My ex took my Son to Illinois on an order written by a Commissioner in Bakersfield. She wanted a $50 consult fee. I paid $25 in cash, and wrote a check for the other $25. After getting paid and putting out her cigarette, she told me, "I can't help you, take it up in Illinois." That was twenty years ago, without a visitation order, I HAVEN'T SEEN HIM SINCE. I PUT A STOP PAYMENT ON THE CHECK. JUSTICE?

Cynthia yelled at me while explaining a visitation order. I could not for the life of me understand the judges order and during a phone call she yelled at me while explaining it. She l apologized after - said she had a long day, but the experience rubbed me the wrong way. Her staff was great and always gave our family updated through email and phone calls.

Considering hiring this attorney , but her prices are doubled compared to a few other local offices…so do some research beforehand. Her personality was great and I found some helpfulness in the advice I was given. After my consult I spoke with a friend who hired her as her attorney to gain insight on what it’ll be like working with her. she said lots things would always pop up because of personal events happening in Cynthias life. Which caused delay with her case. She also mentioned her office manager just wasn’t the best to work with and always made her feel stupid for asking about her case or having any questions at all. She ended up hiring someone different.. I will mention.. I didn’t like how her office manager spoke with me when I scheduled my consult either. So extremely rude with snide comments. When I called back to see how I could pay, I was greeted with a different office staff who seemed more polite and helpful to my concerns for payment! I spoke with this lady for about 10 minutes. If I remember correctly her name was Marlene! If you call this attorneys office just make sure to speak with her! Extremely helpful!! Thought I’d leave a more recent review since I struggled to find one. Still debating hiring Cynthia. Will leave an updated review when I have decided.

Hired Gina for custody modification but from the beginning she made false promises and mistakes . I felt misinformed and manipulated into a prolong court process which has financially devasted me and my young kids. My kids are still being abused but now we are even poorer than before thanks to Gina and her office. I am absolutely heartbroken and suffering but instead of admitting her defeat and faults she threatened me with a lawsuit and collections. Please choose someone else as your attorney so you don't suffer like us. Heartbroken mom.

I had to find another lawyer that was gonig to take my side all the way to the courtroom!

After researching companies that were successful in cases against HOA's I hired this firm 5 years ago. I asked if they could win and was told yes. February 2023 we had to agree to a settlement. In that 5 years we changed lawyers 5 times. I would call to find out what was happening and was always told that they were waiting on the HOA attorney and that's just the way this worked. I ended up paying this attorney more than if I had just paid the HOA fine. There is no real update from them, unless you call their monthly bill an update. The last attorney assigned did manage to get a settlement worked out. We took it because I was not going to drag this out another 5 years and 5 different attorneys.

This is a poor start. After speaking with the staff and an attorney with the John Miller and Associates Law Firm... I paid the non-refundable fee, agreed to the initial date and time set by the staff and called 1 hour before the appointed time to confirm the appointment. After the appointed time and 15 min before the close of business, I called the office and was informed that the attorney was not going to make the meeting. Summary: the attorney did not display the expected professionalism and courtesy to take the time to call to me, and provide an apology and reschedule the meeting. This is definitely a teachable moment for John Miller and his Associates...provide timely information to the clients and be more considerate of our time. Thank you Keith Wright

This lawyer strictly follows the rules and doesn't go the extra mile to assist you. She makes big promises but fails to deliver. She couldn't make time for an important interview, even though she knew about it months in advance. Instead, she said she'd listen in by phone but didn't even bother to do that. As expected, the interview didn't go well, and I had to pay thousands more to fix the mistakes she made. Save your money and avoid this lawyer; she's only in it for the money and lacks the emotional intelligence needed for the job.

Ms. Fielder lacks integrity and that is Key for any Lawyer when dealing with people's family, personal well being etc. I had a horrible experience with her after paying her for services. Poor communication with keeping me informed. Never returned phone calls/emails. Therefore when we arrived for court she couldnt even answer the judges questions! It was embarrasing! Not to mention she was late and forgot to file documents with the court! I paid a large amount of money as a retainer fee and she took advantage of my personal situation. Im not sure how much experience this woman has but Id say she could use about 20 more years and a few classes in humility.. DO NOT HIRE HER. When I decided to hire her I based my decision on the reviews on this site which I now know were probaly wirtten by Carrie Fiedler herself. I would hate for anyone else hoping for a good attorney to make the same mistake I did. TRUST ME! KEEP LOOKING!

Complete waste of time and money. I went after thousands of dollars of arrears and an increase of child support from the non custodial parent who has completely abandoned his children. He did not even address the arrears amount in court, so I was awarded nothing in that regard. I was awarded an increase of $21 a month. The final court hearing was in January and he didn't have enough common decency or professionalism to provide me with a final copy of the new order. Not to mention he called me a b*tch and screamed at me to shut up. Not recommended.

This is my opinion but I feel compelled to share my experience with this firm as a cautionary tale to others. My time with them was marked by disappointment and frustration, leaving me deeply dissatisfied. From the beginning, there was a glaring lack of communication and transparency regarding the progress of my case. This made me feel misled and undervalued, especially given the significant investment I had made. Despite my efforts to seek guidance from both the paralegal and the attorney, I received inadequate responses and minimal support. I often found myself reaching out to customer service, who, while helpful, couldn't provide the clarity I needed. Moreover, I was dismayed to discover that basic inquiries about my case's status resulted in additional charges, even when I hadn't heard from the attorney. I found myself billed for work without any updates, and strategy sessions were conducted without my involvement or explanation of their purpose. The contract I signed gave them alarming freedom to withdraw money from my account without proper explanation, with invoices offering little clarity on the charges incurred. The fees for their services seemed disproportionate to the work being done, indicating a prioritization of profit over client satisfaction. This led to unnecessary stress and dissatisfaction throughout my experience. Overall, I strongly advise others to approach this firm with caution, as my encounter left much to be desired in terms of professionalism and transparency. Additionally, I was forced to seek assistance from another firm, incurring further expenses. Despite this, I received only a small portion of the funds held in escrow back to me.

My Opinion - The Hobson's lacked professional etiquette. I hired this practice for a simple custody case. Upon meeting with the office, I was assigned a great attorney - Ms. Goff - who after months of paperwork, meetings, and hearings - disappeared. Upon her "leaving" my case was shuffled through multiple attorneys in the office that did not have any knowledge of the case. Each time someone new touched it, I was charged more. When I started asking questions and asked to speak directly to a Hobson about my concerns; they dropped my case stating that I did not trust them. Thousands of dollars simply thrown down the drain. After finding a new attorney, the case was easily settled in a few short months. It seems that my time spent in the hands of Hobson and Hobson was all about playing a game with the opposing attorney and how much money could be made. They took advantage of the situation for financial gain. - Again; in my opinion.

Mr. Spetalnick was extremely combative, unsupportive and literally called me “very stubborn” during our brief consultation. Not only did I feel as if I was being legally mansplained regarding my case but he was actively interrupting and belittling me as I candidly and vulnerably explained my situation. I felt as if he has defended many men in family law cases and was projecting a perspective against mothers in legal cases. He will not be retaining my services, and my hope is with this review he analyzes the privilege and patriarchy that propagate his behavior and will eventually catch up with him.

when my x stopped paying child support, I knew I needed help so I hired Jon Spetalnick. Mr. Spetalnick provided an initial consultation at no charge and thoroughly explained the process and the next steps. Rather than charge me by the hour, he provided a flat fee for his work up until the court date and a 2nd fee if we went to court. My x on the other hand, hired an attorney with a large practice who charged him an hourly fee and billed him for every little thing. Ultimately, we did not end up in court because of Mr. Spetalnick's hard work and expertise. It was clear that Mr. Spetalnick spent a great deal of time on my case and thought through the best way to document and present the facts to my x's attorney and to a judge if we ended up in court. We settled out of court and everything was in my favor. I definitely made the right decision when I hired Mr. Spetalnick and I know the overall cost was much less than it would have been had I hired an attorney who had charged me an hourly rate. Mr Spetalnick can be very direct, blunt and somewhat harsh at times, but don't let that scare you away. He's passionate about his work and works tirelessly for his clients.

This is actually a city of Marietta prosecutor that prejudges your case based on his own personal experiences in life. She did absolutley nothing to help my case. She just pushed papers. She didn't look out for my best interest or offer ideas of what I was entitled to during my divorce. Thus my kids ended up with little child support and I ended up with no spousal support even though I stayed home with my kids for close to eleven years. We are now hurting desperately for money to live. I personal paid $6,000 for the divorce and ended up paying over $40,000 to go back to school to earn enough of a living to be able to support my children. I am in serious debt now. My ex walked away with everything because Ms. Boga didn't know my rights nor did she fight for my children.

Marian is a very poor lawyer who mishandled my divorce in many ways. I provided her $10,000 in retainer and her assistant was the only person I ever spoke to. She was out for months with an illness and her admin never disclosed the fact that she was not working. She mishandled the discovery and financial disclosure, provided no advise on division of assets... I can go on and on. What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
