We just completed the green card application process with Veronica and came to a successful outcome! We couldn't have been happier to have worked with her. Veronica will be the first person we call if we ever have immigration issues or if we need to refer a friend to an immigration lawyer.
Looking back, if we had to make a choice again on which lawyer to work with, we would consider 5 key criteria. Veronica was awesome on all 5 of them. We'll go through each in detail below.

1. ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND A CLIENT'S SITUATION. When we spoke with Veronica for the first time, she listened patiently to us. She didn't assume anything, and instead made sure she had a good grasp of our situation, including the nuances.
2. KNOWLEDGE OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM. Veronica clearly knows the ins and outs of the U.S. immigration system. She helped us understand what to expect based on her past experience seeing clients through the system, and drew from her network of colleagues in immigration law. For example, we were able to adjust our life plans based on her estimates of the duration of each stage in the process.
3. ABILITY TO OFFER SOLID GUIDANCE. Knowledge of the law and the ability to provide customized advice are two separate skills. Veronica had both, as she was able to clearly lay out the options we had, along with the pros and cons of each. When our situation changed, she helped us formulate a revised approach to achieve our objectives. Our application was strong, no doubt because Veronica had the ability to take the perspective of a U.S. immigration officer reviewing our case.
4. SKILL IN TAKING A CLIENT THROUGH THE PROCESS TO COMPLETION. We had no idea that there would be so much paperwork involved. Veronica was instrumental in making sure we submitted the correct forms and included every piece of information required. She showed true ownership of the process and followed up with us if we took longer than expected to get information to her. She also kept meticulous records and knew the case status at any given time. The best moment was when Veronica called us with the good news that we had received our green card approval - a week earlier than we would have otherwise found out through the mail.
5. BEING THERE FOR YOU. Over the course of the process, Veronica went from being a lawyer to becoming our friend. She helped calm our nerves as we sat waiting for our immigration interview, made sure everything went well during the interview, and shared in our happiness afterwards. More generally, whenever we had questions or needed a quick chat, Veronica always made time for us.

After a life threatening injury accident, I very nearly tried to settle with the driver's insurance company on my own. What a mistake that would've been, but the lawyers I'd interviewed were more like car salesmen than legal advocates. Soon after I started making a tragic series of uninformed decisions, I had the good fortune to meet Jason. I must have seemed overly cautious, but he stuck with me, taking time to explain everything. His larger than life personality is more than perfectly genuine, it's perfectly suited to his profession.
At every turn, Jason clearly knew his stuff, from legal nooks and crannies to the maelstrom of hospital/doctor/fire dept billing depts, and insurance adjusters (one after another). Jason is a master communicator, forthright, practical, and shrewd.
To find a trusted lawyer is even more important than finding a trusted mechanic. The trauma, stress and uncertainty I'd been dealing with steadily faded and I was able to get back to my life! Even as we continued to wait on the other side, Jason would phone me with status updates and include me in his thought process.
Jason works incredibly hard. Even after we'd arrived at a settlement, meaning his fee was a known quantity, Jason continued to work on my behalf, pursuing billing inconsistencies that, once resolved, resulted in even more of the settlement coming to me. I was represented by the Veen Firm in a case that went to trial. My injury was caused by a law enforcement K9 that was running free in my neighborhood. I felt very confident about my choice to hire Elinor Leary based on her reputation and especially after our first meeting. A tenant and her boyfriend-lawyer decided to use COVID as an excuse so she could start law school while living rent-free at my expense. I contacted Jim in hopes that he might be able to help me with some trouble I found myself in with my local government's ordinances regarding land use for parking spots at my home. After listening attentively and asking pertinent questions to better understand my situation, he informed me in the nicest way, that my situation was not the type of case he specializes in. While any other attorney might be done with a non-potential client like me at that point, Jim later emailed me a list of attorneys who he thought might be able to help me. I was dumbfounded. Wow!

I was referred to James Heard for help with a permit appeal for a residential remodel in San Francisco. The matter included a complex mix of SF permit procedures, engineering and land use issues, and California civil code.
James was extremely generous with his time, even before I officially retained him. He exchanged ~20 emails with me, did preliminary research, and offered strategic advice. I talked to several other lawyers, and none were as helpful or knowledgable as he was in the pre-hire phase.
I did not end up needing to make use of James' services, but if I am ever in need of a Land Use lawyer again (heaven help me), I would definitely contact him first.

My husband and I met Bernardo for the first time toward the end of 2011 and hired him in early 2012 to represent us in adjusting my husband's status to permanent resident. Prior to meeting Bernardo we interviewed a handful of attorneys, each of whom made us feel judged and as if our case was hopeless. Bernardo was honest and realistic about our situation yet did not treat us with scorn regarding the circumstances that brought us to this point in our lives.
Our case required a waiver of grounds of inadmissability for my husband which unfortunately was denied. We then filed an appeal and received notice in August of 2014 that our appeal was sustained. In December of 2014 we were notified that our case was approved and my husband recieved his green card in the mail before month's end.
Throughout the near 3 years of working with Bernardo on our case he guided us thoroughly and competently through the process of collecting extensive documentation, responded to all requests in a timely manner, and provided us with the information and resources we needed along the way. He also dealt with what was at times a very emotional and frustrating process for us with respect, patience, and professionalism.
Since this was such a lengthy process with much time spent waiting to hear from the USCIS on next steps, we occasionally became anxious and reached out to Bernardo to inquire about the status of our case. Though he was always prompt in responding to our inquiries and thoroughly answered all of our questions, some of our anxiety and resulting inquiries may have been prevented by Bernardo prompting a check in with us after long periods of silence even if just to reassure us that our case is still in process, what he expects general next steps and estimated timelines to be, and any action he will take if those timelines elapse (i.e. making a status inquiry with the USCIS).
However, this suggestion for how Bernardo can further improve his already outstanding service is small in the scheme of things. He is truly an expert in his field and a great attorney. We would recommend him to anyone seeking councel for immigration matters regardless how complicated their situation.

We hired Bernardo to facilitate a change of status with immigration services. Great experience working with Bernardo and his staff. He was very responsive and knowledgable of the immigration process. He did an excellent job of preparing us for the interview, and ensuring we brought the numerous required documents and how to deal with the questions they ask was particularly helpful. His representation expedited the entire process from end to end. Unfortunately, dealing with immigration can be a cumbersome and difficult process but Bernardo helped make it as simple and streamlined as possible. Price was fair considering the hours required.

After retiring from being a State lawyer, when I opened up my small custom corset and wedding dress business in 1990, I chose Steve for my business attorney dealing with intellectual property and contract matters, such as obtaining a service mark for my business name, and avoiding litigation by a disgruntled, irrational supplier. Later I also chose him for my personal estate attorney and have consulted with him on multiple occasions over the past 26 years. He has assisted me not only with these legal matters but also represented me in an unlawful detainer to remove a non-rent paying tenant. I always feel Steve is on my side. He assisted me come to a rational response despite my emotions regarding a disrupted relationship with my sister who at the time was Executor of my Georgia-based mother's will. I also had to hire a Georgia lawyer when my mother passed. That lawyer merely did what I asked, was slow to respond to my questions on Georgia law, never answered some questions, and in the midst of much emotional family turmoil, without reason threatened to quit. I was appalled. Steve can manage the emotions that come with legal matters and accomplish what you want but without rushing to litigation. After my own 16 yrs. practicing consumer and employment law, my conclusion is that the rational thing for anyone to do is avoid litigation at all costs unless there is no other choice. Steve's certification in mediation makes him particularly competent to do just that, if you believe the same.

I found Mr. Matiasic online and he was the only one of three other lawyers who responded wanting more info. The others did not want to persue the case, thinking it hard to prove. Mr. Matiasic was the only one who asked to meet with me personally to discuss the case and it was only with Mr. Matiasic asking questions and explaining to me the what we needed to prove, that I was able to give him the solid information (photos) that resulted in a successful settlement. He worked with and for me from the initial contact in May 2007 until the settlement in Dec 2007, keeping me appraised at every step of the negotiations. I was more than pleased with the result.

It's cliché but true: sometimes the mistakes of the past come back to haunt us. And after making a stupid mistake when I was 19 and being arrested, pleading no contest, completing my sentence, having my record expunged by the court, and staying out of trouble for 20 years, my record resurfaced. Marsanne just settled a case for me today on a 2nd DUI Refusal while on probation for my 1st DUI. From what I have seen in the past year of waiting in court, watching the dockets go round-and-round, the "standard" plea bargain for a 2nd DUI is 10 days in custody, while a probation violation is an additional 20 days in custody. Marsanne was kind and professional, taking the time to ask me about myself, my education, credentials, and any other circumstances that would paint a favorable case towards the D.A. In the end, while I still plead to a 2nd DUI, I was only given 10 days of community service instead of 30 days in jail/community service. The refusal was also struck and probation was reinstated on the same terms and the 2 DUI's can be expunged under section 1203.4 of the California Penal Code. An all around satisfying end to a long and difficult case.
