Carly Surber (now Maganuco) helped me at the law firm of Philip Lindsley and San Diego Elder Law. She was both completely professional and down-to-earth, highly accurate and warmly responsive, prompt in replying to emails and calls, and generally a comfort following my husband's death. She has excellent interpersonal skills and is one of those rare pros who makes you feel like you are her only client, even though you know better. Can't say enough!

Ryan Hanley was amazing. He communicates legal terms clearly and your rights as a client. He goes above and beyond with advising you on the pros and cons of your case. He has your back in and out of the court room. Highly recommend Ryan Handley and his legal team at LASSD. Thank you Ryan for preserving my rights and representing me in my landlord/tenant eviction case during COVID.

I was simply going to copy and paste the review I wrote for Eric on LinkedIn, but the representation Eric provided for me is deserving of more than that. I found myself bogged down in the mire of a legal battle over a lease agreement with a less than reputable property manager in the San Diego area. Due to Eric's perseverance and seemingly un-ending professionalism we emerged victorious against our legal foe, righting what had once been wrong, and further establishing what makes this country the best in the world, JUSTICE (and the bald eagle). On a slightly more serious note, Eric is a man you can trust. Eric can empathize in any scenario someone might find themselves in, and not only is he the kind of guy you want to take out for a beer, but you would feel completely comfortable entrusting your legal counsel to his intellect, motivation and desire to succeed. Thanks for everything man, you are the only counsel I will ever consider necessary. -Curtis

Workers compensation is a black hole that sucks money from workers and companies while providing no medical service. Denial is now at 100% because the law is on their side. Mr. Harris explained the system and what we need to do in order to bring about the needed changes to the horribly flawed system.

Prior to meeting Christi, I had a rather dismal view of attorneys in general. All my experiences had taught me they were not to be trusted, that they only cared about themselves and were unscrupulous barracudas looking to profit from conflict escalation rather than resolution. Christi Hill changed my opinion of lawyers - she was incredibly professional, patient and so helpful. I let her know upfront that my financial situation was not great and she actually listened. She did not treat me like her least important client. Rather, I got the impression she made my case a priority. I'm convinced that all of her clients get the same treatment. I had let several tickets lapse and had some failure-to-appears on my record which resulted in a bench warrant as well as a suspended license. Events in my life caused a bad situation to snowball into a large problem. She did not judge me or make me feel like a loser, though I came to her with my tail between my legs. She quickly got on the case and before I knew it had a plan of attack that involved her showing up to court on my behalf to deal with the bench warrant. She got my fines out of collections and arranged for me to have 6 months to pay a much smaller amount than I ever thought possible! She then set-up court dates and advised me on what to say and do in order to save me money. Her fee was very reasonable considering how much work she had to do on my behalf. She even let me pay her in a few installments after retaining her services. She is also the kindest person (let alone attorney) I've met in a long time! I wholly recommend Christi Hill as a hard-working, dedicated lawyer with integrity. Thank you, Christi!

Mr. Dingwall was very attentive in handling my case with the labor department and kept me well informed. In my opinion Mr. Dingwall was very engaged in the case using good communication skills, professionalism and honesty. Mr. Dingwall was also good at explaining the law and how it works. I would give him a strong recommendation to anyone in my situation.

I was in a motorcycle accident over a year ago and met Carlie Bouslaugh at Gomez trial attorneys. She was very patient with me as I received treatment for my injury and always checked up on me to give me updates. She helped explain the entire process and made sure I understood everything. I was lucky to have Carlie representing me. Carlie is very knowledgeable about the law and very intelligent. She also really cares about her clients. A year later, I have a received a large settlement all thanks to Carlie Bouslaugh. If you want a great lawyer that cares about her client, Carlie is the one.

I am very thankful to have found Rose Kasusky (Thompson) She appeared when I thought everything was lost and had no more hope. I made a mistake a few years ago and hired a lawyer to help me with my case. The judge said it was a simple case that All I needed to do is have my lawyer turn in all my paper work on time and it would all be solved. Little did I know I trusted the wrong lawyer and instead of helping me I ended up with a deportation order and felt betrayed I never thought a lawyer would do something like that. So I had a deportation order and I let a few years pass I didn't want to look for another lawyer I didn't know if I could trust anyone and was scared. In the end I knew I needed a new lawyer and started looking for one and I called many and they would all say that my situation was very hard and that it was almost impossible to open my case again since it was closed and I had that order. I was so sad and depressed I didn't know who else to turn to and then I saw another lawyer named Lillia Velasquez on T.V and I went to her office and she told me she would take my case but she was very busy and that my case needed attention As soon as possible. Then she told me that she knew a person who could help me Rose Kasusky she was a few doors down from Mrs. Velazquez. I went down to her and she greeted my husband my mother and Me with a smile and made us comfortable. Then she asked about my situation looked into it and also told me that it was a very difficult situation but that she would help me. THANK GOD!! She did in less then a week what the other lawyer could not do in 2 years she gathered up all the paper work and sent her assistant with me to immigration the day I had to turn my self in. The reason she sent her assistant was that she was already working on a case and had to help that person in court I believe but she left me with such hope that I was not afraid to go and talk to them with all the paper work she gave me. I went and told one of. The supervisors about my situation and how I was not helped the first time she asked me for my previous lawyers name and let me go. They opened my case up again and Rose did such an amazing job I still can not believe all she did for me. My case was done in 2013 with a great over turn and I can not express my gratefulness to Rose she sure went way beyond her way as a lawyer and made what most lawyers said was impossible possible. Thank you so much!!

I was originally referred to Mr. Bejar in 2010. I had a consultation with Mr. Bejar and I was very impressed and made me feel confident in my case. At this time, I had been to a consultation with another immigration attorney. Because I was in a difficult financial situation at the time, I decided to go with the other attorney to represent me in my immigration case. I 100% regret the decision I made to not have Mr. Bejar represent me. My attorney made a mistake with my case and brought so much stress to my life with more expenses. I obviously did not trust my attorney any more so I decided to visit The Law Office of Jan Joseph Bejar and hoped they could help me fix the mistake made by another attorney. My consultation was with Nicole Leon. Ms. Leon was very upfront and did not make me false promises. She was very nice and honest. She kept me in the loop throughout the whole process which I greatly appreciated! Nicole was able to successfully fix the mistake my other attorney made and I am now a US Citizen thanks to her. Moral of the story: you get what you pay for. Saving a few bucks is not worth a mistake that can affect you for the rest of your life. I am so grateful for this law office. I will continue to recommend this law office to everyone I know. Thank you Ms. Leon and Mr. Bejar!

Mr. Pederson helped my father set up a Revocable Living Trust more than 27 years ago. Upon my father's death, I became the Trustee. Because I live more than 1000 miles away, I relied on Mr. Pederson to represent me and my father's trust in the San Diego area. I did meet with him in person several times when I returned to the area to visit, but the majority of the contacts were made by telephone or e-mail. He promptly got back to me whenever I had questions or concerns. I found Mr. Pederson to be a very thorough and competent professional while also being a very caring and patient person. He led me through a lot of dealings with challenging situations and people. We had to deal with managing the property under a life estate situation with a reverse mortgage and finally the sale of the property and disbursement of the assets. His guidance and wise counsel helped make the seemingly overwhelming position of Trustee much more manageable. I would highly recommend Mr. Pederson as I was extremely pleased with the services he provided for me and my family.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
