I hired Christine about 4 years back to help with my divorce and custody cases. She eventually helped me with getting a restraining order as well and has done a phenomenal job at every turn. It’s been an extremely difficult case but she has fought for me and my children like we’re her only client and that has made all the difference. Christine has always given sound advice and doesn’t sugar coat reality. She’s been in the game a long time and it shows! She knows her stuff and is very smart with her strategies. I highly recommend her to anyone!!

I have to give rave reviews for Christine and thumbs down reviews for "Family Court". Christine is up front as much as possible in all ways and her experience & attention to details is exemplary. She also goes out of her way to try to keep expenses down. Bottom line is that you can trust her to do a good job. Sadly, in Family Court, history has proven time and time again that the woman in a divorce or separation case can get away with virtually anything with total impunity to include any and every type of abuse to include child abuse, elder abuse & violence, lying, falsification of records or documents filed with the court, false testimony, lying at depositions, grand theft robbery, embezzlement, immigration marriage fraud, marriage fraud, and other forms of abuse. The court could care less. When you present even criminal information in court during live testimony, and you hear the presiding judge say; "that's no big deal, lots of people do that", is greatly disappointing and destroys trust in the court system when the judge does not care.

George Schraer is an excellent attorney, with 40+ years of experience in law. I have been a client of George since 2018, and continue to retain George for any legal matters in which we need counsel. Whenever I have queries, George always responds swiftly, in fact within a few minutes, and provides additional guidance and support. After having experienced ineffective and incompetent attorneys in the past, who had promised the world and delivered nothing, George's counsel was a welcome relief. Rather than taking our money at the first opportunity, George initially declined to represent my husband Dylan on appeal. This was also a huge part of what stood out to us about George. We didn't feel he was striving to sell us his service, but rather, gave us the confidence that we could depend on him to provide a rigorous review of Dylan's case. So we convinced George to draft a commutation application on Dylan's behalf. He did exemplary work in that regard, and took it upon himself to review Dylan's trial transcripts. To our excitement, George pointed out an issue which has become the focus of an appeal and relief in my husband's case. I would highly recommend George to anybody in a similar situation. George is reliable, straightforward, and his work is highly invaluable. The following is a statement from my incarcerated husband, Dylan: "George Schraer helped me put together a great commutation and found a crucial arguable issue for me in my case. I give this guy 5 stars. Awesome work. I have had bad luck with lawyers prior to George. I finally caught a break. George was great and helped me astronomically. Thanks George. If you ever read this, kudos to you. Dylan"

I hired Mr Schraer to help with litigation for a friend of mine with a very serious sentence. Mr. Schraer promise a lot but deliver little. He postponed his work with the case with endless excuses. "I'll start next week, I'm on this in two weeks, I'm a little delayed but hope to get this done next month and so on". When we are on a critical time limit this is not the way to do it. When he finally reviewed our case 6 months later than promised he found nothing he could use. Very convenient if you ask me, then he didn't have to bother doing any real work or investigation on the case, even if it had obvious issues. Luckily I was able to terminate the contract with Mr Schraer and move on to another lawyer who was interested in helping us.

Mr. George Schraer had selected the inncorrect date that Trial had started. He chose a date of the Pre Trial Motions, 402 Hearing as the start of Trial. It was not a mistake because it was pointed out to him and he still did not make the change or correct this critical date. Critical because this was an appeal and if corrected to the actual start of Trial Date, it would increase the time to an additional 5 days. However, even when he was told and faced with the facts of when trials actualy start, and would not change the date. The Judge, DA and Defense Attorney all state in the transcripts when trial began but George failed and kept his trial date which was incorrect.

Had a Exhibition of Speed ticket that was considered a "misdemeanor" and I did not take it seriously. I eventually came to conclusion that I needed to hire an attorney. Having Pablo being my first attorney was quite a good experience. He explained everything we had to do to accomplish what was best for me and how to get out of my ticket. He is good over phone and over email. The final outcome was that I got out of my ticket. I was so relieved and satisfied with my experience with Pablo. I would definitely recommend him in the future to others with common tickets such as mine. Thank you!

Attorney Fabian was so great I can't say enough to express our happiness. He and his office staff handled every aspect of our case with honest, personal, and professional service. We only had to meet with Attorney Fabian once and then everything else was handled over the phone or email. The price was very reasonable and he was able to get all charges dropped. The coolest thing is that they set up a private account that updates whenever anything changes. The whole experience was amazing!

Don't waste your time waiting for John to do your income tax. When I asked him that I needed to make the quarterly payment on Apr. 15, he said I didn't need to. Really?! This could cause me the tax penalty! He did not return my phone calls and emails. He even deleted my emails which contained important financial info. Then he'd ask me to re-send the same emails to him repeatedly. The 888 number on the webpage is disconnected. After giving him the tax documents for more than 2 months and without any status, I fired him. He's just utterly unprofessional.

I think Scannell is probably a good CPA and good at doing taxes. However, this past year we had some real issues with him. My husband got his tax stuff in late, so an extension was necessary. After that, we waited months for the taxes to be done. I was so desperate I started calling every two weeks. After a few months of this he literally picked up the phone and told me that every time I call, he puts our file on the bottom of the stack! I couldn't believe what I was hearing! Even after that it was months later, towards the end of the year, before we got them done, filed and got the refund. I will not go back but I would highly recommend getting all your stuff in quickly and on time if you want them done in any kind of a timely manner.

Daniel really saved our family in 2023, where we had a deposit dispute with our previous landlord. The outcome was satisfying, and the landlord returned our full deposit without us having to go through the small claim court. He helped us when there's no other attorney would, in a kind and knowledgeable way of explaining everything to us. Daniel always follow up with us during the process and respond in a timely manner. I highly recommend Daniel to anyone who's suffering the same or has any questions related tenant-landlord disputes.

Our case just concluded with Dan. It was very unique and specific. He was on top of all issues and timely and motivated to win. We obtained legal guardianship of our grandson and couldn’t be happier. His connections at the Cps and juvenile dependency court was key as he had worked there many years. He came to our house met us face to face and responded to our phone calls and texts . He specializes in juvenile dependency law so if that is what you are looking for hire him without reservation.

Daniel helped me tremendously! I’d been searching for an attorney to help me deal with a malicious former landlord. I spent a full year going back and forth with so many attorneys trying to find the right one. After Daniel heard me out and my situation we decided that a small claims lawsuit was the best option. It was such an emotionally and mentally taxing situation due to the grief the landlord put me through that I had difficulty compartmentalizing my emotional and logical responses at some points and Daniel was there to help me process and understand legal proceedings. He was there to help guide me through paperwork filings and the overwhelming frustrations that occurred due to the malice of that landlord. His support, knowledge, and understanding really got me through that dreadful lawsuit. Having no knowledge about lawsuit legal proceedings Daniel really pulled through as my advocate. Every panic text/email I sent he would promptly reply and help ease my peace of mind because the claims/evidence the landlord responded with was hogwash. His humanitarian side really shined through. In conclusion; I won my case, nixed the landlord’s countersuits, and walked away with a greater body of knowledge about lawsuit legal proceedings. Extremely grateful for Daniel being my attorney because without him I would have never been able to get through that.

Nicole Nemeth helped me get through a very difficult divorce case. In my case the other attorney fought about everything. My spouse wanted everything including alimony, the children, all of our bank savings and our house. Bottom line is they wanted to ruin me because my spouse had so much anger. Nicole would not back down, and she made sure that cooler heads prevailed. She know her stuff! She is honest and concerned about your family and children. I don’t know what I would have done without her. If you want a lawyer that will not give up on you, will stand by your side and fight for what is right then you chose the right lawyer.

I would recommend Attorney Nemeth to represent you in any legal matter. Attorney Nemeth was a life saver for my husband and me when he had to undergo emergency surgery. I called her to prepare a last will and testament for my husband and she understood how desperate I was and was very understanding. Attorney Nemeth immediately prepared the documents that we needed and brought them to the hospital for my husband to sign. I was such a basket case and so worried about the surgery, and the Attorney stayed with me and comforted me during this time. She is exceptionally caring and competent attorney and you can tell she truly cares about you as a person and not just a client.

I selected this attorney to represent me based on research and the reviews. I started filing for disability back in the summer of 2015. All was fine until the parallegal working with me left the firm. From that point on nobody was responsive to any communication. I finally got my date in front of an administrative judge. I called the office to try to get someone to give me guidance on what was the process from this point. It took a week for me to get a call back. Then they said they were no longer handling my case and I should have recieved a letter in the mail. The so called notification letter was dated from the Monday of that week and postmarked 2 days later (had I not reached out to them I may never have known I was no longer a client). The letter said the office said they decided not to handle SSD cases anymore in September 2015. They said they had another firm handeling my case who is reputable and accomplished. The attorney at that firm that handles their caes is known for dealing with drunk driving, workers comp, and pit bull attacks. Not too comforting when you have a social security disability issue. When I called the firm they had no record of my case. I am 45 days out from a judicial hearing I have been waiting for for over 18 months and now I have to find an attorney becasuse Ms. Jurewitz dumped me and didn't have the courtesy to notify me. She didn't even take verify that the people she thought she was transfering the case to were knowledgeable in the area or actually took the case.

According to the Oceanside Social Security office, I was the first veteran (in March, 2014) to file for SSDI benefits in San Diego under the new Expedited Program for Disabled Veterans (only for veterans Rated 100%, Permanent and Total). What I did not understand, at the time of my initial electronic filing, was that there was a 70+% chance that my claim would be denied, which it was. In fact, my claim was denied a second time when I appealed their first decision. I could not believe that the SSA wrote, in both their Denial Letters, that I was capable of working 100% time, especially given the fact (documented by the VA, and the UCSD Moores Cancer Center) that I had incurable cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy twice a week for the rest of my life. What??? There is an old saying which is completely true, "Once a Marine, always a Marine." I had a choice to make. I could do nothing and accept their verdict, or, I could appeal. I decided to deny their denial of my claim. So, what do you do when you are about to embark on any conflict? You prepare and get the best defense you can. The first thing I did was search the internet, where I found the AVVO website. I searched San Diego disability lawyers, and then I found the one with the highest (10.0) rating, Lee Jurewitz. I emailed her office. No response. I called them, and it was lucky I did because their server was having problems. I told them my story and was accepted as a client. If you are reading this, you should understand that SSDI claims take a LONG time to process. My claim took 17 months from my initial application, to the successful hearing with the Administrative Law Judge and my attorney, Ms. Jurewitz. And I had an expedited claim, not only because I am a disabled veteran (100% P&T), but also I am a TERI (terminal illness) case. 17 months. There were others at the downtown Social Security office, waiting for their hearings, who had waited over four years. So, you need to learn several things: 1) Be patient. SSDI claims will take a long time to process. They are understaffed and overworked. 2) Hire a good, reputable attorney. The maximum they can make on an SSDI claim is $6,000, or 25% of the retroactive backpay, whichever is less. They are well worth the money (which is deducted from your final payout from Social Security). 3) Document, document, document all your medical appointments, etc. Help your attorney to help you. 4) Be honest with your attorney, and above all, the Administrative Law Judge (ALJ). If you are truly disabled, it will be obvious to everyone because of your medical documentation and your demeanor. Do not fake anything or you will ruin your credibility and you will deserve to lose your case. It may seem that the ALJ hearing is adversarial, but it is the job of the judge to make certain you are disabled, and believe me, the ALJ will ask you some very personal and embarrassing questions--but that is their job. Be honest and make sure the judge understands your disability. Explain how your disability affects your life and why you cannot work. SSDI is not just handed out, and it should not be. If you are able to work, or you are faking it because you think you might get some easy money from the government, I will tell you right now that you are sworn to be truthful during your hearing and the penalties for defrauding the government are severe. They should be. So, if your initial SSDI claim is denied, which in all likelihood it will be, and you have a legitimate case, I would strongly urge you to find a good, reputable attorney to represent you, and AVVO can help you find the right attorney for you.

We hired Ms. Kleven and paid her thousands of dollars to process our immigration matter. She based the amount she charged us before she performed any work on what she estimated she may need to perform. The below review by Michael dated 3/5/18 sure doesn't sound anything like the Beth Anne Williams who has represented me for years. I too have had a long drawn out case having had a career that was very physically demanding and dangerous. As I result, I've required seven surgeries and extensive recovery periods over the years. Beth has always had my best interest at heart and has steered me in the right direction many times for which I'm thankful. There was a time when I just wanted to get it all over and done. Thankfully Beth convinced me to pursue continued recourse and treatment which has impacted my well being greatly. Her council, communication, attention to detail and issues certainly made this experience much easier and ultimately more beneficial to me. My case has finally wrapped up and I couldn't be happier with her results. Beth went above and beyond during the final stretch, and I am very thankful to have her as my attorney.

Rachel helped me in Arizona when I was going through a custody battle with my ex wife. It is not common a man trying to keep his kids when the ex wife wants to take them back. I felt my ex was going to take them after they lived with me for over 10 years. Rachel put together a great case and I was able to keep my kids, keep them in their schools. It was a dark time in my life, she helped make it better. She was always prompt and looked into things that would help my case, I felt she went above and beyond what other would have done. Rachel represented me in 2008, I have worked with a number of attorneys some bad, some good and a very few that I would say were excellent. Rachel definitely holds that distinction, of being an excellent attorney with me. So much so that I called her a while back wanting her to represent me in AZ again. Rachel is dedicated to her clients, and her profession, she demonstrated this while representing me to the highest level. She put my case in front of her own needs, representing me tenaciously I might add, during a time when she should in all honesty been at home taking care of herself. She was so successful for me that I can say without a doubt in my mind, if you can get her on your team, you should. You would definitely not want to be setting at the other table.

I’m still rebuilding from this tragic mistake. First red flag was when paralegal Lery said I could not check the box to seek reimbursement for the costs I’d be incurring in the case as plaintiff despite my actions being needed to simply locate our daughter despite it being a box on the required legal document used to initiate proceedings as plaintiff. Getting Elizabeth to advocate for me was like dragging a heavy sharp rock or performing invasive dental work. She appeared as if she didn’t have time to brush her hair and arrived a couple minutes late to the hearing time but at least in plenty of time before my case was called. While, I can accept and appreciate her advice that some of my evidence demonstrating the erratic behavior of my ex, wasn’t relevant to our custody situation in San Diego, her unwillingness to present more evidence resulted in tragic results as far as ultimately limiting my involvement in our daughter’s life. My Ex made unfounded allegations that I assaulted her, without any pictures, notes from seeking medical care, video, witnesses etc during our relationship in Point Loma and later La Mesa in Riverside County ~ 91 miles from where we lived. Elizabeth suggested I represent myself in Riverside County Court in August 2021. She said that if she decided to make the drive to Riverside she wouldn’t say anything since there were no grounds for a restraining order. Elizabeth didn’t question why there was no evidence and didn’t submit photographic evidence I had provided. My Ex cried during the hearing. Although, a restraining order wasn’t granted, a finding of domestic violence was made against me. It seemed as if she was unaware that such a finding could be made without a restraining order. This finding was the start of exponential life of misery for me. In September 2021 in San Diego East County Court in El Cajon, at the conclusion 3 Ex Parte hearings resulting in me getting only 6 hours per week visitation with our daughter initially before more time would be considered, it became apparent it would have been in my best interest to request a 30 day delay in the Riverside County restraining order hearing and I likely would have had a more favorable outcome in my San Diego ex Parte hearings. At the conclusion of the hearing Judge Miller (now assisting Supervising Family Judge in Central San Diego), asked Elizabeth if an October 2021 date CUSTODY & VISITATION &CHILD SUPPORT would work. Elizabeth told Judge Miller she would be unavailable that date due to vacation, however she took the October Court Date for me explaining another attorney (presumably Kathy Minella since she was the only other lawyer) would cover for her vacation and appear virtually for my hearing date. As it got to be 1-2 weeks before my court date, I requested to speak with Kathy Minella to update her on my family issues etc since Elizabeth wouldn’t be representing me. I was then informed Kathy Minella was gone on maternity leave (presumably she would have been aware of this & Elizabeth’s vacation schedule when I retained their firm) and unavailable. The firm actually tried to connect me to another lawyer Dawn Luchessi via email but then that didn’t pan out. (presumably they tried contracting with her as a temp). My own law firm Manilla had to ask for a continuance of our lawsuit because no one could show up virtually in court on the date they said would. If Elizabeth would have just answered Judge Miller question in a forthright manner, no the Oct. 2021 date wouldn’t workout, we could have likely gotten a date in November 2021. Since we asked for a continuance within less than a week or two of the hearing, my 1st CUSTODY, VISITATION &CHILD SUPPORT hearing after ex parte wasn’t until Jan. 2022 close to 5 months after I had retained Lefiti

I worked with him when he was an associate with Gordon Cruse...I had a terrible experience and found him to be disorganized and poor communicator. As a result, I clearly felt that I was over billed for his weak organization and communication skills.

We appreciate Matthew Blado's professionalism and gracious handling of our sister's alimony settlement. We live in Oregon and never met Matthew in person, but his easy manner and caring concern put us at ease from the start. He took the time to hear us and work through what was best for our sister. Mr. Vaage and Team were extremely professional and caring while representing me in a medical malpractice case. Elizabeth was my main point of contact at the office through the entire litigation. She took her time with me and explained everything that was going on and what my options were. Mr. Vaage and Elizabeth both had the deepest sympathy for what had happened to me and went well beyond expectations to help me with my case. They both knew what was needed and how best to take actions to solve the issues that came up. They took the time to create the best strategy for my case and execute it to a win. At no time did they try to do anything that was questionable or unethical. In fact, they did everything to ensure that we did not jeopardize the case with any falsehoods. Without any question I would recommend Mr. Vaage and Team as your representing attorneys. They will do what is best for you.

I could not be happier, nor could I write a more glowing review about the professional care and result that Mr. Vaage and his entire staff provided for me. Mr. Vaage represented me in a medical malpractice case. Every detail was attended to with extreme precision and concern for my best interests. I was very impressed with how Mr. Vaage and his staff took care of everything for me and made the whole process seamless. They guided me through an arduous time and made me feel like much more than a client, but rather more like family. They truly cared about me! My case was resolved faster than I anticipated and for a larger settlement than other attorneys told me they could achieve. Mr Vaage and his staff are consummate professionals. My gratitude will last forever.

Ms. Borkenheim provided both excellent representation and steady-handed guidance in a difficult legal matter. She quickly ascertained the facts of the case, contacted witnesses with sensitivity and care, and collaborated with me on developing a strategy. She kept me informed at every step, regularly providing updates and checking for understanding. A rule of thumb is that a good attorney provides the truth (both good and bad), proficient advice and representation, confidentiality and punctuality. Ms. Borkenheim went above and beyond on all criteria.

The number listed for the address that is provided is not in service. Christian came recommended from a co-worker and I was excited to be able to converse with him. Needless to say was a bit confused and discouraged when the information came back without any way to contact, though maybe that's a good thing?

I consulted with Matt on an employment case when I didn't even know if I had any stand against my previous employer. This was my first time seeking an attorney. Consulting with him empowered and further gave me the confidence that I needed to pursue a case. I didn't hire him in the end since I took a different route with how I was going to pursue legal action. However, I would highly recommend Verduzo based on my interactions with him. He listens well, respectful, thoughtful, timely, and took the time to explain what to expect. I am a social worker, so I valued these traits so much, and I was impressed. You will not be disappointed!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
