I am lucky to have Richard. He works very hard to deal with other lawyer to find the best way to solve the problem. I would recommend Richard to anyone! He took over a case for a personal injury because another lawyer was not treating us right. Richard is amazing. I can usually get him to call back right away, unless he is in court and responds to every email I send. He is prompt with delivery of updates and sends copies of any contact to all parties involved with the case. He is very dependable and easy to talk to about things. Really is a pleasure to have someone who actually believes in you to represent you. I have nothing but good things to say.

I have used Richard Fahey for several different concerns, including a dispute arising out of a construction project. He is also very knowledgeable in working with agencies pertaining to social services. Richard is an extremely honest individual. Prior to retaining him, he listened to my problems and attempted to help me via several phone calls without charge. After it was evident that I needed to retain an attorney, he has always displayed the utmost in professionalism. Richard is versed in a wide variety of subjects, however should he need additional resources, he meticulously researches the area in question. He is able to be assertive when necessary and has excellent writing skills. In aquiring the information necessary to represent me, he was meticulous in ensuring that he received all the important facts prior to our hearing. I would recommend him highly.

I contacted Mark Woodsmall around 12 years ago, when it was obvious that my son with autism as well as high cognitive abilities was having a hard time accessing his education, mostly due to atypical behaviors. After being ignored by the district, even when my son was lost in their care, I knew we needed help. Mark was the perfect fit for us. He was amazing to watch in IEP meetings, and I learned so much from him. He is calm, rational, and knows how to work with a team, which is what IEP meetings should be. I distinctly remember a meeting where Mark’s calm, rational thoughts helped the district to propose a solution to an issue. It was as if Mark had done a Jedi mind trick! They proposed exactly what we had entered the meeting knowing that we needed as an outcome for our son. Mark taught me patience. It takes time to get an IEP just right, but with Marks’s help, it will get there. After many evaluations, IEP meetings, multiple instances of filing for due process, and twice going to mediation, my son got everything he needed for him to access his education. He actually had FAPE. With Mark’s help, I learned how to navigate the system for my son. All along the way, multiple times in this process, I remember Mark asking if I felt if I could handle the meetings on my own now, without his direct help. I told him that he was in it for the long haul! However, what Mark does is amazing. Without even saying it, he tries to empower the parents to learn to advocate for themselves. He slowly starts to remove himself so that the parents can navigate the system on their own, empowered with the skills they need by watching and learning from him. Mark slowly faded out of our IEP meetings, and we as parents were able to continue getting everything our son needed, in a calm, professional, patient way, the Mark Woodsmall way. When we were just starting this process in kindergarten, I remember everyone I talked to about my son’s situation said that I had no chance of getting even a district provided, untrained, one-on-one aide for my son for key parts of his day. With Marks help, my son was able to have an ABA trained, one-on-one aide from an independent agency for his entire school day, from elementary school through middle school, at district expense, which was what he needed. The aide was only removed when my son no longer needed an aide. Had I just gone with the district’s offer, my son would have been placed in the SDC class in order to have the support of an aide to help with his behaviors, which would not have been appropriate for him. My son is where he is today due to the help of Mark Woodsmall and his team. I have referred many parents to Mark, and some have actually called and used him. I hope that this review can help other families who I don’t personally know. As a family friend and retired district administrator once told me (who was on the opposite side of the table from Mark on many instances), “Mark Woodsmall will get your son EVERYTHING that he needs.” This retired administrator was not from our district, and was happy for my son’s sake that I had found Mark. Deciding to let Mark help us was one of the best decisions I could have made in my life, for my son’s life.

It was about 10 years ago that I heard Mr. Woodsmall speak at an autism conference. My son was 2 at the time and I knew that if I ever needed representation in the future with a school district that I would contact Mr. Woodsmall. Fast forward 10 years, I am now an attorney myself, I needed representation and I contacted The Woodsmall Law Group. Mr. Woodsmall is the consummate professional. He is brilliant and thorough. His staff is equally as wonderful. Ms. Christina Brown is the associate attorney assigned to my matter. She is everything you would want in an attorney.

I have personally used Donovan Jacobs for a couple of different legal matters- injury claim, property damage and rental disagreement. In each case he was an excellent attorney. I have recommended him many times to family & friends and in each case he did not disappoint. Specifically, he ensured that I received almost 1800 dollars more for my totaled vehicle then originally offered. In another case he successfully won my full rental deposit back and an additional $1500 for not returning my deposit in a timely manner. Each time I have used him he has delivered

Donovan Jacobs handled a civil suit on my autistic brothers homicide and was so effective against the defendant, the State of California, they settled with my mother for $800,000.00. Donovan Jacobs has since proven himself in several other cases, including nearly a half million dollar settlement in an auto accident, and uncountable smaller cases that had big impacts for the betterment of his clients. Not only was Tim always available to keep me calm no matter how worried I became, he really followed through on his claims. He is extremely knowledgeable which became vary apparent at a hearing I sat in on. He went so far as to drive out and physically see the location were the incident occurred. With his knowledge and tenacity, he was able to drastically reduce my sentence . I truly felt like I had a good friend on my side throughout the entire proceedings. I HIGHLY recommend Tim to everyone I know.

Sophie took my case with short notice and came through with an excellent plan, careful coaching and a thoroughly convincing presentation. With her help, I won my unemployment reversal, and I could not have done so without her. She listened carefully to my situation, formulated our strategy and provided me the guidance I needed to bring about a reversal of my claim. She outlined a series of carefully directed questions to layout a clear path of the events, the path that the judge could follow to make the determination in my favor. She reached out to me promptly with her plan and coached me repeatedly and reassuringly. She was calming and thoughtful when I was suffering from serious anxiety. Sophie is the kind of professional I would recommend to anyone looking for excellence, character and integrity.

My wife and I found Bob Weaver with a Google Search because we needed a lawyer to deal with a disreputable contractor that was trying to extort us for purported work he had done on investment real property we owned in San Diego. This legal work to stop this illegal activity was way beyond what we were expecting. He is good! Later, he helped us with our home search as our real estate broker and with the mortgage process. We have the highest regard for Bob and the services he offers to clients. Highly recommended.

Danny is generous with his time, forthcoming, and attentive to clients' needs. I used Danny's services to set up a Trust, I relied on Danny when I had a business location issue, and I called on Danny when I had a labor dispute. Each time, Danny was there for me. He told me how it was and helped me to the fullest capacity. Danny is not the type of person you meet and instantly want to hug, but when he comes through, guns blazing, you won't stop hugging him. Our group hired Ryan when a government organization near our homes announced a project that had not gone through the proper CEQA and Coastal Development Permit environmental reviews. Ryan succeeded in preserving the public's right to be heard and in getting the organization to conform to the laws to which they should have conformed all along. The briefs, declarations and letters he wrote on our behalf were strong and thorough. Throughout the process, Ryan was always accessible, responsive, professional and fair in his billings. He was also very understanding of our lack of knowledge of the complicated CEQA and coastal laws and processes and he was always patient in explaining them to us. If we ever have another need for an environmental, land use or government agency attorney, we will call Ryan Moroney immediately.

During the entire time he worked my case I felt confident I had picked the right man for the job. It was absolutely amazing to watch the strategic maneuvers Fox implemented throughout the process. It was as if I was watching a master chess player. He walked me through the process and we were completely prepared come trial time. I can’t say enough about Fox to adequately convey his intelligent strategies, discretion and overall excellent knowledge and preparation of/for a trial. As my case was nearing the trial date, my former attorney was trying to scare me into settling, telling me I had no choice, telling me to concede and pay an exorbitant settlement. It became clear to me she was not prepared and not comfortable in a trial situation. I sought a second opinion from Fox and within days of meeting with him, he was up to speed on the details of my case, explained what the possible outcomes could be from the trial and that I actually had a strong case to go to trial. Immediately after relieving my former attorney and hiring Mr. Fox, he had discovery materials and subpoenas served, filed motions in support of my case and prepared me for trial. While the outcome of my day in court was not what I wished for, it was better than I could ever have hoped for without Fox. I ended up with a much better deal than I had thought possible thanks to Fox.

What a Government Lawyer Can Do for You

A government lawyer specializes in legal issues related to government policies, regulations, and disputes involving public entities. Whether you are a private individual, business, or government agency, a government lawyer provides expert guidance on navigating the complexities of government law. These attorneys handle cases ranging from constitutional law, administrative law, regulatory compliance, and government contracts to defending or challenging government actions.

Government lawyers help individuals and organizations understand their rights and obligations under the law, represent them in disputes with government agencies, and assist in matters of government contracting, procurement, or public policy.

When Should I Hire a Government Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a government lawyer in several situations involving government regulations, compliance, or disputes. Common reasons to hire a government lawyer include:

  • Government contracts and procurement: If you are bidding for or negotiating a contract with a government agency, a lawyer can help ensure compliance with federal, state, or local contracting rules.
  • Regulatory compliance: Businesses operating in highly regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, environmental sectors) often need legal guidance to comply with government regulations and avoid penalties.
  • Government investigations: If you're being investigated by a government agency such as the IRS, SEC, or EPA, a government lawyer can help defend you against allegations or negotiate settlements.
  • Challenging government actions: If a government agency has denied a permit, license, or benefit, a lawyer can help you appeal or challenge the decision in court.
  • Constitutional and civil rights issues: If you believe your constitutional rights have been violated by a government entity, such as in cases involving free speech or discrimination, a government lawyer can help you seek justice.
  • Public policy or lobbying efforts: If you are involved in lobbying or advocating for policy changes at the local, state, or federal level, a government lawyer can provide legal advice on compliance with lobbying laws and strategies for effective advocacy.

Hiring a government lawyer early in the process can help you navigate complex legal frameworks and avoid costly mistakes when dealing with government-related legal issues.

What Does a Government Lawyer Do?

A government lawyer provides a wide range of services that cover interactions between individuals, businesses, and government entities. They can:

  • Assist with government contracts: Helping clients navigate procurement laws, drafting contracts, and resolving disputes related to government contracting.
  • Provide regulatory compliance advice: Offering guidance on meeting regulatory requirements for industries subject to federal, state, or local laws.
  • Handle administrative law matters: Representing clients before government agencies, such as appealing administrative decisions, applying for permits, or defending against regulatory enforcement actions.
  • Challenge or defend government actions: Representing clients in lawsuits involving government agencies, including constitutional challenges, civil rights violations, or disputes over government decisions.
  • Negotiate settlements with government entities: If a government agency is pursuing legal action against you or your business, a lawyer can negotiate settlements to avoid costly litigation.
  • Advocate for policy changes: Advising clients on legal strategies for influencing public policy, including lobbying and drafting legislation.
  • Litigate constitutional issues: Handling cases related to the Constitution, such as First Amendment rights, due process violations, or unlawful government actions.

How Are Government Lawyers Paid?

Government lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: For ongoing legal matters, such as regulatory compliance or government contract disputes, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates can vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as drafting a government contract or filing an administrative appeal, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For clients who need ongoing legal support, such as businesses frequently interacting with government agencies, a lawyer may charge a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases involving litigation, such as civil rights violations, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Government Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a government lawyer depends on the complexity of the legal issue, the lawyer's experience, and their fee structure. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Hourly rates: Government lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For specific legal services, such as drafting a government contract, flat fees can range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the nature of the service.
  • Retainer fees: A retainer for ongoing legal work with government agencies can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the scope and frequency of the work.
  • Contingency fees: In cases where a lawyer works on contingency, their fee is usually a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or damages awarded if the case is successful.

Be sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your consultation to ensure that you understand the fees associated with your case.

Top Questions to Ask a Government Lawyer

When hiring a government lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and skills needed for your specific situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What is your experience with government law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has substantial experience in handling cases or issues involving government agencies, regulatory compliance, or constitutional law.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services - whether by the hour, flat fee, retainer, or contingency fee - and request an estimate of costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your legal options and the likelihood of success based on your specific situation.
  4. How do you handle interactions with government agencies?
Ask about their approach to dealing with government entities and their experience with specific agencies relevant to your case (e.g., IRS, EPA, SEC).
  5. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Ask about their experience with similar cases and whether they have achieved favorable outcomes in the past.
  6. Who will handle my case?
Clarify whether the lawyer you are meeting with will personally handle your case or whether junior attorneys or paralegals will do most of the work.

How to Check the Credibility of a Government Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable government lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Review their professional experience: Look for specific experience in government-related legal issues, such as regulatory compliance, government contracts, or administrative law, on their website or professional profile.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check online reviews and ratings on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s reputation and track record.
  • Ask for references: Request references from previous clients who have worked with the lawyer on government-related matters to understand their experience and effectiveness.
  • Check for membership in relevant organizations: Look for memberships in professional organizations such as the American Bar Association's Administrative Law Section or the National Institute of Government Procurement, which can indicate the lawyer’s focus on government law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a government lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed description of your legal issue: Be prepared to explain your situation, whether it’s a regulatory compliance question, a government contract issue, or a dispute with a government agency.
  • Relevant documents: Bring any paperwork related to your case, such as contracts, permits, letters from government agencies, or notices of investigation.
  • A list of questions: Write down any questions you have about your case, including the legal process, potential outcomes, and costs.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any relevant events, such as the issuance of government orders or interactions with government agencies.
  • Goals for the outcome: Be ready to discuss what you hope to achieve, whether it’s a favorable settlement, regulatory compliance, or overturning a government decision.

By being organized and prepared, you can help your lawyer understand your situation more quickly and give you the best legal advice moving forward.
