I had Dori for the first half of a case with the previous firm she was at. Unfortunately she left the firm before my trial date. I am sure she was unable to inform me about her departure because of contract or whatever. I wish that she could have represented me at trial for my child custody matter, because I felt like she had much more confidence and would have gotten me better results. I tried finding her online but had no luck. She was familiar with my case and I felt like she actually believed in me as a father, which in turn she naturally would have fought harder. She was always quick to respond to any emails or phone calls---always within 24 business hours. I would strongly recommend Dori.

Jasmine represented me in a custody case regarding my 12 year old where his father was requesting a drastic change in the visitation we have had for most of my son’s lie. I had a lot of anxiety surrounding this process and felt very uneducated and unprepared. Jasmine put my mind at ease from the beginning and guided me each step of the way to help me feel as prepared as possible. I had a lot of questions and she took time to answer each one. She did an excellent job advocating for me and my son and presenting my case to show the drastic change being requested would be detrimental to my son. In the end, our custody and visitation remained the same. If I ever find myself in this situation again, she will be my first phone call!

Beth Chavez is not your typical attorney who i just out to make money. She is one of the few that actually cares about not just her clients but the people she speaks with. I recently had a child support modification that the other party wanted to do discovery and waste a lot of time and money. I consulted with Beth who listened to me and at the end of the consultation gave me advise on how to push back on the opposing side to have this wrapped up without litigation or discovery. This consultation and advice saved me thousands of dollars that Beth could have obtained but instead she is a compassionate attorney who is in the business for the right reason! I know at some point i will need to hire another attorney and it WILL be Beth! Thank you again!

Her staff of people she has working for her in her office are wonderful as well! I'll never use another attorney, except Ms. Michael! There's not one bad thing I can say about her!

Margaret Englisby represented me in my divorce. A divorce that should have been pretty straight forward, but ended up being very ugly due to my ex husband. Margaret battled the entire time always putting my best interest first. Three years later my ex came at me again for a totally ridicules thing, once again Margaret was in my corner battling for me. Always straight forward, she keeps you informed without running up your bill with ton's of phone calls or emails.

Mr. Coates is a very good lawyer that knows his job. He helped me obtain custody of my children after my wife ran off with them to another state. He not only got the job done but seemed to genuinely care about the welfare of my children throughout the entire ordeal. If you need a good lawyer on a custody issue please give him a call. He also did a great job on my separation agreement even though I was on a time constraint and needed it done in a hurry.

I received two misdemeanor summonses while driving in Dinwiddie County - one for speeding, the other for a much more serious charge (eluding). I called a number of attorneys in the area, but was very impressed with Attorney Hartz from the beginning. She immediately gave me a list of things that I needed to do, and it just felt like she was taking a personal interest in my case. The bottom line is that Attorney Hartz was able to settle out of court, with the speeding charge being reduced to a non-misdemeanor, and the eluding charge dropped altogether! I was impressed at every stage by her knowledge and professionalism. In addition, her assistant Ashley also was very knowledgable and was able to answer any specific questions we had about the case, and she was always available by phone or by e-mail. All in all, I was extremely impressed by the handling of our case, and would recommend Attorney Hartz to anyone who is in a similar situation.

My daughter was charged with Malicious Wounding. I was worried and afraid and literally walked up to Ms. Patterson in the court parking lot asking for help. Jennifer agreed to take the case and went to work immediately to get her out of jail before the holiday weekend. She was successful in doing so. She continued to work diligently and subsequently all charges were dropped!! Knowledgeable, committed, great communicator, respected, understanding....these are just a few words I would use to describe Jennifer Patterson. I will always be grateful for the kindness extended to me as well as the hard work on my daughters behalf.

He helped me with business litigation, my divorce in 05, General business and contract law. He knows the law very well, and knows how to apply it. Don’t let the his relaxed attitude fool you. In law the “devil is in the details” he knows the details. One of the best kept secrets in the area. A good lawyer with good rates. And he will actually return calls. I find that refreshing. And if you need him. He can be reached after hours. Much better service than the ambulance chancers you see on TV.

I retained ShounBach and Mr. Tom Velarde to complete my difficult and painful divorce case and handle it through the appropriate Fairfax Circuit Court in Virginia. Tom is a highly capable attorney, very much detailed oriented, hard working. He prepared for the custody trial diligently and has been working hard to help me realize best state for two minor children. Tom has also an excellent support team including Laurena and Angela who have handled my trial preparations extremely well. I am exceedingly satisfied and indebted to Tom Velarde, his support team and ShounBach for its handling of my family matter issues. My case has been very complicated because my soon to be ex-spouse has done many things to make my divorce extra difficult for not only I but our children as well, but with Tom’s guidance we have navigated many of the legal landmines successfully. We are expected to finalize the divorce case in a few months. I would highly recommend Tom Velarde to my peers, colleagues, and anyone else in need of a strong family law attorney. I’ve noticed that ShounBach as a firm is a professional, highly responsive, reputable, and ethical law firm. Even in this COVID situation Tom and his firm didn’t miss a beat. First of all, may I compliment on how awesome he is??? The most affordable lawyer I have ever seen for a case like this. So affordable I don't even want to post how little my fiancé (at the time) had to pay in case he changes his rate into the future. That's how affordable and fair he is. In all fairness, I did his filing for him. Haha If you have a lazy gold digger for a wife who wants to take your money bone dry he is definitely your man. I would say he is the best divorce lawyer in Hampton Roads. The best quality and price that I have ever seen. And he will end it! End it! End it!!!! He got her to agree to terms of my fiancé to sign...and this is a woman who initially wanted to murder him! I thought I was saving a life when we met. Anyway... I know he thinks he was always in email corrospondance with my fiancé but it was always me that emailed him, found him in the first place and made things looked like my fiancé had sent it. I did it out of love *sigh* at the time *sigh*. Only thing he ever did when it came to you was verbally speak. Never email. You were always speaking to yours truly. I'm just really good with writing things. Kinda my schtick. I wasn't impressed with any other 10 or so lawyers I checked out, some even in person...I thought he was screwed. Lol. Because my fiancé at the time had no money because he pays child support and apparently still doesn't understand responsibility until he has to get it court ordered. Which I think is ridiculous. Who likes court??? Mark is your man. He can handle it. He may be the only one that I could ever envision to be chipper in court. Probably because he knows he's going to win. Lol: So glad I found him because prior to him, he had another lawyer I literally fired. So when I found this website I remembered I forgot to rate the poor man! Mark! Here's a read so long it will make up the time it took for me to actually rate you. Finally, a message to Mark. You did such a wonderful name on my fiancé's case. I really really appreciate you more than you will ever know. I was raised around lawyers my entire life and you are such a JOY to be around! Most lawyers are such a snore or they're scary. You did a great job assuring a lost man, that you could turn his life around. I was in love with him. You did great! And for that, I forever thank you. But wasn't that the best filing job, you've ever seen??? I did that to save on cost and time. Best of luck to you and your family.

I found Mr. Bodner to be quite honest and forthright in his assessment of my case. He clearly stated his outlook on my case, and the odds that were stacked against me. I took my chances with him, and to my delight – (all-be-it, could be short-lived), the case was eventually dismissed. Besides his un-pretentious nature, and his dignified professionalism, what makes Mr. Bodner so outstanding, was his intelligence and his “court-room” brilliance! Mark knows the law, and he was able to translate his knowledge into a win for me. Although he seems to be very busy, I would certainly recommend Mark to you. Thank You.

Despite my complicated case, Carole significantly made progress towards a settlement by working with the opposing counselor and moving things forward. I was working with a different attorney and unfortunately, things weren't going anywhere for more than 6 months. When that attorney left the office and Carole was assigned to work on my case everything shifted for the better. She is very cooperative, responsive, and very approachable at any time to answer questions or even just rant about the situation. Thanks to her communication skills with the opposing counselors, My case was settled and I got divorced without compromising any of my rights.

There was never any question that I asked that was not answered clearly to the point that I could understand, especially when explaining the legal system. Mr. Scheid handled my nephew's brain-injury case in which he was at fault for drunk driving. This turned out to be a long, drawn out legal matter. Mr. Scheid was patient and thorough. He kept us abreast of developments at the many intervals of the case, and ultimately struck an equitable deal with the prosecution, which benefitted both the injured party and my nephew. I highly recommend Lisa Levy as an exceptional family attorney Ms. Levy took the time to truly understand the particulars of my case and the psychological profile of my ex. This enabled she and I to be of like minds in bringing a settlement which was advantageous for myself and supports the best interest of my child. I would not have been able to fight for my custodial rights and prevail in the process without Lisa looking out for my best interests. Ms. Levy educated me on legal strategies and state statutes beneficial to my case. Her insight into the mindset and precedents of the judge in my case proved invaluable. I felt comfortable bringing my concerns to Ms. Levy, relying on her ability to anticipate problems and present the best solutions in managing a complicated relationship with my ex. Choosing Lisa Levy as my attorney resulted in a carefully crafted Order designed to save time, money, and emotional distress going forward.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
