Extremely rude and unprofessional receptionist in attempting to access documents with a prior closing at this location. No attempt to even get our case number and legitimately laughed at my question over the phone. Beyond unhelpful and will not be using this firm for future closings.

Matt doesn't come across like most lawyers I have met. From the beginning of my legal needs, he takes his time with the details and really gets to know every aspect of a case. He asks questions clearly so he understands and it's almost like he puts himself in your own shoes. He is very much a straight shooter, which I appreciate. Matt is a professional, but he is also a person that you'll feel is a friend. When you choose him, you choose more than legal counsel; you choose a real advocate you can keep coming to. Thank you Matt for all your hard work, and for helping me through one of the most difficult times of my life. You made the transition easier and allowed me to focus on more important things.

Mr. Michaud was a huge help during my divorce. He took the time to explain the process to me, and was very patient and professional when I was under a lot of stress. I almost lost everything I had, but I found him online and he saved me. I could not ask for a better result in my case!!!

Lisa Owen was my third attorney. What I thought was going to be an easy case, rapidly escalated to one of the worst experiences I have ever been through. A divorce. If everything is smooth and no issues at all, maybe any attorney will do. When things get nasty and everything is at stake, you want to be sure you have the right team behind you. I had to changed attorneys twice because I found out as things progressed, the case was beyond the level of competance for the current attorney. One of the attorneys had to withdraw from the case because she admitted it was beyond her abilities and experience. I wish I had saved all the wasted money and time with the first two. All I wanted, was to know, that when we went to the mat "court", the team and person fighting for me, that I had total trust and faith in them. No matter the results, I wanted to know, they were the best. Lisa Owen was professional, 100% on her game, her team behind her including Natasha, Sarah, and several others, were always pushing and driving forward. Lisa actually scared me she is so good. Sharp, articulate, fast thinker, great debator, driven, witty, a total bad as#. She is a true bull dawg and exactly what you want if the case is something that truly matters. Lisa called me on her family vacation, pushed me non stop, she thought about things I never would have, I was in awe of her and her team the whole way through. She ran the show....She directed everything. she was in charge....and that is exactly what I wanted. Yes, I paid a lot of money to hire someone of her caliber, but, I would have saved so much money if I have contacted her first. I am so thankful to my friend that I called who works in the legal system and asked for help and who was the best? I wish I had called her at the very beginning. She said, without a doubt, you call Lisa Owen. What will it cost you if you lose your case? What will it cost you if you don't settle in a more favorable position for you? My divorce was the worst event of my adult life. Far worse than I could have ever imagined. The emotional drain, the physical exhaution, the fear of what may happen. Once again, some couples get divorced and it is a simple conversation and they draw it up and it is over....But if things turn nasty, if things are complicated with your family, businesses, etc, if you think you need the best, if you want the best possible outcome, and the total confidence in the team you hire....I could not recommend Lisa Owen more highly. In my professional career, in any business field, you know when you are working with someone who is one of the best in their industry....Lisa is one of those people, as is her entire team. I am a Marietta native. I am a 25 year veteran in the mortgage industry, and unfortunately I help clients every month go through a divorce. There is usually a home and a mortgage to deal with. You want the best helping navigate these steps. I typically help one of them move out and buy a home, and the other, I help to refinance the mortgage into their name. It is a very structured and a very emotional process. I never thought I would personally go through it myself. I now feel like I have a Ph'D in the mortgage/divorce space. I was going through this to settle my case, but also to learn as much as I could as to the logistics of all that can take place on the legal side. I was an apprentice watching one of the best in the industry, and paying very close attention, because I was the case being tried. I am not a personal friend of Lisa's. This review was not requested. I will rarely ever give a review, but when I do, it is only for someone that I will give my personal approval for them. If you want the best, and if you can hire her....you want Lisa Owen. If you want to buy or refinance a house, call me....if you want to bury your spouse, call me....and I will introduce you to Lisa. OK. maybe not bury your spouse...but you get it. Navigating the process of finding a lawyer is not an easy one but I can tell you finding Hobson & Hobson P.C was nothing short of Divine Intervention from God!!! My lawyer Brandy Alexander and her paralegal Meghan Warren are absolutely amazing. They are attentive to my needs and concerns and always reply to me within 24 - 48 hours about my questions and concerns and I’ve had a lot of those. They are very knowledgeable on Family Law and I’m definitely getting what I paid for. They keep me updated on every step in my case and are very thorough with handling my case. My case involves Child Custody Modification and that’s not a very easy process mentally to deal with. However Brandy and Meghan do their best to make it as bearable as they possible can. They do their best to get the best possible outcome for your situation and with them I can clearly see the path forward with my case knowing my child best interest is the main concern of not only myself but my team I’m working with as well. Thank you Hobson & Hobson P.C!!

Paid $200 for a consultation with Attorney Potter and I’m honestly not sure what I paid for. I gave a detailed description of my case and asked 7 questions to gauge whether I wanted to hire her or not and she just talked in circles for the entire hour. She didn’t answer none of my questions and was very long winded. I will not be hiring this firm bc if she talked for 1 hour about absolutely nothing, I can’t imagine how much my total cost would be at $390 a hour for her to represent me. Honestly, I want a refund. Some of the questions I asked were how long would it take her to get up to speed on my case, has she handled cases like mine and what were the outcomes, what are the possible outcomes of my case, can she identify anything that I can settle on, and how can I avoid future cases. All of her answers were “I don’t know.” I am looking for an attorney with a strategy. If I explain my case in detail, I expect you to be able to provide insights based on your experiences. This was supposed to be legal advice. I want my $200 back.

THIS LAW FIRM DOES NOT FIGHT FOR RIGHTS OF FATHERS--------LOOK FOR A LOCAL LAWYER!! Disappointment is a complete understatement with this law firm and Ms. Dione Potter. This law firm drags out the process and charges for each email and phone call they make while continuing to drag the case out. I truly felt Ms. Potter was working for opposing counsel. Everything opposing counsel wanted she got with NO fight from Ms. Potter. Everything opposing counsel said in court was just allowed to be said about me with not one objection. I lost everything except what the mom allowed me to have....thank goodness she allowed me visitation because honestly if she said "no" to that I would not have gotten that either. I've asked the firm why I did not get anything I asked for and of course they nor she could answer. She truly feels she did a good job........ child supoort increased from $700.00 to 1,130.00 per month absolutely no final decision making for my child, even though I was told I would get some rights, but the mother has all those rights I requested a Guardian ad Litem, I was told I would get it and the judge goes that route. But NO GAL assigned, opposing counsel did not want one she sat and watched as opposing counsel said tons of untruths about me and I got the privilege to pay my ex's lawyer fees So I spent close to $30,000.00 with this firm with nothing to show for it, except for a laywer who thinks she did a good job. They are only good at doing one thing........billing you IF YOU ARE A FATHER FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS.......DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM

You pay for a consultation 125, then you pay a retainer 1800, then you pay their processing fee (400)…. He called me to set up meeting. Told him I work 3 shift the later the better. How about 3pm? Great I said, whatever works for you. Then he offered 330…. Again whatever works. Called me next day saying he had court on day HE scheduled me, but may be continued…. If continued I wouldn’t hear from him, if not he would call to reschedule. Literally called me the next day to tell me it was continued. So I came into the office concerned that his lack of scheduling abikity was costing me money. His very unprofessional receptionist finally got him to discuss we’re he claims it wasn’t being charged. Had one meeting with the lawyer. Left out of their doubting he could walk and chew gum at the same time. Literally talked in circles the entire time. What a joke. He told me it would cost 50k and I was only going for a contempt accusation. Fired him after first meeting Robert was first name in st Charles location. Paid over 2400 to them, and then I get a bill for another 125. Hired a new lawyer Dodd, she showed up, had it thrown out with most my new retainer refunded. Do not waste your time or money with cordell cordell.

Beyond Mike's knowledge of the law I believe he is an amazing attorney and good man with regards to how well he explained everything to me, communicated regularly with me about my case, and actually strategized and fought to achieve and exceed my goals. Five stars all around!

I hired Pam for my traumatic and messy custody case against my abusive and narcissistic ex-husband after I was referred to her by two different professionals. I made the mistake of first hiring a "prestigious" high-end firm in Del Mar, that absolutely ruined my life, cost me almost $80,000 and gave me awful legal advice; leaving me legally obligated to further endure my abusive ex-husband's unwarranted control for 2 YEARS with their horrible representation, despite psychological evaluations and mental health professionals in our case blatantly stating that I was indeed a victim of his manipulation and lies and he was solely intending to hurt me by taking our sons. Pam came into a cyclone of craziness a year and a half into my case, and in just 4 months she was able to undo all of the horrors that I had been forced to endure, standing up for me and being my and my children's voice in the courtroom. After our first meeting I walked out, finally having hope that someone was going to be able to help me, as Pam was no-nonsense and it was easy to see she sincerely cared about getting my children back to me and my life back to normal. Divorce and custody battles are awful, awful circumstances to endure. If you don't have a strong, intelligent and determined attorney on your side, it is so easy to get lost in the shuffle in the over saturated courts, and bullied by other, more aggressive attorneys. I 110%, whole heartedly believe that without Pam, I would've been stuck in this mess for years to come. She is by far the best attorney I have encountered, and she saved mine and my children's lives. If you need someone to fight for you and your children, Pam is your woman.

My twin girls were being abused by their mother located in another country and were taken in to custody by CPS, I contacted Pam and right away she sprung into action, she immediately made it that my girls case would be tried where I lived which is north San Diego county, that made a huge strategically difference in my case. Had Pam not been so proactive things would've turned out differently I'm sure, but I now how full custody of my girls and even though my case in now closed she still checks in on me and my girls to make sure we are doing good. Trusting Pam with your case would be the best choice anyone that has the opportunity to hire her can make, quality and care that you can depend on.

I highly recommend Champion Legal Resources. Cheryl is amazing. I was nervous and scared going into her office to file for divorce, however, her confidence and compassion immediately put me at ease. Cheryl was honest and direct, helping me through every step of my divorce as quickly and efficiently as possible. Cheryl and her paralegal Liz always made sure I clearly understood what was going on with my case throughout the process and were very prompt at returning my phone calls and emails. I am beyond grateful to Cheryl for keeping me focused on important issues while providing emotional support to achieve a favorable outcome in my divorce. It’s been a pleasure knowing and working with Cheryl and Liz.

I don't recommend this law firm to anybody, my husband had Christine Brown as his attorney and he decided not to go forward with the divorce, he paid them over 4K to represent him, and when he asked was he owed money back. Christine and Kelly said no they sent an invoice. Also, Christine is mad because my husband asked her to recuse herself from his case. After all, he wasn't going to pay them any more money which they took over 4K from him already. The receptionist Kelly emailed him like you still owed us money in she was harassing him and they took all of his money. The receptionist Kelly and Christine Brown the attorney don't know how to talk to people they're not people person, it's like they are out to just get money from clients and don't care about the wellbeing of the clients and their clients.

I hired Jessica on behalf of my son for a custody case. My son was trying to get custody against the maternal grandmother. One would think this is a slam dunk type case for a parent to get custody but unfortunately, it's not. Jessica worked on this case for a little over a year and did a great job based on the circumstances. We had a GAL who recommended that the grandmother get custody of the child but her recommendation had nothing to do with understanding of the law. Jessica was extremely passionate about this case and I would say she was amazing in trying to overcome so many obstacles that should not have been apart of this case. I would highly recommend Jessica as a Father's Rights Attorney.

Jessica actually did me a favor by taking my case. I could have used other lawyers, but would have shorted myself. She is honest with you about your situation, tells you what to expect, and fights for you. She protected my rights as a father, who had done nothing wrong, against someone who had been working with "big name" lawyers to paint me in a negative light and build a divorce case against me for almost a year, without my knowledge. She had multiple lawyers as opponents for my case and was on top of the application of law and facts in a manner which almost made me feel embarrassed for them.

Mr. Treadaway is slow, disorganized and lacking in attention to details. I hired Mr. Treadaway to assist in a divorce proceeding. He asked twice for monies which I paid. There was no verbal or written contract outlining how or when monies would be paid or any accounting of those funds. I was under the assumption that if further $ was required it would be brought up at that point. 5 months later after the divorce I received an invoice for a rather significant sum of money. Further review showed the invoice to have a $1000 "error". I contacted Mr. Treadaway by email regarding the invoice and was afforded NO response. 5 months later her turned my invoice over for collections to another attorney and demanded interest that was never disclosed.

Gil might be a great lawyer. I had a mediation for legitimation case in Cobb and he where the state appointed him for our mediator and he was completely biased and stereotyped me. My child’s father couldn’t spell our child’s name correctly but he stereotyped me as someone who didn’t want my child to see their dad. He gave legal advice but claimed he wasn’t. He withheld information and made it clear he was advocating for my child’s father not what’s best for my daughter. Mediation felt like a boy’s club. He left many holes in our agreement, made many judgemental comments to me, and dismissed every one of my concerns. I would give my experience 0/10 but google makes me pick at least one star. He’s not the type of person who realizes these are real people’s lives we are talking about. It’s all a paycheck to him.

John was able to see me, I wasn’t even there an hour, and was charged 300.00 which I really could not afford. Did not respond. Did not know about my case, despite my providing information. Never knew where my file was. Did not follow through. Asked questions to the defendant that she did not know the answers to. Seemed to have an inappropriate relationship with my ex when she had to have a "Private conference" with him. Never recouped any of the money clearly entitled to me. Ended up having to fire her and hire another lawyer. Wasted time and money. Wish I knew she had legal charges filed for actions she took when out drinking with a male client of hers. If you are a male, she will work with you just fine, from what I hear. But, if you are an honest working female with a pay check, she will just take your money.

Money hungry law firm. Our initial consultation was a waste of money. We were quoted an initial deposit and escrow fee which barely lasted a couple weeks. The emails from the firm were asking for more money with very little information. The home check they said we wouldn’t need cost us $250 because the judge said otherwise. They sent my husband to a fingerprinting facility that couldn’t even do that right. They failed and their staff couldn’t even figure it out. Waste of money and time spent trying to get that sorted. They couldn’t even show up to our court date on time. The after adoption instructions were basically figure it out yourself. We of course had to pay for that lack of information. I would never recommend them to my worst enemy. Don’t waste your time or money on them. It only stresses you out and ruins the experience.

This attorney was in the pocket of the other law firm! He did not fight for me or my children. He talked me into giving up much more than I should have and I wish I had not listened to him. I had no experience, so I was too trusting and believed he was there for me but he was not. I think he was very intimidated by the opposing attorney and he would just give in. The process took forever because he allowed the other firm to control everything and they wanted to drag it out. Do not use this attorney!

I cannot say enough good things about Alan. Alan employed my first wife as his paralegal for over 10 years. He then represented her in our divorce. Alan and I have been (and remained) friends for over 20 years. Several times over the years whenever I have had a problem or issue, he has been there for me with great advice and counsel based on his knowledge, diligence, and wealth of experience. Alan has been such a friend and mentor that I knew just who I needed to call - the guy who represented my first ex wife (and got us a fair and amicable settlement for about $3,000 each). On Christmas Eve 2020, I had to deal with the kidnapping of my children by my second wife. I knew just who to call - that afternoon. Alan was with me every step of the way, getting my kids back and navigating me through a monumentally difficult and contentious divorce - against an impossibly belligerent ex wife and her overly aggressive and inflammatory counsel. He was a source of great legal advice, strategy, and personal support - all debts which I can never repay. Against seemingly impossible odds he got us to a successful settlement and allowed me to move on with my life. I enthusiastically recommend Alan for any issue you might have. He is great and a lifelong friend.

I hired Mr. Manheim to represent me in a divorce. He asked for a 5000 retainer that would go toward fees/expenses and said I would get money back if the full retainer was not used. He assured me that if it was an easy case, it would not use up the full retainer. I met with him once and he filed paperwork with the court, but ultimately my husband and I decided not go through with a divorce, so very little "work" was done on his part. I was never provided with a billing statement showing what work was done and never received any money back after repeated requests. He would tell me I was due money back and even said he put a check in the mail, but I never received it and then he stopped returning my calls. I feel like I got scammed.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
