After receiving a subpoena to testify in a criminal case, I hired Steve. Although I wasn't called, he was there, and explained everything I needed to know. Afterwards, I had many questions, and Steve was always patient, thoughtful, and gave me excellent advice whenever I called or emailed him. He is not coin-operated, as other attorneys are - he's from a better era than most, a Marine, with the wise, legal mind of a brilliant attorney who actually cares about justice, not lining his pockets. Highly recommend Steve Balash, especially for appellate work.

Steve, genuinely provides earnest and diligent legal representation for all of his clients. He'll take the time to first understand his clients situation and formulate a rational defense. I would not be here today, to write this review, if it wasn't for his Professional Services.

I was very pleased with the advice I received from Angela. I was looking for info in regards to protecting my personal assets, as well as my business assets, with the utilization of a trust. I had reached out to multiple lawyers and all wanted to charge me a fee just to briefly talk to find out if I even needed to retain a law firm. Angela took time to listen to my questions and she helped me realize that I am better off hiring a law firm since my wife and I have significant assets. In addition, we have a business that we want to pass on to our kids.

Doug was upfront with me from our initial consultation and saw my cxase through from beginning to end. Unlike many other criminal defense attorneys, Doug doesn't try and pull this "extra fee required if you are held to answer after your Prelim Hearing." When he quotes you your fee, that is the fee regardless of whether your case goes to trial or is settled beforehand. Doug gets the job done and is nothing but honest and upfront with his clients all the way. I highly recommend him to anyone who finds themselves in legal trouble here in Santa Barbara.

Excellent guidance through a very tricky transaction (foreclosure) in 20011. I learned a lot from Mindy Wolfe, and found her not only capable but thorough and graceful under pressure. That transaction did not work out, and I am using her again in a less complicated situation, delighted to be back in her capable hands.

After speaking attorneys in Santa Barbara, a friend recommended that I call and speak with Raymond Pulverman; I called him and without knowing my situation, he was extremely informative and took his time to speak with me. He was very patient and I felt extremely comfortable with him from the beginning. In comparison to my other consultations, it was a no brainer, and I can say with full confidence that he is one of the best, most knowledgeable attorneys I have met. Always able to get ahold of, kept me updated constantly, gave me insight and thorough explanations- I always felt like I was in good hands. Extremely thankful for the recommendation to contact him. Thanks again Raymond

No one ever wants to be in a work comp situation, but sometimes life has other plans. I was introduced to Megan by a friend and am so glad I was. We had to endure multiple depositions with my former employer and although it was not an ideal situation; I couldn’t have been in better hands than with Megan. She explained everything that was to happening, made the day as pleasant as possible, and somehow was able to smash away any fear I had originally had walking into my meeting. In the deposition she is force to be reckoned with, meaning she is a total badass! Not only did she not let the other lawyer get away with twisting my words, she was able to negotiate an early settlement. I would call onto her again in a heartbeat if I ever needed a work comp attorney again. She was an absolute pleasure to work with. Cannot recommend her enough!!

Pete is an extremely knowledgeable, assertive and easy to talk to tax attorney who provided guidance, case management and legal council for a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Both Pete and I were voted onto the Board of Directors at the same time. The the founder of the non-profit brought significant tax liabilities and other potentially fatal legal issues into the organization prior to the board formation. Pete gently extracted the required information out of the founder and the organization as a whole, managed the tax liability at the state and federal level, and provided guidance for the board during the process. I wholeheartedly recommend Pete Muzinich in the area of Federal and State tax law, and in particular tax law as it pertains to non-profits in the State of California.

I found Mr. Sanger through the review of his peers on this website; then meeting Mr. Sanger in person and having him handle my case, I’m of the opinion that he is truly the lawyer of lawyers. He examined my case from the macro to the micro, and how both sides of the matter might strategize or approach the issue. His office (Sanger,Swysen & Dunkle) is the definition of integrity and ethics. I’m grateful beyond words for his experience, knowledge and professionalism. If it’s your first time in trying to choose the finest lawyer for a matter that can’t afford mistakes, I highly recommend calling his office.

Rather like most people who go and see Renee, it was not a fun time in my life. Renee made a difference. She gave great advice, she knew the right blend of aggression and amelioration and, something that is very important to me, she is honest. Renee knows the law, but she also knows how and when to use it. She made decisions that were based on what was right for me, not just what would generate fees (sadly, that's rare). Pick Renee and it will be a great first step in putting your life back together.

I was looking for a competent and trustworthy family law attorney who could help in my Santa Barbara and Santa Maria matter. I was pleasantly surprised as to how patient, understanding and quick Lynn was at addressing my challenges and answering my questions. I know she has a lot of experience from working with the Santa Barbara Legal Aid Society which has allowed her to see many different and uniquely challenging situations in family law cases. She never made me feel stupid nor did she behave in a short and quick manner as many attorneys seem to do. I would recommend her services to anyone who appreciates family law experience and is looking to achieve results in their case. I am thankful to her for alleviating the stress I was feeling more than anything else. That feeling is priceless.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
