I have had a few occassions that I needed a lawyer to handle some divorce situations and Julie is is one of the, if not THE, best I have ever encountered! She advises, counsels, and stands up for her clients with everything she is made of--there is no plowing this woman down! The best thing is that I have sent numerous friends--men and women--and she has represented both sides fairly and vehemently, regardless of their "side" of the divorce. Be honest with her, bring ALL your documentation (even if you think it might be a silly thing, bring it) and share EVERYTHING with her--the more she knows the better she can advise you! Once I became her client there was nothing any other lawyer could try to send me that would make me nervous, she handled all the letters (communication), affidavits, documents, court dates (sometimes I had to go, sometimes not) and did not worry at all. One time I had an ex throw me the proverbial "curve ball" in court, but when Julie finished with them we were more than victorious!!! Nothing ruffles this ladies' feathers, you can't make her blink, and cannot surprise her, she has seen it all! I love her and will send people her way until she retires!!!

After a long a bitter 2 years custody dispute, 2 previous attorneys, multiple false allegations of child abuse, supervised visitation and hope lost. Bill stepped in 3 months before a 2 day jury trial and was able to gain me as the father, primary custody of my 3 year old daughter, Bill is absolutely a superior and methodical tactician of family law. He was unwavering in our pursuit to right the wrong that had befallen my child and myself through the court system. My child now has both her parents in her life, father as primary, and everything is going well.

Jack Jamison acted as an expert witness on legal issues in a very complex matter for my company. The company attorney, a long time attorney, honors graduate of one of the top law schools in the nation and former partner at a major, world wide law firm, had never met Mr. Jamison before Jamison was recommended by another attorney. My attorney stated that Jack Jamison was one of the most knowledgeable attorneys he had ever met, grasped the issues unbelievably well, and gave advice that led to the fantastic result my company had in the case. He was quick with his response to complex questions and knew the law, facts of the case, issues, and recommended strategy in the case like no other attorney he had ever met. Based upon my experiences with Jack Jamison in my company's case, he is one of the top attorneys in Dallas and the state and should have nothing less than a 10 rating.

I was off to a very ruff start with several big name law firms, and after squandering enough my money I could've purchased a small giraffe calf from northern Africa. I found myself fighting an uphill battle as father wanting primary custody of my 2 year old daughter. A friend referred The Law Office of La'Donna Harlan to me twice, This is where the MAGIC began to happen for me. Attorney Harlan took my case on short notice, we filed for an extension with my court date and prepared for battle. I was in complete disbelief the way she ascended and floated through the court room with a sense of calm and focus. She had accomplished in 2.5 hours in court, what I had had dreamed every night for the past 2 years.

Bruce is a genuinely good man. Most attorneys of the attorneys I've encountered have a very fluid code of ethics, but Bruce is different. He has always given me good advice and as long as he has worked with me, I have grown to truly respect him. I can count on him. My divorce has been very ugly, lengthy and expensive, but Bruce has been like a rock. If you meet him ask him about his jaguar speech on your first visit and that will tell all you really need to know about this man and his experience. I feel Bruce needs to be more aggressive sometimes, but I have learned to trust his experience more than my intuition. His paralegal Shelley is equally outstanding. I am honored to give him my highest recommendation.

I was recently going through a custody and divorce situation and since my ex husband beat me to hiring an attorney I was served right away and had a short time span to hire representation . I spoke with many attorneys and consulted with a few but none of them came slightly close to Elaine . I immediately fell in love with her passion and energy after I conversed with her over the phone. After meeting with her I knew she was who I had been praying for. She's beyond experienced with family law! We had our court date today and besides being time efficient she exceeded all of my expectations as a lawyer! She's definitely someone you want to have on your side representing you ! Compassionate with her clients but at the same time being firm and aggressive to fight for the best interest of your child ! Elaine is my angel God sent me without a doubt !

Working with this law firm has been the biggest blessing a girl could ask for! Mr. Praeger is highly intelligent, knows family law and fought hard for this client. He was tough on me so that I would toughen up and realize that I needed to stand up for myself and fight for myself and my kids. I cannot say enough good things about his integrity, work ethic and the dedication that he put into my case. Ms. Deb’s time and effort in coordinating my case did not go unnoticed, either! If you put in the work and give her the necessary tools to coordinate your case, she does so at the top level. She kept the lines of communication open at all times and was very responsive. She was kind, supportive and the shoulder I needed when times were tough. She did not let me give up and encouraged me to fight hard! Mr. Praeger and Ms. Deb made the most stressful, emotional, and mentally tough times in my life a lot easier to manage. Having them in my corner gave me the best feeling of security and when all was said and done, a sigh of relief and a great outlook moving forward. Thank you so very much for all your hard work, Mr. Praeger and Ms. Deb, I am truly grateful!

I have heard other attorneys describe her as a homerun hitter. She ia respected by her peers and clients alike. I was appointed her client back in June of 2018. I was on the run at the time and had no real address. I want to a hospital about I think 2 hours from her office and only a few people knew I was there seeking help and she drove out to see me. She found me and travelled all that way to let me know what was happening with my family and my options. I knew than she was one of a kind. I ended up getting arrested and again she found me and came to visit me in jail to update me again. Afterwards she contacted my other attorney and notified her I was there saving me weeks of wasted time waiting for the court to inform my other attorney. She saved me again. She has since the beginning kept me up to date on everything happening in my case and given me realistic outcomes. She has not once advised me to do something that I regretted later on. I knew for certain she was an incredible attorney when after we left the courtroom the first time we appeared other attorneys came up to tell me I had an great attorney. She is well respected because she knows her job and she is fair. She sees you as a person and not just a mistake or piece of paper. She protects you as an attorney should and she doesn't shy away from a fight. In fact I've seen it fuel her and she is a force to be reckoned with because she knows her laws, and statutes and I have yet to see her caught by surprise by another attorney. She was court appointed but I would pay to use her again. I know that she fought to get me the best outcome possible and I'm not sure any other attorney could do any better. I trust her because she deserves it and I know she prepares in advance for every possible scenario. I don't plan on needing her in the future but if I ever find myself in need of an attorney again I will choose Miss Erin Melsheimer. Mine was a family court cps case but I wish I would of had her defending me on my past criminal cases. They would of certainly turned out different. I paid close to 10 grand 5 years ago for a private attorney and he was great I rank her right up there in at least the value range. How does one determine the value of peace of mind knowing that someone is fighting for you when you can't do it yourself. Before becoming her client I had lost all belief in the justice system. I didn't believe truth would win and that the justice system players followed any rules of conduct. She alone has made me see that some attorneys still work by a code and within the laws. She alone has shown me that their are laws and statues that protect the accused and that justice can still be found even if in small victories. I thank God for her being appointed my attorney and for her renewing my faith in law and order. I can not stop singing her praises. You won't be disappointed either. As I said I may not get all I want at the end of the case but I know that she gave it 100 every step of the way and that she got me the best outcome possible. I know she fought her hardest and smartest for me. When you are standing alone being accused, slandered, and at your most vulnerable with everyone taking aim at you, she is the one you want standing in front of you deflecting those fiery darts.

I live in Ga. My ex and I have a daughter. I had recently filed for child support in the state of Florida where he resides because Ga told me child support is filed where the father lives. So he received a letter from the Florida Child support department advising a case had been initiated. The next thing i knew i was being served from the state of Texas for child support from him. Apparently, the child support obligation is wayyy lower in Texas than in Florida and he was trying to get away with paying less child support. I was referred to Kathy from Kinser & Bates from a lawyer in Atlanta and was told to call her immediately. Before Kathy even took my case, she reached out to his lawyer informing him of what was going on and advised he needed to get his client to withdraw his petition. My ex stood firm so i had to retain Kathy and her firm to represent me from Atlanta. Jon was not the leading attorney on my case but he along with the rest of the firm were there to answer my many emails and calls. Both firms went back and forth negotiating and my ex's attorney realized this was a losing case for him as we had found out that my ex obtained a Texas driver's license using a relative's address and he had only been a Texas resident for a few days when his petition was filed. According to Texas, you have to be living in Texas for 6 months and have a license for 90 days before you can submit a petition. The whole process took about 6 months before the case was dismissed with prejudice agreed by both attorneys and signed off on by the court. So my case did not have to go before a judge. It took so long because my ex was stalling. My ex also had to pay my attorney fees as part of the settlement. Kathy, Jon and their team were very professional, and experts at their jobs. Jon provided great advice regarding the situation. They are the first firm I had to work with and have set the bar very high in what I should be expecting from law firms. You get what you pay for. Kinser & Bates has been doing this a long time and I could tell from the consultation call that Kathy, Jon and the firm would have my back, and me and my daughter's best interest at mind. I don't know what i would have done without them.

Marcus is a lucky guy. He gets to have his fathers 44 years experience and wisdom in best way to handle a case. Marcus is a class act who tells the truth and gets after any work in front of him. He drove all the way to montgomery county by Austin to negotiate and save me $20,000 from the original fine. I paid $2K and was on my way. He understands business and has more diversified approach than his father. If you are struggling financially and have a criminal case that could sit you down for a long while call on jr. He's only been practicing for one year but he has secretary's who have been in the business over 20+ years. So he isn't some young lawyer all by himself in some executive suite. No sir, he has a whole arsenal of weapons to use with the firms 44 years in business. Most of the time I would never do something with a rookie attorney. But here you get the best deal. Save money on the fees because he's new. But get the experience you would pay much for using his father Robert M. Cady senior. I believe you will have the full force of the firm to make sure that junior is a winner. That's how I felt when he settled my case. Dressed to the 9's in 3 piece suit. Robert senior shows up to court in hunting gear. Somehow he gets away with it and comes away a winner for his clients. So I don't care what they wear. Sweat pants and khaki safari shirts work for me as long as we win. Bottom line there are a lot of attorney's that really suck. Marcus sucks much less than the other guys. Give him a call. Don't use a court appointed attorney. This is your life.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
