The best attorney I had in my divorce case. Jesus has been very responsive, with a focus on finding solutions and resolving disputes without extensive court time or excessive fees for unneeded motions and hearings. I have already recommended me to friends who are happy with his services (I found him through a friend, his former client, also very happy with his work and rightly so).

Rather like most people who go and see Renee, it was not a fun time in my life. Renee made a difference. She gave great advice, she knew the right blend of aggression and amelioration and, something that is very important to me, she is honest. Renee knows the law, but she also knows how and when to use it. She made decisions that were based on what was right for me, not just what would generate fees (sadly, that's rare). Pick Renee and it will be a great first step in putting your life back together.

I am 100% satisfied with the representation I have received from Don and his team. Don is organized, detailed and dedicated. I trust him completely. Don has integrity. I have witnessed attorneys who play dirty and Don is not one of them. He presents the facts, he knows the law and handles himself with dignity. We have gone to court twice and both times the outcome has been favorable to our side, Without a doubt, I have retained the best legal team around. Thank you for going above and beyond and working so hard for ME.

It was my pleasure to be represented by Brett & Heidi. Initially dealt mainly with Brett where I got my child back after a Fake DV order was filed and granted against me with weak evidence. After we finished the first hearing I got 50% custody of my child, and Heidi took over from Brett at that point. The other party does not follow our court order, and constantly lives in a where double standards is okay. Heidi is efficient in her wording to detail and highlight the issues in writing to opposing counsel, letting them know how their client is violating the court orders. Everything is properly documented with evidence of communication. Heidi is busy, I can imagine that when you're amazing at what you do you'll be in demand but she typically gets back the same day or next. I can't recommend Heidi enough, she is professional, swift, and gets the job done.

I was blown away from the moment I met Cindy and her Brother (partner) Heber. They were both very helpful and clearly passionate about their work. I saw it as a huge positive and unique bonus to have a brother and sister team working on my behalf . I continue to work directly with Cindy on my situation and she has been heaven sent. She is highly knowledgeable and up to date with any recent changes to laws or documents. (I had a previous veteran attorney who didnt "keep up with the times"). She is extremely enthusiastic and definitely cares about establishing a strong reputation for having integrity. I have been completely pleased with that diligence and attention to detail. I have recommended Moran and Moran to friends and they have had a similar experience and positive results. Thank you again Moran and Moran

I know Jennifer Hemmer from her charity work and community leadership on behalf of the Sacramento Sports Commission, Sacramento Ballet Board, youth basketball coach, and other support of arts, culture, and sports in Sacramento. She's an absolutely stellar person, one I admire greatly. I've consulted with her on my family's legal affairs, and referred her to several friends over the years going through difficult family transitions. My experience and those of my friends is that she's handled our concerns with sound advice, sensitivity, and a cost-effective process using negotiated settlements as much as possible.

As a victim of fraudulent Marriage, I was desperately looking for a trustworthy family lawyer to get me out of this mess. After consulting couple of other lawyers, Luisa was recommended to me by another well known immigration attorney Helen Tarokic. Luisa was very thorough with all the required documents and information needed for a successful representation. She made sure there were no loose ends on our side and also had a back up plan ready just in case of an undesirable result. Even during the Covid crisis and huge back log of cases, I was lucky enough to get a court date last week. Luisa briefed me thoroughly 30 mins before hearing and we were able to get a favorable decision from the Judge. Thank you Luisa!!

Going through a complicated and scary divorce is not an easy process. My situation was incredibly complex and difficult. I was referred to ADZ through several sources and when I met Tulin I knew I had an advocate along with the protection and guidance needed to make it through what turned out to be almost 2-years of litigation. Her strength and expertise got me through. Her staff is top notch and equally as caring. My case was a personal one, not at a corporate level. There were not millions at stake, yet I was treated as a top tier client. I realize there are a lot of lawyers to choose from. If you want someone who is willing to fight for you — to educate you — to help you gain freedom from years of verbal and emotional abuse, Tulin is the one you will want by your side. I highly recommend Tulin and ADZ when it matters.

Jean is not only super knowledgeable about the infinite avenues/detours of family law; Jean makes it a priority to know the facts and details of your situation like she knows the law. Why is this important? In real-time, court has so many unexpected moments; but with an attorney like Jean...It didn't matter because she was ready to activate and SHE DID! Thank you Jean and thanks to the Fernandez and Karney team for recruiting such an amazing team.

An attorney who truly cares about his clients? It is so rare, in my opinion, it almost sounds like an oxymoron. Well I almost never write reviews and I'm so positively impressed with George, I had to write this and attest that he is a rare, amazing, caring, compassionate human being as well as an extremely skilled and competent attorney. I speak from experience as I worked for 12 years as a contract employee for Family Court Services, so observed many attorneys, judges and mediators. I also am a peaceful person, as you may be, having ended a prior 23 year with a respectful mediated settlement never having to appear in court. Currently, I'm a survivor of 38 month, extremely high conflict, unnecessarily vicious divorce battle that cost $90K prior to George. George was my fourth attorney and George went way above and beyond for a very reasonable pre-set flat fee. Words cannot express how happy and relieved I am that I found George who was able to resolve the case quickly by mediation a long overdue agreement and thereby avoiding a scheduled two day trial that I was dreading. In summary, my only regret that I didn't find George Castagnola three years sooner so that he could have been my first and only attorney. If I were a teacher, I would rate him A++. There is no higher rating.

Linda and David represented me in my divorce and my only regret is that I didn't go to them sooner. After spending almost a year and thousands of dollars in legal fees with another attorney (who was highly rated), I switched to their office. Linda is very thorough, organized and efficient. She never asked me something twice and took great notes. She responded quickly on time sensitive issues. When we were nearing our settlement conference date, she worked some long evening hours to get things ready. Their office billed fairly and ethically and never nickel and dimed me. Linda was always aware that I was conscious of my costs and recommended things worth pursuing and those that were not. She and David got me a good fair settlement without trial and most importantly, helped close it relatively quickly, after my divorce had dragged on for a year and a half before I switched to them. I hope no one has to go through a divorce, but if you do, you need someone like Linda working for you.

I have referred clients to Jason and can recommend him to anyone needing expert divorce representation.

Beyond brilliant. He was hands-on, considerate, and meticulous. Bruce is an excellent communicator who didn’t miss a detail. This was such an asset both when communicating with him directly, and in his persuasive, impeccable communication with my ex-husband’s team. He displayed a strong sense of fairness, and had a very impressive way of keeping things moving forward at all times. He made me feel very looked after. He was firm and protective in his approach, but never in a way that felt aggressive or slowed things down. I’m kind of kidding, but he almost makes you want to get divorced again.

Dan is a great family law attorney. Why? he's calm. Keeps it simple. Doesn't chase wild geese, and politely stops you if you want a wild goose chase. He's an excellent writer. I get impatient sometimes when he is re-writing things, but the end result is SO worth it. Wonderful guy, really cares. April 29, 2015 I cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for Brett Johnston, Esq. Before I was referred to Brett, I had the unfortunate experiences of three other family law attorneys. They took thousands of dollars in fees, but literally did nothing to move my case forward. I was discouraged and scared. My former spouse is an attorney and was using all the tools at his disposal to ruin me financially. I had no more money, my credit was destroyed and I had about given up any hope of a fair settlement. When I explained my situation to Brett, he was incensed. He told me he would help me and he did. Finally I had a true advocate. He took charge, moved the case forward and has helped me recoup some of the funds taken from me. Brett has always been responsive and pleasant. During our time working together he became certified in family law. When he talks, other attorneys and judges listen. He is very good at what he does. Having to spend time in the family courts is a nightmare for anyone. If you are fortunate to have Brett on your side, your nightmare might be only a short, bad dream. Victoria

My case was complicated to say the least. My charges were numerous, and were heard in three different court rooms. Steven had his hands full dealing with different prosecutors, judges, and my mom, who by the way is also a hand full. There were deals offered that seamed appealing to me at the time, all things considered, and would undoubtedly relieve my attorney of mountains of motions to file, and court appearances in three cities. The easy road would have been the one most traveled by most attorneys in his shoes. But the longer harder road payed off, and I ended up home with my family much sooner than anyone had imagined, and much sooner than the prosecutors were intending. Steven Valerio is a very hard working, honest, dedicated lawyer, who would rather work more, and for the same pay, to get his clients the absolute very best representation possible, than work less, for the same pay, and just do nothing more than what he is obligated to. Which is very often the case with hired representation, who can rase the fee as the work load gets heavier. It wasn't just the money I saved, it was my life. He will fight for your freedom, and he will give you piece of mind knowing you have an attorney you can trust and rely on. Thanks again Steve.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
