Whether he represents you for free or paid I would NEVER use him for anything ever again. He lost my case and did not even try. Seems as though he wanted the case to be lost so that I would hire him. He kept telling me after the case was closed, " You could appeal and I could represent you, you would just need to pay the retaining fee before I do anymore work". He seems to be doing things as long as it benefits him. You go to him for advice and he will send you to his paralegal or never answers your emails, calls or text messages. Save your money, case and time!

Hands-down, the worst attorney that I’ve ever dealt with. Steven was assigned to me during a CPS case, he was consistently trying to get me to appeal the case just to pay him instead of him fighting in the court at the time. There were so many mistakes made in my case that I’ve had to spend upwards of $10,000 to correct Mr. Debye’s errors. Additionally, I found mistakes that even a rookie attorney should’ve found and when I did ask for his assistance, he offered to help for $1200 not until I continue to go to the court did he attempt to help! I would not recommend Stephen free or retained. He is more of a headache than he'll help. He has a horrible attitude and does not respect his clients. We had to wait hours for Stephen to let the delivery guy in for his new TV, the entire court, waiting for him. After consulting other lawyers I learned he has reputation for this behavior.

The only thing he did was take my money. Years after the case I’m getting contacted by him because he screwed something up and now may have to go back into court to finish up what he screwed up in the first place including losing my case. This guy is a joke. Don’t waste your money. If you hire him that’s what’ll happen. Positive reviews I don’t believe and are probably fake.

Haley Burnside took the time to find out what my priorities were and what outcome I was seeking. She gave me realistic expectations but also advocated for me, focusing on my goals and preferred outcome. I would recommend this firm, and Haley specifically, for your divorce case.

I hired this firm in 2017, finalized the divorce in 2018. My ex-husband and I had a primary residence for sale and agreed to split the significant balance of our retirement at the sale of the home rather than a withdrawal at the close of the divorce. The problem was that when the residence sold, three years later, I found my ex-husband had emptied the retirement account two months before the sale. I felt confident that an attorney could get my retirement account back since I had the divorce decree to back it up. I then learned that my Fullenweider Wilhite attorney, Michael Childs, had neglected to include a clause in the decree to prevent this, a decree written by my ex-husband’s attorney, thus allowing my ex-husband to take my retirement funds. You rely on family law attorneys to know these rules and protect you from opposing counsel acts of this nature. Financially devastated and disappointed. I do not recommend this firm.

Divorce is difficult and extremely stressful. You want a lawyer who will tirelessly advocate for her client. Haley Burnside is an extremely qualified, committed family lawyer who fought fearlessly for me during my complicated divorce. She was forthright and honest about the process and the law. She was extremely well-prepared during the hearings and mediation. She was not afraid to push back, but she was also compassionate and sensitive to the how emotionally challenging this was. In short, she went the extra mile always and I was very fortunate to have her in my corner and I would not hesitate to endorse her.

For a full review of my experience with this office visit https://laurafrancolawreview.com/ I hired the Law Office of Laura Franco on September of 2022 to handle my divorce case. In early April of 2023, I terminated their services for grossly mishandling my case. After billing me, $13, 287.50 this office was unable to even achieve a divorce mediation meeting. Throughout this time, they showed me time and time again an irresponsible lack of familiarity with my case, faulty communication, questionable billing practices, and no motivation to move the case forward.

She did it in a very subtle way thinking it was going to be un-noticed. All her information on google about her passion of helping other women are all BS. blah! blah! blah! Just words no actions. I confidently recommend Titiana Frausto to anyone seeking legal council. We worked closely together over a two year period as she represented me throughout a child custody and adoption process. During that time she earned my greatest respect, admiration and confidence. She invests her time and energy and is extremely thorough in her due diligence. Her exceptional strong eye for detail, organization, enthusiasm, and communication skills gain her the upper-hand in the courtroom. Titiana’s dedication and sacrificial giving of her time, energy and expertise has forever changed our lives. Titiana’s knowledge of the law, ability to expose discrepancies and reveal the truth in the courtroom is truly incredible. She has helped change the future of our family. I believe that Titiana's work would, not only meet, but exceed your expectations should you choose her as your attorney.

I expected alot more . My child was seriously burned multiple times. Judge said mediation was required apparently with little or no fight from her. Idk alot of law but if a child is burned on multiple occasions Id expect a little faster hearing or at least an attorney that wont take no for an answer for the safety of children. Had mediation she sat on her cell phone most of the time she interrupted one time to correct a lie my ex told thats about it. We had no planning or game plan for mediation I recieved a phone call the day before. Ive never been in mediation i dont know what to expect, but Her and the mediator while in MY mediation session were disussing other cases and discussing names in front of me. Very unprofessional imo and when i complained about her behavior the First thing i recieved was a bill. I called to say I've only recieved 2 statements the entire 6 months Next thing i recieve is a copy of the orders with the "wrong address". And other added stuff in the orders that may or may not have been taken out she filed a motion to withdraw because I complained about her professionalism (cell phone use while i pay 250hr) to the court and her boss. I received no answers why the judge forced mediation other than the judge didnt wanna hear arguments.

I had a very difficult and unexpected case filed against me and reached out to a family member who referred me to Keith M. Nelson, Esq., Partner at ONDA.  I was nervous and stressed because, although no one ever likes to be in a law suite, life was at an all time high of events and life changes.  Mr Nelson and his team of lawyers were extremely professional and comforting with their knowledge and diligence to protect my interest and legal rights.  His legal team treated me so well throughout the entire process; they helped me to remain calm during this very stressful event.  Mr. Nelson and Paul Hewitt were extremely supportive and provided a beacon of hope when my options appeared limited and the resolution seemed near to impossible to obtain. Me and my husband were concerned about the residual effects of a law suite during this time in our life, but ONDA was able to defend us from an unjust outcome, both Mr. Nelson and Mr Hewitt’s calm and empathetic demeanor offered emotional support to me during this very difficult time. As a woman of faith I believe God placed me in the “Best Hands” He had for me! I am truly grateful for Keith Nelson and Paul Hewitt, they not only provided legal counsel but most important personal care and concern that I needed and will never forget. I would highly recommend Keith M. Nelson and his law firm ONDA to anyone dealing with a family law dispute.  I am thankful to this very fine man, Mr Keith M. Nelson.

Kristina Chung, Attorney. I am so honored and blessed to have this opportunity to share my experience as one of her clients. Ms. Chung not only continuously performs above expectations; she stepped up and committed to the time and complexity that my case was likely to involve when I need the help the most. As a single father, custody cases are extremely difficult especially when CPS was once involved; but Ms. Chung did not let that deter her at all, she took the challenge with a badge of honor. Ms. Chung is an outstanding attorney with the expertise in representing clients in complex Family Law cases. Any client should feel it is a privileged to have Ms. Chung as their attorney. Her integrity, character, compassion, dedication and professionalism is to be envied by others in her field of work. Her knowledge, skills, ability and most of all excellent communication was off the chart. She always displayed personal attention to details and was very responsive to all my emails, texts and phone calls. Ms. Chung makes a client feel like they are her "only" client with the tireless efforts she makes to give them her 100% best. Ms. Chung never let me down and she will NOT disappoint any client that she represents, I am a first hand witness to that. If I could give her 1 million stars instead of (5) I would. There are not many out there that have her skills, expertise and integrity. I highly recommend The Chung Law Firm if you ever find yourself needing an excellent Attorney for any legal services she provides.

She did everything she said she would do, and kept us informed every step of the way. After meeting with a few different attorneys, I met with Genevieve Barr and was not only put at ease, but was more than impressed with Genevieve's approach and direction. I hired her on the spot. My daughter was then taken out of state against my will and within 36 hours, I had three Texas judgments signed and ordered for my daughter to be returned back to me immediately. I cannot explain in words the joy that this brought me as a father. In the time since, we have been preparing for our upcoming court date and I feel that I will be represented in the best manner possible. Genevieve also has an all-star crew that made me feel comfortable, informed, and really put forth a huge effort to make things happen quickly for mine and my daughter's sake. I sincerely appreciate all that they have done for me and my daughter over the last month. If anyone out there is considering a family law attorney - I highly recommend Genevieve Barr and her outstanding staff with Bailey & Galyen.

At the initial consultation, I was comforted by her compassion and seemed to understand my situation. However, after dealing with my husband and his attorney, I realized she was not consulting me about assets; but agreeing with opposing attorney. She never followed through, never prepared me for court, and even suggested that she could refer me to another lawyer if I wanted to pursue by letting the judge stop the illegal actions committed by my husband. I am still having to deal with the fall-out of haphazard actions by her, and her hateful remarks to the affect that she was finished and I was on my own. I would NEVER recommend her to anyone else.

I heard about Mr. Carlock and did my research on him on Super Lawyers as well. I set up a meeting and went to speak with him and the first meeting went very well. I was very impressed with his pitch, what he said he could do and how he could help me get custody back for my kids. When we were preparing for court, I had sent him over 70 messages and exchanges illustrating abuse and harassment from my kid’s father including pictures. When the time came for trial, Mr. Carlock was unprepared and did not use any of the evidence I had sent him while the Father’s attorney used their evidence. This resulted in the father getting more time with the kids over the summer and made me and my case look very weak in front the judge. When I asked him after the case why he didn’t use any of the evidence he said “Oh, I wasn’t aware of it.” While his assistants said that they didn’t think it would matter in court. On top of that, I had a credit for a retainer while he refuses to give me back. Even worse, he is saying I owe him money and that the cost for the transcript of the case is more than is left on the retainer. He is essentially saying that he will not give me the transcript until I pay him even more money. Mr. Carlock is a great salesman, but I urge anyone thinking of using him to do their research and do not buy the snakes oil that he is selling. He uses very inexperienced associates to prepare his cases which puts his clients in poor situations. I regret ever going to him and I am worse off now than I was before I went to Mr. Carlock. He’s a very nice guy, talks a great game but unfortunately the results are left to be desired.

RUDE AND ARROGANT. Just as the last reviewer noted, I also am high level professional and Rita spoke down to me from the moment she began. She hung up on me after she mocked me for not knowing the answer to her question, even after offering what info I did have. I hope someone is able to follow through on a bar complaint, she is the kind of person who gives lawyers a bad name. Shame on you for speaking to those seeking aid as beneath you.

She called me because I was refereed her by a aid service, Im 20 this is my first marriage, so it’s my FIRST divorce ! I called confused and asking for help because I don't know the first thing about getting a divorce, I explained to Ms. Rita M Boyd this was my first time and Im confused on the whole process she proceeds to ask me because I'm so confused “Am I on medication?” what a wonderful thing to ask a grieving WOMEN going through a DIVORCE with a child ! 0/10 wont help if you don't know much about getting a divorce ! STAY AWAY ! Edit: You gave me the aid website I had previously called and I stated that to you ! I didnt pay a consultation fee because YOU called me asking what I needed help with and I told you I needed help with a divorce and you spoke me like I had 0 sense from jump, so I explained to you that I knew nothing about the divorce process, and you said “Might I ask how old you are” because I stated I was confused, You said you would help with the paper work but wont show up to court with me ! Why would you do paper work but not come to court with me for 1,500 ? Before I hung up you asked if I was on medication, and my mom who has waaaay more tolerance than me, hung up on your unprofessional, rude, behind. You have a angry soul and I pray no one goes to you !

Did not show up to court. Lost all our paperwork and emailed copies 3 times. Resending not a big deal but annoying. Communication through out the whole process was horrible. Now we lost the case and it's very hard to over turn. He has promised to return our money in payments. First check was denied by the bank. And now he says I forgot. I have the emails to prove it.

I have been employed all my life since I was out of High School. I have graduated from UH. I never been court before at all so I am the first one to admit my experience in this field is very limited. Understand the laws and I follow them. I suppose it was my fault I let this be known to her right off the bat. My case was not a divorce but a simple child support enforcement/ modification to visitation orders. Her words were No worries I'll see you through this advise all the way beginning to end I've been doing this for years...etc All you have to do is provide me with docs, info, and let me do the rest no need to checkup or worry I'll call you/ email. Worry free limited invested time on my part once I provide with all items bang for the buck. I had already researched a bit in advance had all ready those first 2 days of service. I was a fool. At the end after a year with 3500 of advance she was late unprepared on the 1st court day dressed very casual. I felt uncomfortable bc she did not have her documents with gave excuses. She let go of one of her employees etc. 2nd court casual hand written draft to sign late again. At this point I was calling emailing no response wanted to understand and be advised on what the law expected out of me. No answers no tips no important info to have on hand in the future. Nothing before, after, and during communication provided, I did get charged however for every call, letter, email I had made during the last of last of it. At least they read them. Case is closed had a large bill paid but not forgoten. I am not a professional in this field but professionalism is important no matter where you work. I got more help from the D.A. Office and blogs then her for before and after the case. I held off getting her off the case bc she said it would be worth it. I am glad the D.A has info I need and its free. I suggest mediation/gov. Lawyer before get stuck in the rain with no rainbow in sight.

She charged me monthly legal fees, and had me collecting documents for a year, but did nothing to resolve my divorce. She didn't explain why it was taking so long, and became hostile when I complained about the continued delay. She made several threats to withdraw from my case just days before a scheduled hearing. She had my file 10 months, and was not prepared for the final hearing. Took no initiative to resolve my divorce. Allowed opposing counsel to control the direction of the entire case. With months of doing nothing to finalize my divorce, she caused me to lose a lot of resources with no results. She is neither competent or capable and shows no compassion or integrity.

Ms Bushman holds a law degree and has many years of experience, There is no doubt that when she applied herself she can win for her client. Unfortunately my case seemed to fall through the cracks in her work load. She was very difficult to get a hold of. When Inwould call more often than not I had to speak with one of her assistants who were.not able to help other than taking a message. I appreciate being spread too thin and having too many comittmentd, however I would ask if that's the case are you really serving your clients properly? Ms Bushman at times was very reactive and failed to control her emotions when speaking to me, her paying client. At times she threatened me with withdrawing her services knowing we had important court dates coming up. At times I questioned her commitment to my case given her volunteer work at Food Bank sermed to take priority over returning my calls. She seemed to give up and essentially buckle under the view points of opposing counsel. Essentially sfe talked me in to agreebig to terms that have traumatized my child all in favor of opposing counsel. I agreed to the terms proposed with the hope of allowing the acrimony to settle, this was a huge mistake. As time has passed the opposition haa only become more emboldened and less open to coparenting with me than before. Ms Bushman's relationships with other attorneys seen to hold very little influence exhibited by their reluctance to be open to negotiating wit the terms she would provide in mediation. She ensured that I was always paid up in full so there was no question about her commitment to get paid. I understand she's running a business but bottom line Ms Bushman failed to deliver results on her committmenf to me and my child when we came to her for help. Please be certain to have an easy case because unfortunately Ms Bushman just did not seem to want to engage and fight for her client despite having hard physical evidence of abuse stated by the child regarding the opposition.

Barbara Cole helped me navigate my divorce with a mentally ill co-parent, as well as a child custody battle several years later. Barbara's creative strategies and outside-the-box thinking during the initial divorce put me in a very strong position during the custody battle, which I was able to handle successfully with Barbara's help with the best possible outcome for my child. One of the best things about Barbara is that she balances the beneficial nature of avoiding a nasty courtroom battle with what is ultimately best for both her client, and the child involved during a divorce with children. During the custody battle, my ex hired what I like to call a "macho man lawyer." Barbara knew exactly how to manage him, and did so with ease. Barbara worked very hard to strategize with me in protecting my child the very best way that we could, and the team she recommended be involved in the process has been INVALUABLE to both myself and my child. When she recommends you involve someone in the process, TAKE HER ADVICE. Trust me on this. She is a deep level thinker and is always looking at end game strategy. She is also one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. I cannot thank Barbara enough for her hard work on behalf of myself and my child. I shudder to think what my child would have been exposed to had she not been there every step of the way.

I was working with Karen M Burns from February to April 28, 2020. She has ghosted me and the case, that she sent a demand letter for. I last spoke with her on April 28 and it is July 7th and she has not returned any of my calls (I call weekly) and has not returned any of my 16 emails. I have received no explanation, her receptionists say they just saw her a few days ago, and she's never expressed any doubts in taking the case. We are now hearing back from the opposing party but Miss Burns has ruined the case as she will not communicate.

Hired attorney Karen Burns on October 23,2018. The firm is called Burns Iwuji, PLLC. I was searching for an attorney and found them on, Fathers Rights in Texas website. My mother first spoke with attorney Burns on September 2018, which was I’m assuming the free consultation. My mother met with attorney Iwuji and was charged a consultation fee which was odd because my mother clearly stated she was there to hire them. I did google the firm before we met and at that time they had great reviews. However, both of this attorney will charge for possibly everything they can. Even the air you breath if possible. Attorney Iwuji mentioned that a portal was going to be set up. This was the way of us communicating with the firm and keeping up with charges incurred. The portal was set up a month after we hired them. I never received and invoice from them until June 2019 asking for more money because we had no more funds. First court date was scheduled for Dec; 2018 it was rescheduled. Second court date 2/26/2019, judge gave the mother more time to hire and atty. I was before the judge no more than 5 minutes yet I was charged 2 hrs. Third court date 3/14/2019 we were there maybe 45 minutes I was charged for another 2 hrs. Attorney Burns, constantly wanted to meet to go over our case. Every time we met with her we were charged for 2 hrs. Now, keep in mind we didn’t know about the charges because up until the last time we met we hadn’t received and invoice. I would send atty Burns emails over and over again with no response. If I called the office because she wouldn’t reply and spoke them for like literally 2-3 minutes I was charged $30. I have plenty of proof to show how incompetent this attorney was. Absolutely nothing was accomplished. My daughter is still in an abuse home. I lost money and time form work. I believed and trusted attorney Burns. Now, I truly believe this firm was a RIP off. Unfortunately, I can’t say to do your research before hiring anyone because I did. I lost thousands of dollars and I’ve also lost hope in the justice system. I pray to God every day that he keeps my daughter safe. *We hired them to have a court ordered already in place be modified. (atty made an agreement w/the mother for extended time from March –June 2019) *I have several police reports on mother for not showing up to pick up my daughter. *I have police reports and videos of mother showing up an hour late to drop off or to pick up my daughter. *I have pictures of the physical abuse *Mother was ordered to change last name on my daughter it’s been 3 years and it hasn’t been done yet. *Mother has long history with CPS. *And the list goes on and on. My wife hired this attorney to represent her in a family law case that should have been cut and dry. She talked a good game plan during consultation. She never responded to emails or phone calls for weeks. Unless we threatened to fire her, she would then respond. She showed up 20 minutes late for mediation. She poorly represented her and sided with her ex husband on occasions. I believe she is out for a paycheck with no effort in return for her services. Do not hire this woman to represent you.

Hiring Nicholas Saranto was a terrible decision. I paid him $1,750 as a retainer, trusting he would represent me as agreed. Instead, he did almost nothing to move my case forward. Key filings like the motion to dismiss and countersuit were never submitted, despite his repeated assurances. In the end,I had to draft and file these documents myself—something no paying client should ever have to do. To make matters worse, Mr. Saranto attempted to charge me an additional $1,155 for a plane ticket to attend a service hearing, claiming he would be out of town trick-or-treating with his niece. The hearing date was known since the start of his representation, yet he thought it was acceptable to stick me with this unethical charge. These fees weren’t part of our agreement and felt like a blatant attempt to squeeze me for more money. Finally, just two days before the service hearing, he withdrew as my attorney, abandoning me when I needed representation the most. This was both unprofessional and unethical, especially considering I had paid him for work he never completed. I am furious with how I was treated and feel completely taken advantage of. If you’re considering hiring Mr. Saranto, save yourself the money, stress, and disappointment. Look elsewhere—you deserve better.

Mr. Sarantos does indeed come off as someone that cares and is the right guy. Don't be tricked. I will attest to my personal experience, one that I still am dealing with. 2 weeks ago I consulted. On 10/24 I paid $1000 for just a demand letter for a denied $20k claim against my carrier that I intend to take to small claims. I am new father, a student, fighting cancer, and have a full time job. I got weaseled by my renters insurance on some bs after I had my home invaded and was robbed of almost everything of value. Due to the loss I have had to drop two classes and probably will drop the others to save my gpa because the situation got me very far behind and without any electronics to do online coursework. He knew this and after receiving payment has gone radio silent ***except when I called off my friends number , he answered , asked me if I had given him the loss inventory and some contact info that had already sat in his inbox for 4-5 days. He said he was on it and has gone back to zero communication(no text, email, or phone call back). Taking money with intention of not rendering service or with the intention and delivering this quality of service is just wrong and why I give one star.

I was referred to Mr. Lamorgese to review a potential appeal of a high-conflict and voluminous child custody case. Before the initial consultation, Brad was able to reach out to the attorneys on file and review the case, so the actual time was spent very effectively, not reviewing the case but discussing the possible solutions. All the notes and suggestions received during the consultation were spot on, and of a great assistance. After we found that the cost of representation is out of my price range, Mr. Lamorgese went far and beyond referring me to more affordable yet still superb firms. I highly recommend Mr. Lamorgese as a knowledgeable professional with great attitude towards his clients.

I paid $250 to consult with this attorney. The zoom call lasted 15 minutes when I was assured the appointment would last for an hour. He was very dismissive and told me that I would have no success in my case after skimming my materials. I then asked if he may be able to send me similar cases he worked on that have been publicly posted ( most lawyers do so you can reference their work) and he said he would have to be retained to do this. I did not get a proper consult and he should have refunded the consult fee as it only lasted 15 minutes.

He also tried to charge me $300 to file a written answer as well as force himself on represent me. When I told him I didn’t want him as a lawyer he kicked me out without helping me at all. This will be a detailed review so if you need a short one, do not hire Holly to represent you. If I had not checked and had my attorney partner to proof read, she would have ruined my finances and given one of my cars to my ex-wife. My attorney partner and her attorney father were appalled at what I went through here. I ended up correcting the entire petition myself with the help of my partner after I was still finding material (not just grammatical) errors after the 5th version. First: Mishandling of material information The most severe failure here was—despite me having provided material information twice, the second time in writing and organized so it was copy and paste-able—Holly still made severe errors. She assigned one of my brokerage accounts to my ex-wife that belonged to me. She put one of my cars’ VIN numbers as the VIN number for my ex wife’s car I was giving her. She wrote the same account number twice but as if it was different account types. Had this gone to court, it would have financially harmful or caused more delays and costs having to get it corrected. It was an agreed divorce and this could have caused my ex-wife to think I was trying to pull something over on her, which would have ruined the delicate peace we have. I had to ask Holly 5-6 times to correct something else each time I reviewed another draft. I finally just ended up doing the key points myself, which defeats the purpose of paying someone two thousand dollars to do it. It took about 6 editions ultimately to get an acceptable decree because there were so many mistakes made inputting the very clear information I provided to Holly. Secondly: Failure to protect non public information. In the first draft of the final decree, Holly had left in information of her other clients in it instead of mine. This included their phone number, address, employer name and address, and partial social security number and drivers license number. There are laws about attorneys needing to protect and secure such information. Now I will worry forever about Holly doing the same to me with my information. Third: Grammatical Errors. Holly makes regular grammatical errors even in what was intended to be a final draft sent to a judge. From spelling my name as Wants, to putting my child’s initials as EAM when it’s AEW, missing periods, punctuation marks, missing or misspelled words. This is all in the first draft of the final decree she mailed me and was in the some 5th draft she wrote before I decided to correct it myself. Lastly, When it came time to file Holly said we could e-sign the decree, it was filed and rejected because it was e-signed. Holly ranted and raved rather unprofessionally about the Judge. This cost me another $40 in printing and more hours wasted syncing up with my ex-wife an hour away in Fort Worth to get it signed. For an attorney who claims to do all this electronically I’m surprised by her claims she didn’t know. I got her the signed paperwork two days later, and had to send three emails following up nearly a week afterwards to get her to confirm it was filed. Then another email a week later for her to bother uploading the signed decree. I had paid Holly her fees in full as she does flat rate before we started on the decree (which is reasonable of her I might add) however had I not already paid in full, I would have fired her and hired another attorney. I didn’t only because I had already paid in full and it wasn’t until then all the severe stuff came up.

Holly worked with me on modifying my divorce settlement. She was very professional. Holly did a very good job of keeping me informed and was very easy to communicate with. She was tough, but fair and got everything resolved quickly. I would highly recommend Holly Schymik.

Holly worked with me on a particularly difficult litigation with my ex-husband. By the time we got to trial, Holly knew my case even better than I did. She was thorough and relentless in trying to resolve issues outside of court. Unlike with other lawyers I've used, I never felt that Holly suggested a course of action just to increase her billable hours. In fact, she did just the opposite and refused to engage in letter wars instigated by opposing counsel. I highly recommend her as a family lawyer and, in fact, have.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
