I used Mr. Dennison for two separate matters, one employment/trade secret issue and a patent issue. He was very knowledgeable about both areas of law and can explain difficult topics in easy to understand bites.

Deciding to go through a divorce can be one of the most difficult decisions in your life. Choosing this law firm should be the easiest. The team that was behind me made me feel safe, protected, looked after and confident that I could get through this. They communicated every step of the way and were always available to answer my many, many questions. I can honestly say that without this team I could not have gotten through the past 2 1/2 years of my life. Thank you Julie Westerman and team for all you have done for me!

I knew from the first day of consultation that Anna and Gretchen were who I needed to assist in my divorce. They were attentive and very skilled in helping me understand the legal process when I was so totally stressed. At all times I felt and ultimately received a feeling that I was the most important person and my needs were first and paramount. I highly recommend Anna and Gretchen to assist in your needs as well.

Anna was the first lawyer in a series of 4 lawyers it took to get my divorce. 2 years later, and a whole lot of research and knowledge into my divorce process, I now know that she was incredible. She worked relentlessly to get my paperwork in order, to turn everything in in an organized and efficient fashion. She never over charged, her hours were reasonable, and she was always available for consultation. Even after I changed lawyers (I moved from SD to LA, and had a difficult divorce) she was available for consultation and advice, she transferred my paperwork to the new lawyer quickly and was always pleasant. I wish I was able to stick with her throughout my divorce process, I have no doubt it would have gotten through quicker.

Lisa was so kind and caring to what my kids and I were going through with my divorce. She was always professional, realistic and wanting only justice for me as her client. Even years after the divorce was final, she continued to help and advise me with non-compliance issues with my ex. I went through a very long probate process due to a lot of complications dealing with assets and family conflicts. We wound up having to hire separate lawyers. I decided to hire RMO law firm and Stephanie K. Delaney was my Lawyer. She worked very hard and was a big help getting me through a lot of the problems dealing with assets and family issues. She remained calm helping me get through this long drawn out process. She was easy to get a hold of and was always available when things got out of control. Toward the end, there were a lot of documents to sign that were hard to understand but Stephanie helped me when I had questions. When closing probate there was a couple delays but Stephanie was able to straighten things out with the lawyer for the other family member and we were finally able to close probate. I thank Stephanie for all her help. She was pleasant to work with and I’m so happy to have her as my lawyer. I want to thank Scott Rahn (RMO) as well for agreeing to take my case and work with lawyers from another firm that the other family member had hired. Scott Rahn would step in on occasion when his expertise was needed .

The employee Aaron i spoke with hung up on me when asking how we’d go about sending receipts and placed me on hold about 20 times in our hour long bs conversation. Koryn Sheppard is a tough-nosed, no-nonsense attorney who does not mince her words, keeps the opposing counsel honest, and diligently and compassionately asserts her client's rights without any doubts. As far as issues in dispute, she will cut to the chase and save the client time and money. In the same respect, when an olive branch is extended to her to discuss matters reasonably, she knows how to take the gloves off to extend a handshake when things just need to be simple and reasonable. I would recommend her without a second thought.

If you want to constantly not know anything about your case or be the one to constantly call and not get calls back .. I’ve dealt with a 4 year case and let’s just say … they fight or pain and suffering but get your pain and suffering money … I followed and did everything I was told to do by Andy to help be treated … but in the end he still got over 20,000 dollars more than myself who was injured and have to suffer and deal with the pain for the rest of my life 🙃 no money could ever pay for the amount of pain to suffer the rest of your life , but your case is just a money bag for this specific office . Your pain , your suffering or your life time suffering doesn’t matter. I should have listened to the other comments about being a disappearing attorney. Just glad this is all over and god for bid I ever need another attorney , I won’t be coming back here . I wish I could say thanks , but the only person in this office I feel is deserving of something would be Yazmin. I wish I would have continued with firing this office when I had the new office and not trusted they would “ do right “ if I kept them. Lesson learned and extra suffering with the headache of this office is over with !

I recently was charged with a crime, a felony, but because of prop 47, it became a misdemeanor, HOWEVER, perhaps not for me. To make matters worse, I picked up a SECOND case shortly after. I unfortunately have quite an extensive past, involving 2 state prison terms. Because of that, these misdemeanors could have very well been brought up to a felony, because of my past and I may have been facing another long prison term. I did not have much time to act, however I did not have the means for an attorney, and accepted the fact I would be getting a public defender. Without going into personal detail, I had A LOT more to lose than just my freedom, a mentally challenged brother who lives with me, as I take care of him. He ONLY has me. I had A LOT to lose. ONE DAY before my initial court date, I had the means to hire a private attorney. One day. I googled, "TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEYS IN SAN DIEGO", and MR. STEPHEN CLINE'S name came up, top on the page. I called his office. My call was answered by TRISHA PHILLIPS, Mr. Cline's office manager and assistant. Trisha listened patiently to my panicked story, was extremely professional and sympathetic towards me. I hired Mr. Cline OVER the phone with Trisha, and drove to his office to settle arrangements with her. In one hour, I had an attorney, without ever meeting Mr. Cline at that point, I somehow KNEW, I was in THE BEST of hands. Mr. Cline appeared in court for me the following morning. I received a call from Trisha afterwards relaying the outcome of the day. Because of the severity, not the charge thus far, but the severity of my PAST, Mr. Cline was completely up front with me of the possibilities I faced and his course of action he planned to take so I would receive the best possible outcome. Anyone going through a court case knows, your attorney can never guarantee you anything, but what he can tell you, is what he plans to do for you. This is the moment, you will KNOW, if you hired a great attorney, if he or she is planning to FIGHT for you. Mr. Cline did this for me. I KNEW, I could not have hired ANYONE better. I knew he was going to fight for me. He had legal aids work closely with me, gathering details that Mr. Cline requested, and he continued going to court, on my behalf, all through the court proceedings, and then I would be informed of each outcome. Finally, sentencing day and it was over. TWO cases, an extensive background, TWO prison prior terms......and I NEVER stepped into the courtroom ONCE, Mr. Cline did. I did NOT get a state prison term, nor even a county jail sentence. I am doing 3 months house arrest, 5 days public work service and of course, fines, which is out of any attorneys control. Believe me, going through court proceedings is terrifying, especially when you're facing prison. I have done it twice, and the court proceedings are almost worst than the time, almost. As frightened as I was about my possibilities of prison again, I never felt the intense pressures and stress of going to court. I never stepped a foot inside, I didn't have to, I hired, THE TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY IN SAN DIEGO !! This is a FACT ! I am not proud of my past, but I am not too ashamed of it either, I paid my dues and my debt to society and I've been told and I know, I paid a little too harshly for my offenses in the past. Thankfully, because of Mr. Cline, I did not have to pay once more, with my freedom. This ATTORNEY.....he is THE ONE to have on your side !!! I was almost sorry when it was over because I wouldn't be seeing him again.......NOT IN HIS OFFICE !! Not me ! I was would like to add, my case was finalized 3 months ago. I have had attorneys in the past...once the case is over, his office is done with you. Not at Mr. Cline's. I have called many times with questions since, regarding my court orders, and ALWAYS, Trisha is there to guide and advise me. I cannot say enough and I cannot THANK YOU enough Mr. Cline, Trisha and your entire team !!

I have to comment on how pleased I am with the extreme professionalism Jessica and her paralegal Gina exhibit. Together, they really care about help their clients get through once of the most trying times in a persons life. Jessica is amazing in court as she maintains a very calm, cool yet assertive nature about herself. Jessica is extremely knowledgeable and is very articulate when representing a person in court. Dealing with an ex that has a punishing personality, Jessica and Gina have been able to provide solutions that help move the case closer to resolution. Trying to imagine what it would have been like handling this case to save money would have been foolish. Divorce is not easy nor pleasant. I highly recommend Jessica Medina and her paralegal Gina. They truly care and have the best interest of their client at heart.

I attempted to handle my own divorce but my ex-spouse retained an attorney known for bully tactics and proceeded to dismantle me. I met with Beatrice, Jessica, and Mareva and they immediately devised a plan and executed well. Jessica was kind and caring while dealing with me and polite, yet firm, with the opposing attorney when he would try to bully her as well. I was probably not an easy client, as I’m extremely disorganized and a chronic procrastinator, but with Jessica and Marevas help we were able to establish order from chaos. I highly recommend Beatrice and Jessica should you ever have the unfortunate task of resolving a family law matter.

I read the 1 review posted re: "affluent people". My parents, and myself have John Preston for our "living trusts". We are, simple country folk. "Mid America" if you will. Have some assets, but certainly not enough to do anything but keep ourselves fed and comfy in retirement years. I felt I had to post this, after reading the only other review. My Mother passed all of the sudden a year ago. I cannot tell you the EASE and comfort of having everything already lined up. They took her from ICU, to the funeral home. All my father and I had to do was pick up death certificates. They even took Mama to the Vet's cemetery. (thru the vet's program.) The mental stress of having to do all that was gone. All we had to do was grieve. No matter your age, DO this for your family. It's hard enough w/out dragging thru probate court for years, and family bickering. It's said and DONE.

Preston Estate Planning targets the more affluent elderly by placing full page ads in newspapers promising a free lunch and a free Kindle if seniors come to a meeting and bring their trust with them for review. John Preston told me that it didn't matter if their website was 10 years out of date because their audience did not much use computers or the web. At the luncheon, almost invariably the trusts are found to be significantly defective and in need of reworking. Their motto is "We Fix Trusts". Seniors are then offered a $100 gift card after they attend a free meeting with Mr. Preston or another lawyer for a more detailed review at a local rented office room. At the meeting I attended, my wife and I were told, after a cursory examination of our documents (prepared by a very highly regarded established local law firm) that they were among the worst he had ever seen and would not work as planned. Mr. Preston also told us that that there was not enough time to tell us all the problems with our trust and that it was too complicated for us to understand. However, if we agreed to have Preston Estate Planning do all the work that was necessary to "fix" the trusts, they would reduce the $7500 cost by $2000 - but only if we signed up at that exact moment - no waiting to think it over or get a second opinion or talk to family about it. I was not allowed to take any notes about the cost, and my request for Mr. Preston to return the required detailed questionnaire with its confidential, private, medical and financial information was not met, even after making the request in writing.

Attorney Michael R. Juarez is a first-rate lawyer that will always represent you with your best interest in mind, fight for you when the scenario appears less than favorable and maintain the upmost respectable attorney/client relationship. I was represented by Attorney Juarez, through a divorce case, where opposing counsel for the respondent acted in a manner that was borderline unethical with obscene demands and often stating out-right lies. Attorney Juarez maintained a consistent professional demeanor and navigated the entire process, even, through a pandemic, in a masterly way. Mr. Carroll's exceptional professionalism, knowledge of the law and dedication to my case was simply outstanding. I have never needed a lawyer before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say that the service I received was exemplary. He continually provided sound legal advice and spent countless hours working on my case. He kept me updated regularly and was extremely diligent in accomplishing our legal goals. I read the one-star reviews on this website and I can tell you from my experience, those comments sound nothing like Mr. Carroll. His demeanor and very impressive knowledge of the law made him very easy to deal with and he did not force me to make any types of decisions. He simply gave me the facts regarding my legal standing, advised me on my options and allowed me to make my own decisions going forward. It almost seemed like he had a hidden agenda. Perhaps a deal with the DA. I had a federal case and he had me go to court without seeing a judge only DA, arresting officer, and another officer. Carroll yelled at me at the top of his lungs trying to get me to incriminate myself. He only visit me twice and both times he smell like whiskey and kept going on talking about heroin. I hired Rebecca for help with a transfer of property between family members. My laser focus was on Prop 13. I paid her invoices in full within a day or two of receiving them. Yet after the document signing and receiving her invoice on the same day, I heard not one more word from her. Prior to the closing she sent me a letter outlining the final steps that were needed. One specifically said that she would send me a FedEx so I could send back one of the docs signed. I never received the mailer. The mailer was for the KEY and ESSENTIAL document needed by the county to lock in the Prop 13 transfer. Knowing she was moving, I waited a week plus after the signing to follow up with her. I sent her THREE emails asking if she had filed an emailed pdf I sent her with the county. I sent her a copy of HER LETTER saying she would take this action. I asked her if she received my prior emails. She NEVER RESPONDED. What bothered me the most about being ignored was that the issue I was asking about was the fundamental and elemental issue in contacting her in the first place. I brought up the importance of the Prop 13 transfer in virtually every single conversation I had with her. This was not some extraneous and irrelevant topic. I contacted the county and they told me they hadn't received anything so I then started working with them. The county reps were fantastic, responding with clear guidance, within hours of my emails to them. The county could not have been easier to work with. Finally, after waiting nearly four months for the county to process the transaction, I received confirmation that the transfer was done right. Until last week, I lived on pins and needles wondering if the transaction was processed correctly. Rebecca could have eased my concerns if she had simply responded to my emails. Friends ask if I have any idea why she ghosted me and I don't. I was clear in what needed to be done. I was quick in responding to her questions. I paid her full bill without question nearly immediately after receiving it. I don't know what more an attorney could ask for in a client. Her work was accurate as borne out by the confirmed property tax bill. There were a couple of times during the process where she dropped out of sight but popped back up when it was apparent action was necessary. For instance, a Friday afternoon email from me after finding out the closing was the following Tuesday. She jumped into action and got the necessary paperwork done by the end of the day. But was that really necessary? Should she have done the work previously and sent something for me to have reviewed? I kinda think so but I let it slide. But when she ghosted me, it seems to fit a pattern. I debated long and hard whether or not to post this. She did do accurate work (only confirmed after four long months), she was friendly, but I just cannot overlook the fact that she dropped me like a hot potato once she'd been paid. Maybe I was just chump change to her. After all I only paid her nearly $3000. Which isn't really chump change to me.

Rebecca reviewed a commercial lease for me. She was very thorough and pointed out various areas of concern and proposed ways to negotiate the lease in my favor. She was friendly and didn't make me feel dumb for all the questions I asked.

I sent her retainer after we had carefully discussed my case and fully expected to move forward. From there, however, she began repeatedly changing her information, and contradicting herself repeatedly. At one point she didn’t contact me or do any work on my case for THREE WEEKS. Then she began telling me things that are simply not true. I’ve spoken with other lawyers who made things very clear and simple (As much as possible anyway) and confirmed which things she told me were true and which were not. I don’t know if she is incompetent or was simply not willing to work with a case that didn’t make her a lot of money, but the only good thing I can say about this experience is that she sent my retainer back in full. I am a disabled single mom of two disabled kids and she took my money and wasted my time and energy. Inconsiderate and unacceptable.

It's rare to work with an attorney who has deep expertise and is still accessible. Sasha is one of the great ones. She thoughtfully answered my questions and made sure I had the information I needed to make decisions. I never felt rushed and I knew she had my best interested in mind at every step of the process.

She never followed up with us. We always had to contact her. We would leave messages with her assistant and no phone calls back. It would have been nice if she have tried to communicate with us more.

Mr. Mike Ditter restored our faith in the legal system. We were referred to him through a close relative. He is especially good at explaining complicated probate issues. He is also a great "communicator". All our phone calls and emails were promptly returned. Will be grateful to Mr. Ditter forever. Definetely will recommend him to a relative or best friend. He deserves 100 stars!.

Ditter is handling what should be a very simple dispersal of an estate. He has stretched the process out over a period of 18 months, has made careless errors, and seldom, if ever, returns calls. I'm not sure if he's inept or dishonest, but he's not someone I'd recommend or hire.

Wendy was amazing! We had a case against the Poway school district because of the way our handicapped son was treated by his teacher. She was incredible at advising us of our rights and assisting us in filing all of the complaints. She wrote the complaints for us using our information. She was so patient and so compassionate with all of our questions. More attorneys need to be like Wendy and remember why they got into law in the first place....to help people! Thank you Wendy, our son is now in his new school because of your help and is doing amazing!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?

  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
