I hate using lawyers and think most are incompetent. However i found a great one in Mr. Ditlow. He helped me resolve a custody issue with my sons mother and was great to work with. He communicated well, was detailed, and was very knowledgeable. He returned every email and phone call i made to him in a very timely manner and actually explained things to me in a way that i could understand. I hope i never need him again but if i do he is my man.

Dear potential future client, I’ve been where you are at this very moment, looking at reviews and thinking or responding to a divorce. It can be a scary moment to face alone. So much can depend on these next few actions. So please take a moment to breath and read the following. I was married for 15 years at the time the divorce was finalized. I was blindsided by my ex-wife's choice when I got the paperwork served to me. I was heartbroken and felt like a failure as a husband and more importantly as a father. I had three beautiful kids, an almost 20-year military career, a house/assets, and now a future that was in a limbo of some extreme altering from one person’s decision. It was overwhelming. So many thoughts and feelings flooded my mind and body. I knew I needed help, and quickly, so my response was to find the right people to help me through this process, which started with internet searches, reading testimonials, and making phone calls just like you, which lead me to Jad and Kara. If I can save you the wasted time please stop and call Marrison Family Law. I was quickly put in touched with Jad and Kara. Jad and Kara respond quickly and deliberately. They were able to guide and inform me of everything I needed to know and act upon to protect myself and my interests. Quickly the ex-spouse realized my legal team was head and shoulders better than her lawyer. She also realized that it was in her best interest to negotiate and play fairly otherwise she would be facing a very difficult time along with mounting legal fees and what Kara would coin the weight of a legal whale crushing down on her. This is extremely important moment for you, and there are major life decisions being made that are going to have an impact on your future. Please do not go at it alone; pick a team that has a proven track record. Listen divorce is brutal for everyone involved even if it is mutual and I would suggest having experts to help you. There are many different lawyers you can choose from, but I can personally vouch for Jad, Kara, and Marrison law firm. From the first contact until notice to withdrawal it was handled delicately and most professionally at all times. They gave me something that I was not able to find with other places I had talked to before, which was a reassurance that they had my back no matter what. Throughout the entire process, I did not have to worry unlike my ex-wife, which allowed me to place my focus on other more important aspects of my life, like spending time with my kids, getting the things I needed to help me move forward, and peace of mind, it is critical that you can think clearly to make decision. You have heard it over and over, if you are facing a legal issue get a lawyer. Men as a guy I went through great lengths to make sure my legal team was going to defend my rights as a male. This is them. Ladies, as a guy I would have not wanted to know that my ex-wife had just hired Jad and Kara to defend her. To Jad and Kara, sincerely I am forever grateful that our paths crossed and you helped bring closure to this life-changing event for me. A simple thank you doesn’t ever seem to be enough. However, thank you for what you did for this single father — to the rest of you still reading. I wish you the peace of mind I had while going through this process and I hope you call Marrison law firm and request Jad and Kara. It's a choice you will later thank yourself for doing.

If you are getting divorced, you need an attorney, and arguably, even if you are well-acquainted with the legal arena. I started my divorce without one and soon realized that I needed one, which was one of the two best decisions I made. The second, and of equal weight, was hiring Joseph A. Ditlow (JAD) of Marrison Family Law. If you don’t know what to look for in an attorney, the internet provides lists of standard characteristics that every good attorney should have. JAD has them all, but let me explain what sets him apart even further: JAD won’t compromise his integrity or reputation for a client. He careful filtered the information I gave him to ensure I was being honest and thorough, giving him a clear understanding of the coming battle. Divorces are charged with emotion. It’s easy for a client to think of an attorney as a counselor and lose track of time. Counselors are far less expensive than attorneys. Still, attorneys need a degree of history and relational information for context. JAD was mindful of the clock and my strained budget and masterfully helped me stay on track and task. More so, though, JAD captured the information he needed to understand me and my concerns. My case took unexpected and somewhat shocking turns and dives that placed enormous and sometimes short-notice demands on assessing how to respond and proceed. JAD remained unshaken, professional, and hugely supportive. His confidence and encouragement was profoundly meaningful and beneficial to me, and his ability to shift gears with speed, accuracy, and clarity exceeded measurable value. I was sometimes given information I didn’t like, or that I thought was wrong or found unfair. JAD understood and helped me face some facts with candor but grace, even when I responded with a lack of grace myself. There was a lot of noise in my case, and because there is only so much time in the court room, we had to discern very carefully what really mattered. JAD focused on my desired outcomes while advising me on what was realistic, what should be our priorities, and what risks should be abandoned until we reached an agreement based on what I could live with. In my case, his method and approach was monumentally successful. There were several things he did that were really the glue that held everything together: uncompromisingly ethical; researching; exhaustively exploring and/or pursuing preferred options with opposing counsel; having flexibility; making connections; really hearing me; checking in on me; being tirelessly attentive and responsive to my case, even after hours; educating me; coaching me on the value of timing and waiting; his own self-discipline; and especially, meeting me where I am based on my world view. JAD and I were together on my case for a long time. Time can make or break any relationship because it provides the opportunity to really see what someone is made of. I am certain that my case is only quiet for the moment, and not really closed. Therefore, knowing what JAD is made of, we will be working together again, eventually. I don’t know what JAD’s personal worldview is. He has never volunteered it, and I have never asked. What I do know is this: My worldview prompts me to thank God for him.

Armstrong Graham has exceeded all of my high expectations. Previously, with another firm, I had spent thousands of dollars and so little results. Armstrong was completely transparent and totally upfront with expectations of what kind of money it should take. He follows up with me regularly and clearly lays out what the next steps are and how that pertains to me. Interview Armstrong for your next legal needs. After speaking to him I hand ZERO desire to interview anyone else. During our initial first phone call I was at complete peace just knowing that he was the one to be in my corner and represent me. I couldn’t be more happy with my legal choice.

I began working with Brad and and the Bell and Pollock team shortly after my family was involved in a head-on car accident. After interviewing other firms and significant research, we are glad we chose his firm. From the moment we began working together, the firm took exceptional care for mine and my family's cases. Brad guided us through the entire process and I could not be more grateful for the time and effort his whole office provided. I would highly recommend Bell and Pollock to anyone in need of exceptional legal care.

I was having some concerns and needed a consultation and information from a lawyer and wanted a good law firm that is more personal and not passing me along to whomever could squeeze me in. Bell and Pollock was a great choice for me based on their knowledge and expertise in the areas of law I needed to discuss. Gary Bell was very instrumental in providing me with detailed information that was beneficial for what I was looking for. I value ethics and this law firm made me feel heard. Gary took time to not just meet with me but had me send over my concerns and he spent time going over my information before the consultation so that he was able to be very specific to me and my concerns and spoke in a way that made sense and not just ‘legal speak’. The fact that Gary and his firm take consultations seriously and are so open to truly helping clients is amazing in this day and age! Everyone I spoke to there was so helpful and professional. It is a welcome change to know you can find a trusted law firm. If I ever need representation, I would definitely choose him and his law firm to represent me.

We started our journey with another attorney with little effort. We made a bold decision to change firms. Jeremy was able to get an agreement in place which helped us not going to court. Not only did this save time and money, but it also took off all the stress from our situation. I highly recommend Shufflebarger Law Office. We know where to turn in the future.

Over the last 10 years I've dealt with roughly two dozen different attorneys across the US with specialties in employment, real estate, family law, and general business contract law from tier 1 firms to leading local firms and solo small firm practices. Tony Viorst is without a doubt in the top 1 or 2 out of the ~24 lawyers that I've ever had the pleasure of interacting with. His rare combination of legal expertise, wisdom, bulldog personality, and most importantly ethics are a lethal mix that set him apart. I would recommend Tony to anyone who needs representation from a highly competent litigator in any of his specialty practice areas and beyond. Thanks again, Tony!

Professionalism and patience is what one should look for in a lawyer and with USADefend Law Firm you will find it. We contacted Christian M. Frank Fas, Esq. thru a recommendation and were not disappointed in the results. Working through the process of a change of citizenship status is not an easy job and it takes a lot of paperwork and back and forth. Thankfully, me and my wife were explained the process not once, but all the times we had to re-ask the same questions with months in-between. It is a long process, but thanks to the professionalism of Christian M. Frank Fas, Esq. we were lead thru it with certainty in that the correct paperwork was submitted.

In response to Burnham Law: apparently it is not, because I was just able to finalize my divorce without it, with the professional help of a different law firm that didn't push me into the use of a business evaluator. Also, let's be 100% transparent and honest here. You had 3 months to tell me about a 'knowing waiver'. Instead, your lawyers told me EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE all that time, i.e. that no specialists would be needed in case of an amicable settlement. Happy to share those emails to show other people about your very shady handling of my case. Only when you learned we were headed for a settlement outside of court and in the advanced stages of reaching a full agreement (i.e. no more money for you) did you mention a business evaluator was 'indispensable'. You were clearly trying to push for more conflict = more money. Extremely bad practice that falls within the sad cliche of US law firms being all about money, not about people. ORIGINAL POST: Hired this firm for my divorce. Clearly communicated that I wanted an amicable settlement outside of court, even if this meant foregoing my husband’s business assets. This approach was confirmed and reiterated many times with my appointed lawyer Brian Lewis. Brian left the firm from one day to the next, I was appointed Mark Smith. At this time my husband and I had taken our own initiative to meet with a (non court ordered) mediator, with whom we made significant progress towards a resolution / settlement. In the midst of these negotiations Mark Smith started pushing for a business evaluator to evaluate my husband’s businesses even though I had made it very clear I did not want to pursue that. When I refused, they withdrew from my case. I had spent $18,000.00 to date with Burnham Law and had to start all over again with someone else. Clearly, Burnham Law was actively trying to push my case to court to get more money out of me.

Outstanding Trial Lawyer After I was wrongly charged with a very serious crime I hired David Jones. David did explain to me the risks and benefits of going to trial. I chose to go to trial and David was behind me the entire time making sure I received a fair trial. David meticulously prepared for trial. David did phenomenal at trial. David didn't miss an objection and he was quick. By the end of the trial, the truth was revealed, and David and I beat that vicious, fabricating, exaggerating DA and a jury found me NOT guilty of all charges. During that stressful time in my life, David was a pleasure to work with. David was worth every penny.

They used to be Cantafio and Hammond. Their employment lawyer Christine Breen took my case, when I was at my lowest, just let go after years of workplace bullying, and recently retaliated against for whistleblowing, and contemplating suing my employer. She promised to help, but then was MIA and refused to return calls. Yet she charged $2000 doing work no one asked her to do, as I already signed a severance agreement not to sue. She never wrote a demand letter. Never did anything substantial, except wrote 2 emails. I had to tell her to cease and desist charging me. I had to bring this case to the bar association. She immediately called, yelling, you agreed to pay this amount. We negotiated, and she reduced it by a few hundred. I should've gone to the bar association and got her disbarred. When you are at your most vulnerable, you cannot trust these people.

I contacted Randy for representation in a criminal defense matter in Westminster, he was attentive and personable over the phone, and provided a very reasonable fee structure, so I retained him over the 8 other lawyers that I explained my case to. In the end Randy delivered a Grand Slam win which was a full dismissal of my charge. Honesty, integrity and transparency are hard to come by these days and I believe I received above and beyond that. If you want to win your case…look further. I hired Pete McGuire to handle my work comp injury case and it was a nightmare. He didn’t keep me up to date. For example, I took all my court documents to Mexico thinking I was having a virtual hearing when it was canceled. I had a good case, but hardly got anything back. He didn’t listen to me or what I wanted from the case. Terrible experience. Not very knowledgeable on work comp stuff.

First of all, I would like to state that I am somewhat familiar with lawyers. I have been in business 19 years and during the course of that time I have engaged many attorneys for mergers and acquisitions, financial counseling, legal disputes with the State of Texas, HR related matters, contract negotiations, and litigation. Having said that, I am not an expert nor a novice. In19 years, I have never worked with a legal group that is more disorganized, incompetent, and ignorant of basic financials. What is apparent with this organization is they focus on the billing more than the service. I am not one to argue fees provided there is a demonstration of competence and integrity. Unfortunately, you will not find it with this firm It would appear that the Dadvocates and Samera were once competent and respectable if you look at the reviews. However, I would encourage you to look at current reviews. Most are quite poor and this should discourage you from engaging with them. I sincerely hope that this law firm considers these reviews b/c they have fallen from grace and should seriously contemplate dismissing Samera and her team.

My Attorney Mr Tolini is absolutely fabulous. He cares and when he dives into a case he 110% does so with gusto. Before Mr Tolini promises anything, he will go thru all the videos/paperwork and files with a fine tooth comb. I recommend Mr Tolini to take care of your case 100%. I am incredibly relieved to have Mr Tolini recommended to us. He listens and cares.

I’ve called this firm and spoke with both Mr. Barker and Mr. Tolini regarding my boyfriend’s cases. They were super helpful and unlike most lawyers, they return your calls and actually take the time out of their day to sit down and speak with you, answer all of your questions and aren’t in a hurry to just get off the phone with you. They were informative and clear about what to expect and that put our minds at ease during an uncertain time. Thank you for the professionalism.

James Cordes provided terrible advice. His drafting was sloppy and required extensive redrafting by opposing counsel, and he advised me to take a terrible deal. Because of James, I am taking home a fraction of my income. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize how bad it was until firing him and employing new counsel. He is a nice man, but a bad lawyer. I wish I had gotten a second opinion before it was too late.

James is a nice man. But he cost me 100s of thousands of dollars that I didn’t need to pay. I consulted with two additional attorneys, but it was too late and the damage was done. He also gave me bad advice about the likely outcome of a court case if we went to trial. The money out-of-pocket going to my ex wife was earmarked for my children in a trust. In short, she is taking my kids’ inheritance and James advised the outcome. James is minimally competent—he included items in the separation agreement that I did not okay, massive amounts of typos in court documents, and he advised that if I went to court I might have to pay lifetime maintenance (I later found out that the statutory period would have been 7.5 years, not 40+ years (if my ex-wife lived to be 80) as he suggested could be the outcome. James means well and seems like a nice guy, but he is a bad lawyer.

We hired Lester Nieves to represent a very complex criminal case. I completely trust him to represent who we hired him for. He definitely knows the law and your rights . I would recommend him above any other attorney including the ones that are way too high priced for our budget. Lester's fee to retain and represent are more than fair. Out of all the attorneys I've spoken with we picked him and I have absolutely no regrets at all Thank you so much Lester!!!!

Having no experience in this field at all, I was pretty terrified when I was shown to be at fault for a car accident. The entire team was excellent gave me a lot of information helped me to remain calm, and on the day of Katy in particular went way above and beyond the call of duty to help facilitate me reaching the courthouse on time. I was very impressed on every level with this operation. Oh, and they significantly reduced the amount of trouble I was going to get into! Well worth the retainer.

I can’t further express the gratitude that I have for this team. Nic and Sarah have both been so solid through out not only the duration of my court cases, but completely went above and beyond following my court dates to assist me the entire step of the journey through to the end date of my probation. Sarah continued to be there to answer my calls, emails, texts questions, everything from dmv questions, to probation questions, to out of state dmv questions. My case happend while on vacation so I was unable to attend court in person and Nic was above and beyond in getting our hearings heard as early as possible via zoom and was able to attain the best outcome that could have been possible thanks to the investigating he did into the case. Without this team I genuinely believe that this would have gone a lot differently and I would still probably be paying an unfair price. I highly recommend this firm to anyone in need that wants to get the best possible outcome in the court rooms. Thank you Sarah for answering all of the stressed out phone calls from me and countless other cases I’m sure and continuing to do it in a positive and re assuring way every time.

Dianne was referred to me through Legal Shield, a service offered through my employment to help me with my Child Support Modification initiated by my ex-wife. We established a client-attorney relationship after a short phone consult in late December 2023. There were some technical difficulties submitting my retainer payment of $3,500 online into her preferred MyCase Client Portal. I ended up paying her first invoice of $1,423 by credit card for services she had already completed. Shortly after that transaction was paid, my inital retainer payment of $3,500 was finally withdrawn from my checking account. I figured I might as well keep it there since my case was still open. Dianne ghosted me days before a scheduled telephone pretrial hearing with the Courts. My repeated calls, texts, and messages were unreturned until the day before the meeting! I was so stressed and panicked thinking that I am no longer represented. Fortunately, we were able to settle my case prior to our court appearance. But the opposing counsel also had difficulties getting a response from Dianne near the agreed deadline. We were able to eventually finalize and signed everything through the Courts on February 29, 2024. Dianne has now ghosted me again after numerous requests to have her send me the final invoice for her services and still has my $3,500 retainer captive for nearly 2 months!! I'm not sure what is going on now. I see multiple 5 star reviews early on but this is not my encounter with her recently.

Dianne is very experienced and knowledgeable. I found her to be extremely compassionate during a time that I needed support, and she understood that there was a human in the equation from the start. I interviewed several attorneys and I found that Dianne was the most relatable, intuitive listener in the interview process. She answered my many questions about legal processes and documents, helping me understand the construct of what I was going through. I was more confident with her on my team, and while I believe no one wins in divorce, I think she helped me wrap my head around my own situation and take control of my outcome.

Jen helped me unravel a very sticky situation last year regarding custody and child support payments. I hired her again this year to assist in coming to a final resolution on unfair alimony payments. She was so supportive and caring through the entire ordeal and helped me reach a very acceptable compromise through mediation (while avoiding the expense of going to court!). Her counsel has been invaluable and I have recommended to my friends and family in need of family counsel as well.

I hired Jennifer for a non-contested divorce and she took the time to go through my soon-to-be-ex's and my agreement and explain the law thoroughly. She assisted me in determining that certain provisions would not "fly" with the Court and came up with creative solutions to achieve what we desired. She saved me (and my ex) from making a huge mistake and I could not be more grateful. I would definitely hire Jennifer and would recommend her to anyone seeking guidance in their divorce, whether it be contested or non-contested.

I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional legal support I've received from Trista during an immensely challenging period in my life. Her unparalleled expertise in family law and razor-sharp intelligence have been pivotal in guiding me and my child through the intricacies of the family court system. I've had three lawyers, seen several more perform in court, and Trista is among the best. Trista wields a clarity of thought and an ability to articulate complex legal matters in a way that is both comprehensible and empowering. From our initial consultation through every subsequent interaction, she demonstrated an unwavering commitment to my case, providing invaluable insights and strategic, fact-based guidance that proved instrumental in achieving positive outcomes despite constant attempts from opposing counsel to muddy the waters. In all motions and hearings, Trista and her equally excellent paralegal Charlie showcased not only legal prowess but also an understanding of the emotional nuances involved. Their compassionate approach, coupled with an impressive attention to detail, made me feel heard and supported throughout the legal process. Trista and Charlie's level of professionalism and responsiveness is also unquestionable. They both consistently communicated updates promptly, ensuring that I was well-informed at every stage. They responded to my rare emergency situations within minutes. I can genuinely say that as their client, I felt a sense of security and confidence despite an endless barrage of false accusations and distraction from the other parent and their counsel. I could not more highly recommend Trista and Price Family Law to anyone seeking a family law firm that goes above and beyond. Her remarkable capabilities have made a profound difference in my life, and I'm incredibly thankful for the peace of mind she has provided during this challenging journey.

It's with great pleasure to recommend Trista for any complex Family Law matter. Her attention to detail, impeccable memory, and thorough skillset in the courtroom explains why it was apparent Judges respect and listen to her. Complex cases can be challenging when small details can make or break the outcome, and with Trista leading the strategy, I was fortunate to have a favorable outcome. Her investment in her clients cases is sincere and genuine. I was happy with the outcome, while she was critical of herself wanting more in OUR case (she's in it for you and your family more than I've seen any other attorney invest in their families). Opposing counsel in this case was a stereotypical type of attorney. One who liked to play on words, make assumptions and toe the line of transparency and honesty. Trista was phenomenal at weeding through the drama, their smoke and mirrors courtroom show, and keep the facts of the law clear and concise to the court. At the end of the day, this approach has won her a lot of credibility with Judges across many counties. A factor to consider when you're looking for representation in the family courtroom is who has good rapport with the Judges, not who's the "bulldog"... although, I'd definitely say she was a "bulldog" in my case as well since nothing seemed to rattle or distract her. #LaserSharp #HighlyRecommend

I absolutely loved Trista and her paralegal Charlie!! They worked very hard, were very professional, yet completely down-to-earth. A divorce frazzles anyone, and to be lost in a sea of legal chaos where you have no idea what the hell is going on, is terrifying. Trista and Charlie completely took care of me like good friends. (I actually STILL feel like they are good friends!) Not only did I come out of the divorce with an unbelievable settlement, the two of them made the process bearable, held my hand through everything. I would HIGHLY recommend her as a divorce attorney, and would use her a million times over. Thank you both SOOOO much!!!

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
