Micol was my public appointed defender for a case close to 5 years ago. Initially I was terrified of being appointed a public defender, and I believed that my case would be low priority and lost in a sea of other cases, as this was my impression of having a public defender, and not an expensive lawyer to work and focus on me as a top priority. Boy was I wrong. Micol was incredibly nice and professional. She listened to me thourghly and took her time to go through the evidence the police had and was honest about my opinions. She was active on talking with the state prosecutor and worked hard to get me the best deal possible. She did fantasies work. I have my self to thank as well, since i had done a lot of positive work on my life by the time I had to appear in court, which really helped me out. Micol was able to use this to help me stirke a deal with the prosecutor, getting one of my charges dropped, in agreeing to pleade to get the second one. She was able to talk them into only community service for a year (I had a lot of hours), and pay resitutution fees. I had the possibility of the deal also having my charge dropped to a gross misdemeanor, if I had a sizable payment of the restitution I could make during the court processes. Unfortunately I could not, so I was not able to get the best possible deal for myself, and still had to pleade to a Single felony conviction, but the fact that Micol was able to get almost have prosecutor lower my charges from a felony proves that she works hard for her clients. She was able to keep me out of jail, get one charge dropped, and build a positive case for me in the eyes of the state, and I am very thankful to have had her reprenting me. Could an expensive lawfirm have been able to do what Micol was so close to doing for me and keep me from having a felony... Maybe, but also maybe not. Overall if you get her to be your attorney, be honest, be good, be proactive, and be smart; Micol will be able to help you get through the rest.

Sandra is an extremely bright, well-versed, detail-oriented, friendly, and compassionate estate planning lawyer. She keeps up with the changing law and cares very much about her work and her clients. She explains complex legal issues in clear terms. She did our estate plan and we would not hesitate to go back to her if needed for a question or a change. As a client and a lawyer, I recommend her regularly to my own clients and friends.

Nicholas is a charming and intellegent man who helped me go to trial and win a case that had me locked up for 62 days. He also had negotiated an almost unheard of plea agreement in case I couldn't handle the way I was being treated in jail. Again, thank you Nicholas Gross. You are an asset to whoever may be graced by your service.

Young-Ji, alongside her law firm partner Jenna Labourr of Washington Injury Lawyers, represented me for a wrongful termination/disability discrimination case against my former small business employer. Jenna and Young-Ji assisted me in navigating negotiations successfully. Young-Ji did her homework and asked some tough, thorough questions which helped uncover useful information. My result surpassed both my former employer’s “final offer” and the mediator’s expectations. When my former employer said he wanted to make most of the settlement in “wages” Jenna and Young-Ji proposed a different categorization so both sides wouldn’t have to pay as much in taxes. I highly recommend Young-Ji and Washington Injury Lawyers. They may deliver where others can’t!

David is a fantastic corporate attorney. We have been working with David for seven years, almost since the dawn of our company, and he is the only corporate attorney this company has had. We were looking for someone who would understand our then esoteric field (artificial intelligence applied to clinical medicine) and who was comfortable working with startups. David Phinney is the perfect person to work with. In addition to holding a JD, he has formal degrees in science, and a deep understanding of legal matters affecting medical technology companies. He is really easy to work with; and his boutique practice makes things go smoothly. If I send him a message, he usually replies right away. He has helped us on numerous matters, and we have found his advice to be excellent.

In 2012 I was charged with misdemeanor assault for an incident involving hallucinogens. I won't go into any more detail beyond saying that I was being charged by the city, the victim, a stranger, declined to press charges. I had the good fortune of being assigned Ms. Giske to represent me as a public defender. Because of her, I was given a deferred sentence after a year of probation and drug addiction assessments. Now, I have very little experience with the legal system, and it's hard to say exactly how hard she worked for me on my case. I am relatively certain, however, that she saved my ass on multiple occasions. Here are the facts: I was often late to probation meetings (buses, oversleep, having to cross the lake, etc. etc), missing a session at least once. My PO clearly didn't like me much. I was occasionally late on payments for fines. Despite all of this, my sentencing was never changed from how it was originally. A few month or so before my last court date, I was assigned a new public defender. I never met her, and I don't think I had correspondence with her for more than an email or so. When the due date for my last evaluation had passed without my having done said evaluation, I couldn't get a hold of the new PD. I sent Megan an email, and she met with me at the courthouse on that day to make sure I was informed of the options, and though it's fuzzy, I was given a continuance. Though I was still assigned the other PD, I was never able to get in touch with her again. Fast forward about a year. I haven't followed up with my court date stuff. I missed my last court date. I'm swooped up off the street one night on my way home and spend the night in Seattle jail. I am 100% convinced I'm screwed. I have no money to pay a lawyer, and obviously I'm going to get smacked hard for not doing everything I needed. The next morning I go to the courtroom, and like magic, Ms. Giske was there. My case ended up being dismissed. Given how things played out, it seems this was probably going to be the result regardless of who my PD was. Maybe there is some legal clause that obligated her to be there for me. I doubt it. I don't think I ever sent her a thank you note. If you're reading this, thanks for helping me through that difficult time. Your assistance is not forgotten.

Mr. Poisel is currently my attorney in a serious criminal defense case. Mr. Posiel is very reachable, communicative and serious about his clients. I've only seen him irritated once when a judge would not grant him a continuous for his other client and cleverly made a record without the continuous renders him ineffective to his client. Other than thi I feel he is very effective and serious and trust that his knowledge and experience will prove me innocent of my charge.

Attorney Denevan is exceptional. In the midst of an emotionally devastating legal situation, Attorney Denevan never lost sight of our true goals. He was unwavering in his compassion for the difficulties we experienced, yet he never balked when we needed to be aggressive and strong in our case. Years later and countless hours in court, meetings and mediation, we have to admit that while we have our disappointments in some of the outcomes, they are related to the uncertainties germane to legal "battles" and not in any way to our representation by Attorney Denevan. Opposing counsel engaged in very painful name-calling and offensive assertions which were unsupported and not true. Our natural desire was to respond in kind, however Attorney Denevan always brought us back to our true goals and was very clear that he would not engage in such damaging shenanigans. He has a brilliance that we can only truly appreciate after the fact. He puts personal and legal integrity first. He taught us that regardless of legal outcomes, personal integrity is the one outcome we can control. It has been an Honor to be represented by and to learn from Attorney Denevan.

Corey represented me in a detention hearing for a probation violation two days ago. Clearly, she was successful in securing my bond. Her preparation was impeccable. She made sure to get in contact with anyone who could help my situation and it was that preparation that made the difference. In the courtroom, she proficiently conveyed my situation to the judge and I can't be happier with the outcome. She has been very accessible for me in the meantime and returned my call as soon as she got to the office in the morning. I would encourage anybody looking for an attorney that actually cares about their situation to hire Ms. Endo. Because that's what makes the difference, an attorney who cares about your case as much as you do!

I have had nearly 25 years of immigration history in the U.S.; went through five different visas. During all those years, I was blessed to be represented by six immigration attorneys from three different law firms, who did a lot to help me and my family. Mr. Mosher happened to be my sixth immigration attorney. My wife has had more than 18 years of immigration history in the U.S.; she stayed on four different visas, one of which was different from mine. Mr. Mosher helped my wife and me to get naturalized. I would like to highlight some important moments of Mr. Mosher’s work in my naturalization process: Mr. Mosher offered me a really nice discount on legal fee for my naturalization because he did my wife’s naturalization. Neither did I know, nor did I ask for that discount. I had my own idea of how to do one thing and was willing to pay much extra for that. Mr. Mosher honestly explained to me that however the idea was okay, it was not really worth the cost. He advised me to do as he says. I listened to Mr. Mosher. That saved me a lot of money. Mr. Mosher filed an additional form along with all the required evidence at no cost for me. The form was approved by USCIS. That saved me money. Before going into the naturalization process, I had a very serious concern, which with all of my and my wife’s combined immigration experience I was not sure of how to address. I prepared a letter to Mr. Mosher on three pages explaining my situation and asking for his advice. To my astonishment, Mr. Mosher promptly answered my difficult question in just one sentence. He was right! Mr. Mosher’s advice on that was really precious; it saved me lots of time, effort, and money. And he did not charge me for that. That was even before we started working. Then, I was thinking of translating one document into English. Mr. Mosher told me that I do not need to translate that document. That was correct! That again saved me time, effort, and money. The USCIS made a typographical error in my last name. We filed an e-Request to correct that error. USCIS had not been responding for a long time after their expected reply date. I asked Mr. Mosher if it was okay for me to write them in My USCIS Account. Mr. Mosher approved. The response I received from the USCIS was correct in general, but very confusing to me. They thought it was we who made a mistake. Then, the USCIS had corrected that typographic error, however three more discrepancies were introduced in my first and middle names. It had been really frustrating for me. Mr. Mosher explained the situation to me and told me not to worry, and told me of what to do. The things went exactly as Mr. Mosher explained. Before I went to the naturalization interview, I had a preparatory telephone conference with Mr. Mosher. That was really helpful. Many things he told me, I experienced in real at the interview. In many parts I knew exactly what to expect. That saved me my energy to answer some difficult questions at the interview. I have always been trying to choose the best possible attorneys to represent me and my family. I found Mr. Mosher to be an outstanding immigration attorney: knowledgeable, helpful, and trustworthy. I would freely recommend Mr. Mosher as an immigration attorney to everyone seeking immigration help.

My company, the Rock Dojo, hired Ashley to help us write an independent contractor agreement. From our first meeting, it was obvious Ashley was passionate about helping small businesses build solid legal foundations for future growth. She walked us through the legal rules and regulations teaching us about the state-regulated differences between an employee and an independent contractor, so we won't run into trouble five to ten years down the road. She exceeded our expectations in every way anticipating the pitfalls and blindsides. I'm not incredibly familiar with Ms. Putka as she is new to my case. I can tell you what I see so far from watching all the cases that came before me. First off she is a very beautiful woman with a sharp mind and a hard charging work ethic. You could see that her caseload this morning was overwhelming by the shear volume but she didnt get overwhelmed. She just pushed forward rounding up her clients and interpreters as well as having to familiarize herself with the cases as it seemed most were just assigned to her. I will know more as time progresses but I have to say so far I am impressed.

Fortunately, Drew provided the support I needed with exceptional communication skills. He kept me updated on my case’s progress, welcomed any and all questions, and was sure to keep my goals in mind while conducting the work. Pat and her incredible team stepped up to help when our family lost an Adequate Cause determination due to an insufficient review of the evidence we presented showing extensive medical and educational neglect of my fiance’s kids by their mom. We had been turned down by multiple well known appeals attorneys in the area. Apparently NO ONE wins appeals for adequate cause in family court — ESPECIALLY DADS — so no one wanted to take us on. We were running out of time, when at the last minute we were referred to Pat. I think because of her strong civil rights bent, and her work with LGBTQ clients, she had an open mind when it came to our dilemma. We had strong evidence that had been ignored. We had a suicidal, special needs kid going without treatment or support. I think her sense of fairness is what made her scratch the surface where others shied away. The mom worked at the courthouse where the case was heard and all of the commissioners and judges knew her. Several recused. But even the ones who didn’t saw her as a colleague and we never stood a chance for a fair hearing - though there was no way we were ever going to be able to prove bias. Instead, Pat approached the appeal as a thorough, logical, evidentiary walk-through which systematically picked apart the lies, inconsistencies and unsubstantiated claims made by the mom. This deconstructed her narrative and showed it for the smokescreen it was. By the time she had laid out 2+2, it was obvious the case equaled 4, and that the Skagit County court had missed it completely. It was amazing to watch her talk to the appellate panel. It was obvious they viewed her as a peer and someone who would bring very valuable arguments to be considered. Until we saw those interactions I don’t think we were really aware of WHO she was in the legal community and the tremendous respect and standing she had. But we got it at that moment and now recognize the last second miracle we were given when she took our case. 10 months after we filed the appeal, the opinion came back that the Skagit judge had abused his discretion and our case was remanded for trial. They even published the opinion. We went on to win primary custody, sole medical and educational decision making (with a minor area of exception for one child) and have been able to start getting them the help and support they needed. Pat went up against the SYSTEM that is stacked to the rafters against fathers and prevailed. She saved our kids from a lifetime of neglect and an abusive level of alienation that had been going on for many years. She saved our family. It’s that simple. We are forever grateful.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
