My mom was in assisted living, and needed to have a new Power of Attorney and Advanced Healthcare Directive. The existing ones were over 10 years old, and given her dementia, I had to legally be able to handle my mom's affairs. I initially had trouble finding an attorney who would do this, but after Lorraine and I met through LinkedIn, she agreed to do the Power of Attorney and Advanced Healthcare Directive. She did both the long and short form Powers of Attorney, to make sure my mom and I would be well covered for any situation. Her fee was extremely reasonable, considering the time she spent preparing all of the documents, and the travel time for the round trip to and from the assisted living facility, which was 60 miles each way. Lorraine treated my mom like her own mother during the time spent signing the documents at the assisted living facility. Her patience and kindness towards my mom was heart warming to say the least. I had occasions where either the long or short form Power of Attorney had to be submitted to the insurance company or to the bank on my mom's behalf, and there were never any issues. Lorraine was fantastic in every way, and I very highly recommend her to anyone.

I had been working with an attorney concerning a trademark dispute. The service and actions by this individaul were awful and I was about to loose the entire case due to ignored deadlines. Mr Reidl quickly researched the case and accomplished more in 2 days than the other lawyer had done in 2 years. I highly recommend him.He has a vast knowledge of trademarks and impressed me with quick actions that probably have saved the day for me.

I hated to see him set off on his own, but I know he will do well because he so fantastic!

I cannot say enough good things about Harry Nelson and the Fenton Nelson legal group. We came to the firm to get an assessment of our project. Our previous lawyer had said "no" to some aspects of our project involving healthcare rules and requirements, but had no answers or suggestions for what we COULD do, which was going to kill the project. In contrast, Harry and his group offered creative solutions and did a great job of analyzing the options and presenting us with choices. He basically helped rescue a project that would otherwise likely have been headed for disaster or death. Trustworthy? Check. Incredibly trustworthy. Responsive? Check. Kept me informed? Check. Knowledgeable? Off the charts!

I met him while he was working as an Agency Attorney at the California Gambling Control Commission. He is sharp, creative and quite a problem-solver. After our first meeting with him, we were able to understand that Commission’s concerns and address all of the Commissioners’ concerns. Safe to say we got what was becoming an elusive approval for our project. Adeniyi seems to have the right combination of experience as a regulatory agency attorney due to his background as a business transactional attorney prior.

Kevin helped me through an eviction attempt by one of the most prolific eviction law firms in the city; which due to him was unsuccessful. From beginning to end he found every fault with the filings from the landlord's attorney's. Due to him I was able to stay for as long as I needed at the place I was facing eviction from; then he also gave me pro-Bono advice for my current arrangement.

I can't recommend Kevin highly enough. He helped me through a legal difficulty with great success. I appreciated the time he took with me to really understand the case and do the research involved. He kept my expectations realistic, but the outcome far exceeded them. He was friendly but also professional. He was so sharp and tough that I actually felt a little bad for the other side, which was woefully unprepared by comparison. His bill was reasonable under any circumstances, but especially considering the great job he did for me.

Michael has represented our Irrigation District since the late 1980's. His representation has been superb. He has helped us navigate, quite literally, through much "troubled water" -such as the breach of the Truckee Canal at Fernley, Nevada in 2008. He possesses a rare command of the law in California and elsewhere. His areas of practice, exercised on our behalf, have included administrative law, environmental law, property law, and water law. He works hard and keeps his client informed. His is a great courtroom presence accompanied by unfailing respect for the judiciary and the practice of law. He is admired and respected by his peers.

Michael has been the lead water attorney for the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District for more than 20 years. I have personally worked with Mr. VanZandt for more than 17 of those years. He has been a wonderful human being to work with in the trenches of the legal world. He is thoughtful, organized, and listens to the voice of those who hire him. He has led us through some very tough times in the fight to protect and preserve the water rights that are so important to our way of life in western Nevada. He also led us through some serious challenges by the Department of Justice against our organization and some employees. Gratefully with Mr. VanZandt's leadership and knowledge we prevailed. If you need legal assistance in water or other environmental issues, Mr. VanZandt is your guy.

In 2010, I experienced unbearable (and unlawful) workplace harassment and filed a Workers Comp claim which my employer promptly denied. I sought help from attorney Kenneth Sheppard to who I will be grateful for as long as I live. He was a terrific advocate and an absolute pleasure to work with. From my very first contact in 2010 through my most recent one today, Kenneth was and consistently remained kind, patient, effective, and efficient. He was either readily available to speak with me when I needed it or promptly returned my phone calls and emails. Kenneth did everything needed to get me excellent results. He is not only knowledgeable, skilled, level-headed, and realistic; he is also calm, reassuring, gracious, and generous. For example, after my Award was finalized, my employer took an unreasonable time paying my medical bills. Though Kenneth would not be specifically compensated for it, he filed a Motion with the WCAB and I eventually got paid. With Kenneth help, I was able to return to work with my dignity intact. Because I have some background in Workers Comp claims and understand the demands, I know Kenneth’s level of performance to be exceptional. Also, as a trained attorney who has met a few in my days, I can say without a doubt that Kenneth Sheppard is the finest among us.

I needed a professional and highly communicative attorney to review a critical business contract on short notice. A co-worker suggested Artin's services on Thumbtack, so I reached out. I like to communicate almost exclusively by email and text, which he was terrific with. Likewise, Artin was available quickly when I had follow-up questions. His demeanor is friendly and professional. Most importantly, he was extremely competent. I have done a lot of ad-hoc legal work myself and can recognize when someone knows their stuff. We hired Artin to add an amendment to our Owners' Agreement. We could not be more satisfied with his work, his expertise, and his communication through the process. We told him about the changes we wanted to make in our Owners' Agreement. He came back to us with a timeline and budget and stuck to both of them. Artin was very communicative throughout the process. Letting us know when to expect responses and drafts. Throughout the process, we felt that Artin was a part of the team. He was great at listening and providing us with professional feedback. We always felt like we were in the driver's seat and he was guiding us to our destination. At times we would defer to his experience, where he would help frame things in a way that would allow us to decide on how to proceed. In short, it was a collaborative work-relationship that worked well for us. 100% would work with again. 100% would recommend.

We had been searching for an attorney to represent us in a dental malpractice case for 6 months . No one would take our case, we were very discouraged. My husband had been suffering with constant pain from a tooth that had been worked on 3 times. We finally decided to try another dentist. We discovered, that our pervious dentist had neglected to inform my husband of a broken instrument left in his tooth which had been causing the pain and discomfort he had been experiencing.. My husband was told the tooth had to be removed and he would need a implant. Without any hesitation, Mr. Ferraris represented us and we settled out of court. Thanks to our attorney Mr. Ferraris, we were able to get my husband's implant taken care and he was compensated for his pain and suffering. We highly recommend Mr. Ferris for any legal need.

Though officially a new attorney, Jennifer's many years in the legal industry and experience working for large firms and the US Attorney's office in the past are what made me feel comfortable. I was in a landlord tenant discrepancy when I first contacted Jennifer. I originally went to her to seek mediation services. Our first conversation, she was very professional, engaged in active listening, asked several questions to understand my conflict, and asked me what my objectives were. I immediately felt as though she really wanted to guide me in finding a resolution to my problem. I loved that at the end of our call, she did a brief re-cap of our conversation and clarified any questions. Especially when there was emotion involved in the conversation, which I assume is common when dealing with conflict. Our game plan consisted of me meeting my landlord first before she would reach out to him. Which brings me to another point. In our first conversation (still as a mediator) she helped me create a game plan I was comfortable with. My first correspondence with my landlord after speaking with Jennifer was through email. He was very aggressive in his tone. I was able to refer him to Jennifer as a tool to not engage in unpleasantries. After forwarding his emails to her, she contacted me just to make sure I wanted to move forward with mediation. She informed me that once she contacts him, she can not represent me in future. I didn't like that idea, so we agreed to have her represent me. Her conversation with my landlord was pleasant and professional. The follow-up and feedback I received from both parties was positive. Since Jennifer represented me, the conflict was handled very professional, but informal- all by phone and email. Even to a point where my landlord has considered using her for representation for himself. My landlord and I have yet to have another discrepancy since I've involved Jennifer, my attorney, into the situation. His tone with me has changed and is no longer trying to take advantage of me. I have already recommended her to several friends as a mediator or attorney. I will absolutely use her services again in the future. I trust her completely. I appreciate her level of professionalism and follow-up. I highly recommend her services.

First let me say that I am 69 years old, mostly retired business man and during my business career I had a reasonable amount of experience with attorneys. In point of fact at one time, we were involved in an anti-trust action which spread over 6 years. That was one contact with a large law firm, which did an outstanding job for us. Mr. Flashman was referred to us by another firm. We needed an attorney to draw up referendum petitions for a citizens group which I headed up. It was essential that this be done quickly and correctly. He within a few days had the material to us. During this time he literally gave us an education on referendums, the pitfalls and possibilities to make sure we could gather the necessary signatures. That we were successful was in no small measure due to his expertise. He along the way was able to give us counsel on environmental issues and other challenges. He has had a lot of experience with the referendum process, and it was so helpful. At the end of this successful process, we elected to enter into negotiations and eventually reached an compromise agreement with the developer. Mr. Flashman became our attorney in drawing up the legal document for this agreement. All along the way with was a period of about 8 months, he was on a very timely basis able to give us excellent advice. I could not give a higher recommendation to anyone than what I offer for Mr. Flashman. On top of all of this, he fees were very reasonable, which for a citizens group always presents a problem since funds are very limited. Words can not explain how lucky I was to have found a criminal attorney as good as Joe Rogoway. A situation led to my fiance, my roommate, and myself facing numerous aggrivated felony charges. Joe was my only hope against these aggrivated felony charges. My immigration status in the US was in jeopardy of Deportation, and whole life and future were now at the mercy of the criminal justice system. Joe was extremely educated and experienced with every one of my felony allegations, spanning from felony cultivation, felony possession with intent to distribute and felony possession of a stolen firearm, along with others. He was sensitive to my situation, and even assisted my co-defendants in finding suitable representation. Joe communicated with my immigration attorneys and very professionally navigated the whole fleet through our legal process. Joe was not only successful in getting me the best possible outcome (which most people didn't believe was possible in my situation), but also played the role of my therapist. Joe always found a way to be there for me and communicated with everyone from my attorneys to my family. Over all I truly believe Joe Rogoway is the BEST criminal defense attorney in CA, was underpaid for everything he did for me, and anyone facing criminal charges would be lucky to retain his services.

What a Government Lawyer Can Do for You

A government lawyer specializes in legal issues related to government policies, regulations, and disputes involving public entities. Whether you are a private individual, business, or government agency, a government lawyer provides expert guidance on navigating the complexities of government law. These attorneys handle cases ranging from constitutional law, administrative law, regulatory compliance, and government contracts to defending or challenging government actions.

Government lawyers help individuals and organizations understand their rights and obligations under the law, represent them in disputes with government agencies, and assist in matters of government contracting, procurement, or public policy.

When Should I Hire a Government Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a government lawyer in several situations involving government regulations, compliance, or disputes. Common reasons to hire a government lawyer include:

  • Government contracts and procurement: If you are bidding for or negotiating a contract with a government agency, a lawyer can help ensure compliance with federal, state, or local contracting rules.
  • Regulatory compliance: Businesses operating in highly regulated industries (e.g., healthcare, finance, environmental sectors) often need legal guidance to comply with government regulations and avoid penalties.
  • Government investigations: If you're being investigated by a government agency such as the IRS, SEC, or EPA, a government lawyer can help defend you against allegations or negotiate settlements.
  • Challenging government actions: If a government agency has denied a permit, license, or benefit, a lawyer can help you appeal or challenge the decision in court.
  • Constitutional and civil rights issues: If you believe your constitutional rights have been violated by a government entity, such as in cases involving free speech or discrimination, a government lawyer can help you seek justice.
  • Public policy or lobbying efforts: If you are involved in lobbying or advocating for policy changes at the local, state, or federal level, a government lawyer can provide legal advice on compliance with lobbying laws and strategies for effective advocacy.

Hiring a government lawyer early in the process can help you navigate complex legal frameworks and avoid costly mistakes when dealing with government-related legal issues.

What Does a Government Lawyer Do?

A government lawyer provides a wide range of services that cover interactions between individuals, businesses, and government entities. They can:

  • Assist with government contracts: Helping clients navigate procurement laws, drafting contracts, and resolving disputes related to government contracting.
  • Provide regulatory compliance advice: Offering guidance on meeting regulatory requirements for industries subject to federal, state, or local laws.
  • Handle administrative law matters: Representing clients before government agencies, such as appealing administrative decisions, applying for permits, or defending against regulatory enforcement actions.
  • Challenge or defend government actions: Representing clients in lawsuits involving government agencies, including constitutional challenges, civil rights violations, or disputes over government decisions.
  • Negotiate settlements with government entities: If a government agency is pursuing legal action against you or your business, a lawyer can negotiate settlements to avoid costly litigation.
  • Advocate for policy changes: Advising clients on legal strategies for influencing public policy, including lobbying and drafting legislation.
  • Litigate constitutional issues: Handling cases related to the Constitution, such as First Amendment rights, due process violations, or unlawful government actions.

How Are Government Lawyers Paid?

Government lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: For ongoing legal matters, such as regulatory compliance or government contract disputes, lawyers may charge by the hour. Hourly rates can vary depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as drafting a government contract or filing an administrative appeal, some lawyers charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For clients who need ongoing legal support, such as businesses frequently interacting with government agencies, a lawyer may charge a retainer fee. This is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Contingency fee: In some cases involving litigation, such as civil rights violations, a lawyer may work on a contingency basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case.

It’s important to discuss fee structures with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid surprises.

How Much Does a Government Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a government lawyer depends on the complexity of the legal issue, the lawyer's experience, and their fee structure. Here are some general cost estimates:

  • Hourly rates: Government lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For specific legal services, such as drafting a government contract, flat fees can range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the nature of the service.
  • Retainer fees: A retainer for ongoing legal work with government agencies can range from $5,000 to $20,000 or more, depending on the scope and frequency of the work.
  • Contingency fees: In cases where a lawyer works on contingency, their fee is usually a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or damages awarded if the case is successful.

Be sure to get a clear estimate of costs during your consultation to ensure that you understand the fees associated with your case.

Top Questions to Ask a Government Lawyer

When hiring a government lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and skills needed for your specific situation. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What is your experience with government law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has substantial experience in handling cases or issues involving government agencies, regulatory compliance, or constitutional law.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services - whether by the hour, flat fee, retainer, or contingency fee - and request an estimate of costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your legal options and the likelihood of success based on your specific situation.
  4. How do you handle interactions with government agencies?
Ask about their approach to dealing with government entities and their experience with specific agencies relevant to your case (e.g., IRS, EPA, SEC).
  5. Have you handled cases like mine before?
Ask about their experience with similar cases and whether they have achieved favorable outcomes in the past.
  6. Who will handle my case?
Clarify whether the lawyer you are meeting with will personally handle your case or whether junior attorneys or paralegals will do most of the work.

How to Check the Credibility of a Government Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable government lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Review their professional experience: Look for specific experience in government-related legal issues, such as regulatory compliance, government contracts, or administrative law, on their website or professional profile.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Check online reviews and ratings on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s reputation and track record.
  • Ask for references: Request references from previous clients who have worked with the lawyer on government-related matters to understand their experience and effectiveness.
  • Check for membership in relevant organizations: Look for memberships in professional organizations such as the American Bar Association's Administrative Law Section or the National Institute of Government Procurement, which can indicate the lawyer’s focus on government law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with a government lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant information and documents. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed description of your legal issue: Be prepared to explain your situation, whether it’s a regulatory compliance question, a government contract issue, or a dispute with a government agency.
  • Relevant documents: Bring any paperwork related to your case, such as contracts, permits, letters from government agencies, or notices of investigation.
  • A list of questions: Write down any questions you have about your case, including the legal process, potential outcomes, and costs.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any relevant events, such as the issuance of government orders or interactions with government agencies.
  • Goals for the outcome: Be ready to discuss what you hope to achieve, whether it’s a favorable settlement, regulatory compliance, or overturning a government decision.

By being organized and prepared, you can help your lawyer understand your situation more quickly and give you the best legal advice moving forward.
