I had the opportunity to hire Jeff and work with him for several years. Before I hired him I talked to a number of attorneys about my case. I chose to work with Jeff, because I respected the way he handled himself at our first meeting. Through the three years I worked with him I could tell he had a good understanding of both the law and the court system. He worked hard to get the best outcome for me in my cases. Also, he was good at keeping me informed on all of my options throughout the whole process. I would be happy to work with him again.

I recently went through a very difficult time and hired Robert Ruth to handle my case. He did an incredible job with everything and continued to give me peace of mind throughout the entire process. He made it VERY easy to discuss my case and never made me feel like I was less of a person because of my actions. I would absolutely highly recommend him to anyone who is in need of a great lawyer.

Rob Ruth provided a well constructed defense for my husband. He was thorough, knowledgeable, concise, and never failed to provide us with quick communication and focused attention. Rob's attention to the details of our case and willingness to familiarize himself with my husband's character gave us a great amount of peace of mind. On the days we were in court, Rob showed himself to be fully competent and confident when speaking with others, including the prosecutor and the judge. We were always kept aware of communications involving our case and Rob also spoke to both of us, with my husband's permission, before filing motions. His ability to work with and for us meant that we received justice in the truest sense of the word.

I was very happy with Dave when he represented me in court for my BUI charge. Dave was responsive, attentive, and navigated a case that wasn't very straight forward as it relates to the law. The only area for improvement would have been the knowledge base around BUI laws specifically in Multnomah County, but I'm not sure many lawyers would have that.

Absent other evidence, I am led to believe this lawyer is not willing to represent defendants of color. I called asking for a consultation surrounding a charge stemming from a protest. Before I was able to get more than 15 seconds into the description, I was asked why I was bothering their firm with this and hung up on. With limited information gathered, I am left to believe my dialect and voice were the cause of this reaction and, given my skin color, I am inclined to believe this was the basis of their reaction. It’s incredibly disappointing to be treated in this manner in 2021.

After a lot of research and consultations with criminal defense attorneys in the area, I chose to work with Corey and his team, and I couldn’t have picked a better attorney to represent me for my criminal charges. Both charges were dismissed before trial - thanks to the help of Corey and his team. Everyone was very professional, responsive, and diligent in all regards throughout my case. Corey and his team took great care to walk me through everything step-by-step. Corey gave me valuable legal advice on what to expect, what options I had, what the likely outcomes could be, and then he achieved the best outcome possible. I am extremely pleased with my experience, especially during such a stressful time for me. I would hire him again in a heartbeat. Corey is an experienced, respected attorney, and I do not hesitate to recommend him and the his team to anyone in need - you’ll be in excellent hands.

I wasn't sure if I should hire an attorney because the reviews I read said it wasn't worth it because they usually find you guilty. But I thought if there was any chance it would have to be thru an attorney. I called Atty. Rifelj and explained my situation. I had a BAC of .18 and facing ILD interlock device for a year. This is automatic if you are over .15. Nicholas was compassionate, discreet and said he would handle everything. I did not even have to go to court. So for a flat fee he did just that. He got my fine reduced and got me out of the ILD . I would definitely recommend you contact Nicholas if you are in need of an attorney. He did a great job for me.

My GF had a good OWI case with promising evidence of getting the case dropped. She went ahead with Nicholas because he had a flat fee and she was on a budget. Nicholas did all the paper work and represented her in the Municipal court. He stated that he will put the officer on the spot in the Circuit court because we lost the municipal court. As a lawyer, shouldn't you be fighting for your client in all courts? Isn't that your job? I was so confused as to why he needed to wait. Then he filed for an appeal to the Circuit court and didn't even send the appeal in certify mail. The city attorney said they never received it. The judge ruled with the city attorney and she could no longer appeal the case. So now, she is stuck with a loss of $2600, and a OWI on her record. She could have gotten the same result by just going to court and plea no contest and saved her self $2600. Throughout the case, this lawyer just made it feel like he didn't care what happens to his client. I would recommend staying away from this lawyer if you can. It seems he just wants your money and doesn't care what happens.

I was cited for and OWI 2nd and battery to a law enforcement officer in 2022 . A couple months later was cited for and OWI 3rd. Jason helped me a lot through every aspect of hearings, arraignments, options I had, and what the prosecutor was likely going to present. He asked me for all paperwork necessary through my treatment to present to the judge to help with my case. All details considered in my case, I was given minimal time on the bracelet and all other charges dropped. I would recommend Jason for any criminal charge because he is very thorough when explaining things, and answers any questions you may ask in depth. I felt I had someone on my side throughout my experience that truly wanted the best outcome for me.

I was working with a horrible attorney who did absolutely nothing for my case. I was facing jail time up to a year. I fired my old attorney and hired Kim about 1-2 months before my case was set to go to trail. After hiring Kim she was able to get the judge to reschedule my trail dates . But trail was not required as Kim was able to get my criminal charges reduced to a Civil ticket. I will be using her services again and again!

Kim Zion was very knowledgeable, yet I had a very difficult time with her. I felt if I wasn't calling everyday nothing would get done. I had to constantly remind her of important information, resend photographs and had to make suggestions. I felt very stuck. She could never remember anything and felt as though she didn't take my case seriously, though it was a very serious case. I would call and not hear from her for weeks, which was not appreciated. she shouldn't have taken my case if she could not keep up with her work load. In the end I am glad we had an attorney, but I felt with a different lawyer everything would have been better communicated and the process would have gone faster.

He is not organized and his office isn't organized either, and he doesn't have a secretary to make copies or invoices for you... I had to file 3 or 4 complaints with the State Bar of Wisconsin in order to get him moving with a appeal case which he missed the deadline date for that... and with the lawsuit that he hasn't started like he said he would!? He wouldn't text me or return phone calls unless you file with the State Bar of Wisconsin.. I got the impression from him he was always worrying about his reputation not for his clients...

Career criminal who assaulted my disabled sister, and prior to her, assaulted another disabled person, was released on bond by Free the 350. Although we were on a notification list, we "slipped through the cracks" and were NEVER notified. The victim's advocate replied "sorry". There was no accountability or explanation. We could not have direct contact with the DA (but the criminal could have direct access to his defender). We had to go through the victim's advocate on all communication. This system of injustice benefits the offender, not the victim. Next time, this villain will kill someone.

This woman failed my children miserably. When she actually showed up to meetings on time, she was unkempt and full of cat fur. She ended up granting joint custody of young children to a known and proven abusive parent. She even ENCOURAGED the parent to ask for more custody time with the children than the parent even wanted. That's what killed me the most. It's an absolute shame what this lawyer did, and now my children continue to pay every single time they have forced custody time with this abusive parent. What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
