Jennifer is the most ethical person I've ever worked with in any type of business transaction. She helped me complete a divorce and dealing with an difficult ex. She was able to mediate and break through to my ex where all else had failed before. A very good person and attorney. I don't recommend many people and am highly critical as a person. I have only good things to say about Jennifer.

Celeste Johansson is an exceptional Family Law attorney! We all know that divorce, custody and child support matters are difficult and can take an emotional toll whether a case is fairly simple or more complex. Celeste helped me navigate through the end of an extremely long and complex case. She is smart, savvy and is extremely knowledgeable in the intricacies of family law. She helped me to evaluate my situation, gave me her recommendations, and helped me to disentangle from what had been an ugly case and to reach a settlement when this had previously seemed impossible. My children and I are finally able to move on after a hard road. Celeste is compassionate on top of being a great attorney. She is incredibly responsive and professional and gets results. I cannot recommend her highly enough!

I have had the opportunity to study Business Law Today with Professor Cary Phu Pham, who is also a lawyer, during the past Spring 2015 Semester. He is really a very knowledgeable professor who had guided our class to go through the whole semester with interesting subjects that are very useful for our daily lives even though we don't practice law. The knowledge we gathered from Professor Phu helps enhance our knowledge that we can carry out when it comes to applying to the cases relevant to our interests.

Did an excellent job for me in my divorce proceedings, listened carefully to what I wanted and put together a very non-traditional contract. Followed through afterwards, protecting my rights and ensuring that I was not being taken advantage of in a situation that ensued post divorce. I was grateful for his professional expertise.

I was referred to Cara by my foster son's attorney and she represented me in his dependency case. I can't say enough about her. She's super impressive and efficient! She is very responsive and gave me the play by play via text while in court. She was able to move my case forward from termination of services, to termination of parental rights, and towards adoption which I hope will happen by spring. She is no-nonsense type person and has good relationships with the attorneys on the dependency floor in Santa Ana. She is literally in those court rooms every day and is familiar with each judge as well. I'm so glad I didn't bring an outsider in. She works on a single, very reasonable retainer to take families all the way to adoption so you don't have to deal with expenses getting out of hand.

David St.Peter is Best Family Attorney! I don't usually write reviews but I am so grateful to attorney David A. St.Peter for helping me through a very difficult divorce. I switched lawyers last minute before my spousal support hearing. David returned all my calls and e-mails the same day (which my other lawyer didn't) helping me feel comfortable. In court, David was always prepared and quick to the point. He was relentless, always on his game and left nothing to chance. After my ex cried that this was unfair because my attorney was so much more experienced, the Judge had to agree that "attorney David St. Peter was doing a great job" Wow! I hired the right guy because not only did the Judge say he was good, David also helped me win a monthly spousal support I thought was only reachable in my dreams!! My divorce was stressful, but David helped me feel confident, protected and more than a paycheck. God Bless you David! I'm so glad my friends recommended him to me.

I hired Mr. Dedecker for a dependency court case and the odds were really stacked against me. He fought really hard and secured my innocence despite the county counsel being against me. He took my case and he was optimistic about it from the start. He really cares and it shows. First he was incredibly knowledgeable. From the first conversation I had with him until the last he was able to successfully explain to me the process of my legal problem and what he was going to do to help me. He was very responsive to all my calls and questions and enthusiastic each time I spoke with him. I was shocked that he answered his phone on a weekend and was willing to talk to me! I definitely needed a lot of support during my difficult time and he was able to put me at ease. If you want an attorney that cares to listen to your concerns and helps you understand the system. I would recommend you hire Mr. Dedecker. If you find yourself or your family faced with allegations by social services, YOU MUST HIRE A GOOD ATTORNEY! Do not make the mistake of thinking that just because you are innocent things will “sort itself out”. I would whole heartily recommend Mr. Dedecker to anyone facing a dependency case involving a minor. He was an integral part in helping us get my son back and my wife. We will always be forever grateful. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Mr. Dedecker

After seeking paternal rights in three counties for two and a half years and two lousy lawyers I finally found Susan Witting. Susan and her great Paralegal Cindy went to work and did a excellent job preparing for court. Susan did an amazing job each time we went to court and kept me informed throughout the process. With Susan's help I finally have the shared legal and physical custody I have been seeking. Susan also got the court ordered therapy necessary to help our children heal the wounds caused by separation and divorce. I highly recommend Susan to anyone seeking help with Family Law issues.

Eric S. Schneider professionally guided me through the challenging, emotional, and difficult process of my temporary restraining order and child custody case. Eric kept me clear and focused on the facts and guided me to make decisions based on those facts and what is best for my children. Eric is a very fast thinker and was able to immediately stop several nonsensical requests during the process saving everyone time and costs. Eric’s tactical skills were matched by administrative and organizational ability. Everything Eric does is truly in the best interest of who he represents. It’s reassuring when he is able to put the opposing counsel in their place because he is better prepared and won’t let them fabricate and speak without legal facts. Eric rescued me from narcissistic ex and got me through the worst time of my life. He is exceptionally knowledgeable, highly respected by his peers, extremely personable and caring attorney. I will never forget how he has helped me and my family. In conclusion, I highly recommend Eric Schneider.

Mrs. Forgo is a highly knowledgeable and qualified attorney in child support issues. As a staff attorney for the County of Los Angeles, Department of Child Support Services and a Supervising attorney for the County of San Bernardino, Child Support Service, she has direct work experience of internal policies and procedures, as well as professional interactions with the presiding judges. She was able to meet with me promptly to review my child support case. She explained to me with expert detail the summons, the documentation requested of me and the other party, the court proceeding, the demeanor of the judges and the options provided by the County. She walked me through each step to ensure my level of understanding was through. I would highly recommend Mrs. Forgo or anyone of her associates.

I can't thank Mr. Evans enough for his guidance, direction and legal support on my divorce case, specifically spousal support and attorneys fees that were being requested of me. Mr. Evans was very determined in his strategy, secured my feedback, understanding and approval, then actioned it accordingly. Case went to trial and we were victorious on both items. Quick on his feet, found several discrepancies in court, during trial on respondent's paperwork; presented/argued our case and judge ruled completely in our favor. What a fantastic outcome. Thank you Mr. Evans, for everything.

Nancy always answered my questions for me on the spot, proving her vast knowledge in family law. My case was very unique in many ways, but was no problem for Nancy to get me through basically achieving everything that I was due in my divorce. She was very patient and workable throughout the whole case. When we were faced with a long trial or a quicker resolution she could have pushed or made the case go into a very expensive long trial situation and she proved that was not her intentions.

My husband needed an attorney and I hired one who said he would help but he literally took my money and ran. Then Joel Carash and his team were hired to help my husband. Joel was the most amazing guy ever, not only did he put his heart and soul into helping my husband he helped me. Mr. Carash went above and beyond in my eyes. I am more than grateful for EVERYTHING that he has done. Mr.Carash saved my husband and by doing that he saved my daughter and I. I can't thank him enough for all he has done. My husband and I both think the world of him. I would highly recommend him to anyone and everyone who is looking for an attorney who doesn't mess around and who puts more than 100% into his cases. The Carash Law Office is by far the BEST around!! There staff are all on top of everything, friendly and non judgemental. I am so grateful for everything, from the many emails week or weekend day or night to phone calls and sit down meetings. I NEVER had to ask anything twice he always listened to what I said the first time. They not only won the case for me but they made sure that it was a fair outcome. I consider them a very family friendly office, I never felt nervous or threatened when calling or visiting. Mr. Carash always kept me up to date on everything that was going on. Joel Carash I just thank you so much from the bottom of my heart, you are truly an amazing guy.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
