play attorney, he showed up and in front of the judge he said he would mail me the rest of my records and I had to pay another 500 for another court appearance and I never received any of the records.. and I won only a small portion with out any disclosure. so now i am broke disabled the statuette of limitations on a bad injury claim that happened 7/5/09 i found no evidence he even contacted the Dr. or asked my witness and in late i called to try to get things moving on it and give them good news and they had done nothing and said i told them to close the case. you have been warned, it gets better, so I would really recommend his great abilities and fast service. and i finally found a malpractice attorney that is swamped but cannot help but take the easy case. I give him 5 stars. 8 months met with him 9/22/09 and it was 5/10 when defendant was served. Please forgive my poor grammar , stress brings out the best of me. and no good deed goes unpunished, I wanted to be an attorney when i was young even got accepted to Willamette, and just new i could not deal with the scum of the clients, and the lies. well, good luck if your looking for a attorney this one is the one I would of eaten in court if i would of finished schooling I paid every bill i got. and lived in a old dairy barn, bed ridden for the first 9 months until surgery , then had a chance to get my property back and they told me no no no , so I look forward to seeing him again , on the other side with a real attorney taking my, side..... but this is just my opinion, and dates may not be exact . I told him the last attorney lost his ore bar for a lot less . I am at the lowest part of my life. thanks pete i cannot even afford to go to a doctor. pay for heat. or even cook for myself for the last 3 years.1995 i hired a attorney for the exact type of case. 2 days and everything was done and i had my home back.told them how she did it and in 1995 the attorney told me how and I told his team......8 months later. I was ruined by that time....

Never having had the need for a WC attorney before, I wasn't sure where to go when my minor child was injured at her job and suffered a Brain Injury. We met with Mr. Dodge, and retained him. He was personable, understanding, knowledgeable and compassionate. All qualities that are important to a parent when someone is dealing with their child. Mr. Dodge took the time to meet with us, discuss the situation, identify potential courses of action to take, and worked with us every step of the way. He explained everything and answered all of our questions. He always had the best interests of my daughter in the forefront of the case. Not only did he provide guidance and assistance to us while we muddled through the situation, he identified that her employer was a "non-compliant employer" not only protecting my child, but current and future employees of the company she worked for. The things we learned through our experience with Mr. Dodge - He will go to bat for you. He will be honest with you - you may not always like what he has to tell you, but it is what you have to know, and hear - it is the truth. If he feels that he can't win your case, he will tell you. If he feels he can, he will tell you that too. You can always count on him telling it like it is. I highly recommend Mr. Dodge, and have actually referred 3 other people to him as well as my daughter on another issue. If you need a WC attorney, he is your man.

Avoid this lawyer and his law firm AT ALL COSTS. We hired Ben Evans to help my mother through her divorce from her abusive ex-husband, and let me tell you: working with him was one of the most infuriating and aggravating experiences of our lives. Not only was this illiterate, degenerate lawyer unresponsive with laser-consistency, but he was always wildly impatient and rude to my mother. He never did any of the paperwork that he said he was going to do; my mother ended up doing most of it herself. He tried to convince my mother to give up most of the very reasonable things she was asking for from the divorce judge. It almost seemed like Ben Evans was colluding with my mother's ex-husband. Ben Evans never once showed even so much as an iota of care for his client. Ben always behaved as if we were a massive drain on his life and as if we should worship every breath he exhaled. He acted like a pretentious, defiant pre-teen. My mother's English isn't the best, and we're a very poor family, so we dug deep into what little money he had left to hire this clown. He caused my mother so much additional stress to the point that we ended up paying Ben Evans the full amount just so we could fire him on the spot and rid ourselves of the malignant tumor he had become in our lives. If you are a woman, or an immigrant, or struggling financially, and seeking help from a lawyer: do NOT hire this arrogant insect of a man. He will only cause you to lose tens of thousands of dollars with ZERO results.

After 13 years of directly paying my exwife child support for our 2 children, per a verbal agreement, she decided to take me to court for more money. After trying to talk to her and settle situation out of court, as we have for last 13 years, I realized she wasnt going to compromise anymore and simply wanted everything she could get. I knew then that i needed a lawyer. I was given Ben Evans name as a referral from my roommates EAP. This being my first experience with a lawyer, I had no expectations. After initially speaking with Ben on the phone, I felt comfortable about moving forward with him representing me. I brought in everything regarding my divorce and explained what had changed since the final verdict years ago. He was quick to decipher everything I had and the situation I was in. By my next visit, he had every bit of paperwork ready to fill out and a rough time frame of what to expect. Every question I had was answered. Every bit of the paperwork I didn't understand or needed quidance on, Ben was there with an answer that related to what I was looking for as my final result. During the whole process, there were a couple hiccups with a difficult judge, Ben was adamant about rectifying the situation and wasted no time contacting the judge so we could move further on closing my case. All the while, keeping me up to date on everything transpiring. There were a couple things that I had to take care of on my own, which he informed me of where and how to handle. Including raising the eyebrows of child support division to the alterations in my case, making it easier for me to do what I needed to do. In the end, my support was lowered, to the surprise of my ex! Ben was easy to work with and communication was spot on. Any problems throughout my case, were handled quickly and on track for ultimate goal. Every aspect of my case was addressed and tended to. Regardless of my unexpected, pleasant outcome, I pray I don't have to go through this again but will definitely be calling Ben if the situation presents itself. I would recommend him to any person in need of a thorough family lawyer.

I am the custodial parent and was being challenged on my behavior with my 12 year old. Child protective services were called to investigate an accusation of withholding food. The case was deemed unfounded. My child’s mother apparently desired a second opinion. This is when I called the firm Austin Batalden worked at. Batalden was happy to meet with me and my wife for the consultation fee. While speaking with her, she exuded a confidence to handle our legal situation. Based on her appraisal, Batalden estimated the cost would end up being a few thousand dollars if things went smoothly, and perhaps ten thousand dollars or more if they did not. Once Batalden began working on my case, I began to lose confidence in her. I tried to encourage Batalden to be more assertive with the facts already available, and I kept getting the sense that she did not want to be too strong with the opposing counsel. The opposing counsel was being quite strong however, and when I had spent about four thousand dollars, I decided to seek out a different attorney. I hired a new attorney. Batalden’s firm, aware of my disappointment, transferred my case for the associated clerical fees. I was quite relieved once I began to work with my new attorney. What I learned is that attorneys can often sound intelligent, and indeed are intelligent in terms of law, but that does not inform clients as to their competence other areas related to their job. My opinion is that Batalden was disinterested in my case and my perception was that my case got away from her before she realized it. I also perceived and felt that she was not interested in me and my well-being as a person experiencing a difficult situation evolving into a crisis. My mental health and that of my wife and whole family suffered through the next two years to have our matter eventually go before a judge. I believe this could have been avoided. I remain my child’s custodial parent and my child’s mother was ordered supervised visitation and mandatory professional coaching. I would not recommend Batalden for any matter that had more nuance than simply navigating the legal system. The total cost of my court ordeal was around 50 thousand dollars. I believe this too could have been avoided.

Mr Durham was completely uninterested in fighting for me in my criminal case. Almost hostile in his disinterest to the point that I became kind of intimidated to call. He was never available via phone and only returned one of many phone calls. He did not want to meet in person to discuss my case or develop a strategy on a felony case. He told me we could just discuss the details of the case over the phone and that coming in wasn’t necessary. Always was impatient sounding on the phone. He had no strategy to win the case and though he considered it ‘weak’, never once made me feel confident that I had a chance. Told me that I could look forward to two years of a drawn out case—or just get probation. Appalling experience. Beware.

I met Mr Bittner last year to discuss my confusing and emotionally charged divorce case that only few attorneys would consider taking. After our initial consultation, he expressed willingness to move forward in spite of the mess I was in. I decided to hire Tom because he handled me like a bowling pin and I needed a good negotiator (I wasn’t interested in trying to burn my X but protect my family). My case took almost a full year to resolve, and through that time I had the freedom to proactively work together with him; he was always there as a voice of reality to temper ideals and help me refocus. Tom won’t tell you what you want to hear. He knows the system and will help you to see where justice is blind to your case. If you’re a vindictive person he’s not a good match, but if you need a strong advocate who really wants to help people work things out, I highly recommend his services.

Hired for the initial divorce. She likes talking at slow pace and killing time and creating excessive documentation and evaluation adding billing hours. Costed 90k with initial divorce- the case was straight forward with property, custody and parenting- no complications. Relies on clients to provide analysis rather than being creative and strategic. Had multiple issues post divorce and I had no choice but to continue to retain as she knew the case history but attorney clearly missed the key details in trials, misguided with incorrect judgment language interpretation and lacked proactive and firm standing against opposing attorneys. I guess after making big fat check it was a matter of how to get pocket change! Good at being empathetic but not thorough when it comes to attention to detail and presentation in court. Unable to process judgment language and provided contradictory advise, after being directed by opposing attorney she changed her initial advice. Likes to followup with opposing attorneys on trivial issues(unnecessary) but consistently missed the real issues and left them unaddressed. When these concerns were brought on table and around invoicing hours she said her job is to ensure that invoices match billing and clearly the intent is to accumulate hours to charge. During recent trial, Failed to discuss and consent with client on any strategy until the weekend the night before ( trial on monday) and then over the weekend created different documentation (for same issue) for submission to court and opposing attorney-when asked why 2 different sets were created, there was no reasoning then only 1 set of documents were not submitted to court. All her bills$90k have been paid on time but when questioned on the most recent act of unnecessary hours and lack of how loosely the case was handled she opted to withdraw and threatened to get collections involved. Further when asked about open issues and followup (since my ex is not abiding by the court order) she ignored and shoved them on the side and those still remain open on my file. Overall the firm is a big name but needs more matured and smart to the point attorneys who are more transparent and keep client interest first over increasing the quantity of hours. Overall good at being counselor but provides weak arguments, excessive documentation, missing key details, lack of timely and to the point communication.

Jim Cartwright operated with integrity in a very difficult case in our family. His expertise in elder law and in trial work was clear. He maintained a laser focus on the legal issues and was patient but firm in his insistence that all parties cooperate to maintain that focus. His professionalism helped calm emotions, including those of other attorneys involved. His logical strategy helped him prevail in Court. We are grateful for his help and his manner and highly recommend him and his firm.

Jim Cartwright appears to have an excellent understanding of the laws governing testamentary trusts. Unfortunately, he runs a small law firm which he, apparently, has no interest in overseeing. The result is that he assigns clients to lawyers who appear less than competent to handle the clients' business. In my case, the lawyer he assigned to my legal matter ignored multiple instructions given by me over the better part of a year to approach the other side about settling the case. This lawyer went so far as to set a trial date WITHOUT INFORMING ME that a trial had even been scheduled. It was only by luck that, weeks later, I discovered that a trial was upcoming, went to Jim Cartwright, and had this lawyer taken off the case. Months later, and despite the fact that Jim billed me something like $750.00 to take this lawyer off the case, I discovered that he HAD PUT THE LAWYER BACK ON THE CASE without informing me. Subsequently, Jim abruptly dropped me as a client with no explanation. I believe that he did so upon discovering that the lawyer had committed a malpractice after being put back on my case, and did not want to deal with the conflict of interest this malpractice created. Whatever the reasons for Jim's allowing my case to be handled in this way, his actions did not inspire confidence in his honesty, his responsiveness, or his desire to keep me informed. Plenty of lawyers in the Portland, Oregon area are skilled at handling of trusts. I am not familiar with most of them, but I would seek out any one of them before entrusting my business to James Cartwright again. Bill Merritt

Doug was skilled in the legal formalities, if you will. His timid court presence was Frustrating and quite ineffective during trial. I had two suits he represented me in... after the 2nd trial he disappeared. Doesn't answer his phone, or return emails. He represented a friend of mine and ghosted him as well. Frustrating to say the least because his services are still required to get my settlement finalized. I hope he hasn't passed away from covid...

WAS GREAT AT MAKING ME FEEL COMFORTABLE. HE DID NOT ASK ANY QUESTIONS OR BRING UP THINGS HE PROMISED HE WOULD TRIAL HE WAS NOT AT ALL AGRESSIVE AND THE DA WAS UNCHALLENGED BY HIM IN HER EXCHAGERATED TRUTHS AND FALSE ASSUMPTIONS. FAILED TO CHALLENGE AND OR BRING UP EVIDENCE AS DISCUSSED AND FAILED TO SHOW ME IMPORTANT DISCOVERY THAT WAS IMPERITIVE TO TRIAL.

If you've been denied a Public Defender or you are just looking for a decent attorney then I recommend Scott. He took the time to understand my situation and offer advice without charging me an arm and a leg. My previous experience with getting legal help was from a big law firm that ended-up charging me for every little thing. They didn't care about me and couldn't be bothered to explain anything without charging me extra. So it was shocking to me to find an attorney that didn't try to nickel and dime me for every little thing. He is the most laid-back attorney I've ever met, has a good sense of humor, and doesn't make you feel judged. Can't hurt to give him a call. Good luck!

She told me one thing, then told others a different story. Took too long to return calls and seemed to lose interest in the case. This case ended in a hugely traumatizng event for a really big family and several young children due to her incomptence.

Craig sorted out what was a difficult mixed-property dissolution and obtained a favorable result in a settlement. Craig was my first and only attorney in this dissolution. Craig was consistent during the transitions. He explained the law to me and at critical times during settlement provided good, sound, conservative advise. I was confident after being educated by Craig that I could stand firm on certain issues, while giving on others.

We hired this attorney for my son's divorce and found him to be passive and quiet. He let everyone walk over him in court and didn't represent my son's best interests. We felt he was siding with my son's wife and he didn't get us a court date after asking him frequently for one. We feel he was just stringing us along to bring in money for the firm. As we hadn't dealt with a divorce in our family before, we didn't realize how bad things were until my son was about 30 thousand dollars in debt and he still didn't get a divorce after over 2 years. My son fired him and hired another attorney. The divorce wasn't a difficult one so there wasn't any reason why it wasn't finalized much sooner. We don't recommend this attorney for anyone.

We used Anna's firm for years, sadly we inherited Anna. Do to her inability to respond in an even remotely timely manner, we retained another firm some time ago. Unfortunately, Anna McCormack's inability to do her job is currently costing us money due to The City of Portland's new rent control ordinance. Had she not dropped the ball, all of our rents would have been raised in time for us to not be affected by the current 'law.' Fortunately for Anna, I am too busy with my own business to do anything more than write this review and warn other people within my community. However, if this review mysteriously disappears, I will absolutely file suit against Warren Allen, LLP for malpractice in addition to a very well deserved letter to the bar.

A very experienced real estate and landlord's attorney. Anna knew much, much more about Landlord Tenant law than my tenant's attorney did. Her knowledge and professionalism saved me time and money. If you ever find yourself with an unreasonable tenant, call Anna. She will save the day. She's level headed and an experienced litigator. She was so great in my case that I am now hiring her for contracts and other legal matters regarding land and real estate.

I have used several attorneys over the years and this is the first time I have actively gone out of my way to review one. I feel I need to try to warn others that Shannon isn't very good. We did not communicate well, the level of research needed was excessive for a 20 year attorney, billing was terribly slow, and together these items lead to average work at a very high price. I felt as though I was her first will client. Do yourself a favor and keep looking. Even after confronting her I felt she was uncaring. I am not the type of person to write a complaint but I hope by doing so I can help someone from overpaying for legal services.

Personally I think he hates what he does and he only practices law in order to fund his night life. Don't expect him to get up before noon. He engaged in petty quarrel with opposing counsel, scared me into agreeing to bankruptcy, and forced me to settle out of court with much less support and protection than my children needed. Later had to have another lawyer repair the damage, but there is never enough repair to give my children back that year and 4 months of homelessness and fear!

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.

Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:

Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
