I don't even want to give one star to him. I've never seen an extremely sh*t lawyer like Leon E Jew before. His team is totally unprofessional and honesty to say, no one in his team is really doing their jobs. No one came out to be responsible when my case was severe and need some communication. That's why he was disciplined because of such bad and unprofessional service he and his team provided.

My family and I have had the privilege of working with Brian Lopez on our journey to legal residency in the United States, and our experience has been nothing short of exceptional. We initially discovered Mr. Lopez through a Univision news interview and decided to set up a consultation. From our first meeting, it was evident that he possessed an unparalleled passion for immigration law, backed by a high level of expertise. When my family and I faced a distressing situation, Mr. Lopez promptly identified our eligibility for a U visa. He guided us through the complex immigration process with utmost professionalism and genuine care, making sure we understood every step. A couple of years after receiving our U visas, we were able to transition to applying for legal residency. Nearly two years later, I am ecstatic to say that we are now green card holders, a reality that would not have been possible without Brian Lopez’s exceptional legal assistance. Regarding the negative reviews you may encounter online, I urge you to take them with a grain of salt. Mr. Lopez has openly addressed these allegations, noting that they are part of a "review bomb" campaign aimed at discrediting him and his practice unjustly. As someone who has been through the intricacies of the immigration system with Mr. Lopez, I can vouch for his high ethical and moral standards. He is not just a lawyer to us; he has been a steadfast advocate and a trusted advisor. My advice to anyone facing immigration challenges is to set up multiple consultations to compare your options. Include Brian Lopez in that list and trust your gut feeling. From my experience, you will find his credibility and passion for his work instantly apparent, setting him apart from the rest. In summary, Brian Lopez comes highly recommended for anyone in need of an immigration lawyer. His dedication, expertise, and ethical integrity make him an outstanding choice.

I hired Brian in 2017. He did not mail my documents to immigration in 2020, causing a delay of almost one year. Brian and his assistant were dismissive about my concerns until they realized they had archived my documents in my husband’s file! Brian is being investigated by the state bar and is hiding from being served so please stay away from him.

I was working with this lawyer about getting my wife legal status. This lawyer sent my wife to Mexico and informed her that she had an appointment. Well guess what happened. There was never an appointment made for her. Now she has been in Mexico for 3 months with no word. We have tried multiple times to get a hold of Noemi and we have been pushed around for 3 months by her staff and given the run around. All she did was make sure that she got paid 3 thousand dollars up front and for the past 3 months "Our" lawyer has not been available to give us an update. I would heavily not recommend this type of service for any one. We keep calling her offices and they keep telling us that she is not available. They keep telling us to make an appointment with her and when we do try to make an appointment they tell us she is not available. Beware of giving this lady any money up front. She has made my life miserable for the last 3 months. She left me here as a single dad with 2 daughters. All she had to do was her due diligence and what she had promised. Why would she send my wife to her "appointment" without there ever being an appointment. Beware you have been warned. Now I need to get a lawyer to help me get answers from my original lawyer. I just called today and no answer. My emails go un answered as well.

SWithout the superb knowledge and ethics of Ms. Adams my life would be empty. My husband was serving time (almost 2yrs) in Federal prison and was innocent. His public Defender had no compassion and chose to not believe that my husband is a citizen. One phone call to Ms. Adams and he was released from prison within 24 hours. Accepting my phone call after hours and going above and beyond to rectify this huge mistake will never be forgotten. We now have a wonderful family and 3 beautiful children. After speaking with several attorneys and wasting too much money on attorneys that were afraid to debate the fact my husband was serving time due to a mistake I was petrified of the thought after his 10 year sentence was up and then getting deported I would never prove his innocence. The very first call to Ms. Adams was a life changing call. Its sad you always hear about the criminals on the news that do violent hurtful crimes but its a shame the news does not report about a wife with a 3 year old was told from a San Diego public defender she never returned my call to view the documents i had because her head was a mess due to a death in the family. I myself felt as if i also lost the one i love but i had to get up every morning and report to work and take care of our son. However, the day my husband was released she did walk up to him and hug him to apologize and make sure to tell us she did feel horrible and if we ever need her please do not hesitate to call her. Amazingly, i called her a few weeks ago. My husbands ssn got flagged yet again for a hold. Cant seem to understand why she doesnt remember us nor try to help. AGAIN, one phone call to...yes..you already know Ms.Adams. Again she returns my call, still remembers us from over 11 years ago. States she is extremly busy however she will help us. Once again, Ms. Adams knowledge, compassion and work ethics will keep my family safe from these horrid mistakes. Knowing she is the one who holds my familys destiny in her hands i can rest assure this issue will be resolved.

I had to hire a New lawyer that did sent me every copyright of every paperwork that was being sent to fight my case. I really admire, such a good lawyer (Zhou lawyer) how to recruit such a super bad front desk assistant, the attitude is extremely unreasonable, the guests have not said a few words, they began to be impatient, never wait for the guests to When you are finished, just hang up. Ok, I won’t talk on the phone. I will come to see it with my friends. I won’t say hello after I met. I will sit in front of the porridge and eat at 11 o'clock in the morning. Miss Front Desk, I ask you to eat. Breakfast or lunch? Just how hard it is to eat, how can it be so bad? The guest is standing in front of you waiting for you to look at you, you can't even say a word? I finally spoke for a moment: "What is it?"... Still the reluctant face, as if who owes you $100000! Ask her questions, she asks you again with a rhetorical question? You will not answer with a statement? Don’t you? Do you have this kind of service attitude? It’s too much, and I’ve never said “thank you, hello, you’re welcome, goodbye,” and the very basic polite language. I want to say how your parents educate you. I have a few friends who are also here, and it is no wonder that they have turned to other law firms. Some friends didn't dare to introduce them... Albert Chow, suggest you replace her ASAP!!!!

After the first lawyer dropped the ball on more than one occasion, the judge assigned to our removal proceedings gave some friendly advice (when the lawyer did not show up due to a conflict of scheduling), "get yourself a new lawyer." As our case had complications from its inception, the majority of previous lawyers we interviewed wouldn't consider taking the case, period. Albert was different from the rest. His completely professional approach to our concerns inspired confidence from the first meeting. We fortunately, had found and chosen an experienced immigration lawyer who could get the job done. He kept us informed, didn't over promise or build up false hopes. Albert is a no nonsense, tell it like it is person. If you have common sense, then when he advises you to do something, do it Over the years, we have referred a number of individuals without a moments hesitation. In summation, I never believed the green card which was received from Homeland Security would have ever been approved. Albert Chow is the closest thing you will ever get to a professional miracle worker.

I asked Allan Samson for representation in a case of Asylum after reading his answers on www.baraban.org. Samson told me that my case would be pending with the immigration judge for years and I would have plenty of time to make payments to him. He seemed to care only about how much money he could get from me. He did not listen to me when I tried to tell him about my case. When I finally said that I wanted my case expedited, he seemed surprised to hear that I knew of such option and asked me how I would be able to pay attorneys fees upfront. I ended up going to a different attorney, who charged me much less and won my case in 2 months. I am glad I did not continue with Samson who failed to inform me about basic issues and cared for nothing else but his fees.

unfortunately this is not the lawyer to hire if you need someone to advocate for you in a divorce. lawyers are expensive and court appearances are scary so one hopes to be fully informed and have their options well explained as they go along. I trusted that he was the 'expert' as i have never divorced before. Mr chappell had a habit of making promises to me as his client which i see now he had no business doing. he was continuously unprepared and vague and if it werent for the fact that my judge is very good and fair i would have walked away with only a bill. i am still divorcing and had to fire him and hire a mediator on my own to try to get things moving. perhaps his other fields of speciality are ones he is better at but sadly i would never reccommend him for a divorce.

I’ve been Ms. Ja Suh’s client and I don’t normally write reviews. But when I read the one review previously posted I thought something was terribly wrong-not with Ms Suh but with the author of that review. Ms Suh has always returned my calls and done so mostly on the same day. She copied me on all written communications. She gave me copies of all the pleadings. Most importantly, she recommended the right experts (forensic accountants) and the best mediator possible. When in the court house in Santa Ana/Orange, not only did every attorney know her, heck, even the bailiffs knew her by her first name. Best of all were the results: I won hands down.

This attorney has no business practicing family law in Orange County. Made a huge and very costly mistake of trying to go with a bilingual lawyer. First, Ja is nearly unknown in the family law community in OC. When dealing with any matter, you want a lawyer with an established reputation and professional relationship with the legal/accounting community. I spoke to over 20 firms when looking for substitute counsel and not one had heard of her or her firm. Ja is not cheap, but she is certainly not worth her pay. For her hourly, you can easily find a certified family law specialist. She communicated no strategy and was reactionary most of the case. She made horrible recommendations regarding RFOs. I found myself going over the same information 15 months into the case. We got absolutely nowhere with her and paid tens of thousands of dollars -- not even a single issue settled. Ja has no presence in a court room, spoke with no authority, and couldn't garner the respect from opposing counsel or the presiding judge. Tactically, Ja missed the mark big time. She is highly disorganized and missed the basics like notice of fiduciary duties, litigation holds, etc. She failed to depose the respondent. She subpoenaed key documents a year after filing, after the preliminary forensic accountant report was drafted. She failed to provide the accountant with court orders pertaining to income and records of key money. After switching attorneys, it got even worse. Her office delivered a file that was in dismay. Highly unorganized and missing large chunks of files. Missing most of the outbound correspondence to opposing counsel. I had to pay new my attorney hard-earned money to organize the mess she threw in a box. Talk about unprofessional. She is pleasant to deal with but is an absolutely horrible family law attorney.

I am writing this review to express my extreme disappointment with the services provided by immigration attorney Lina Alta. It is with great frustration that I outline the significant shortcomings and unprofessional conduct that I experienced throughout my engagement with Ms. Alta. Despite my trust and the substantial financial investment of $8000, Ms. Alta failed to fulfill her professional duties and responsibilities. Her neglect caused my application process to expire, leading to significant personal and financial repercussions. Additionally, Ms. Alta displayed rude, arrogant, and disrespectful behavior, which added to the distress of an already challenging situation. Furthermore, Ms. Alta misled me regarding crucial aspects of the immigration process and displayed a lack of diligence in addressing important details, such as the update of my home address on the application. Given these distressing experiences, I am compelled to caution others against engaging Ms. Alta's services due to her unprofessional conduct and failure to deliver the expected level of service

I'm convinced that Ann Riley is the most ethical, competent, and intelligent divorce attorney in the Bay Area. I interviewed a lot of lawyers and many of them were simply not confident about the law and fairly apathetic. Ann really cares in a way that is helpful. She doesn't waste your time, she is able to be firm when needed, and is extremely logical. She has a good understanding of the family court system in SF. Opposing counsel was unprofessional and difficult and Ms. Riley refused to engage, knowing that it would cost me more if she did so and that it wouldn't get me any further ahead. A lot of attorneys like to engage in time wasting activities because they know they can get away with billing you for them - there wasn't a single line item in Ms.Riley's bill that was questionable - she deserved every penny of her retainer. I wish I had met Ann under different circumstances but I'm really grateful to have met her when I did. She gives me hope that there are still decent and good people who find value in doing the right thing.

Right from the first time we met, I knew I was going to have a positive experience with Atty. Rowel Manasan. He is very knowledgeable, upright with the subjects in discussion and applies his best approach to my needs. I did not feel intimidated by his approach to my legal needs. It is equally very important to me that he was highly recommended by my insurance agent because I am easily cautious of lawyers having heard so many painful experiences of some friends with their own lawyers. I believe I am in a propitious ground because the best part in working with Atty. Manasan is his consideration of my ability to meet the necessary legal fees while getting my money’s worth. All the legal papers prepared were professionally presented and completed. These, plus his personal touch with my estate planning showcased his niche in the industry. Trustworthy and a promising lawyer are the most favorable attributes I can say about Atty. Manasan.

Didn't bring a single paper to court, didn't say a word during the trial, only made excuses to the judge for the lack of documents. The judge gave time to submit the documents, but he didn't even attempt to send them, on the last day, everything had to be done personally. He didn't attempt to contact the government lawyer, and on the day of the trial, it turned out that both he and the judge agreed not to close the case, but the lawyer didn't even try to suggest it. The case itself was merely translated into English using the cheapest translators who couldn't even properly punctuate. Didn't send the court's response until the time for appealing the decision had passed, and when the immigration service made a mistake by not returning the bond and a complaint had to be filed, he just ignored it. So incompetent and useless that I got WoR solely due to the strength of the case. Essentially, hiring him was a pointless waste of time, nerves, and money. I deeply regret deciding to save money by hiring him ; it turned out to be a much greater loss.

We hired Daniel Huang to prepare and file an I-212 Waiver on behalf of my finance who was barred from re-entry for 5 years. We signed a contract with Daniel and Haven Law Group for $6,000 for the I-212 Waiver to be prepared and filed prior to my fiancé’s interview at the embassy. Daniel did also prepare an RFE for our K1 visa that was still in processing. After months of no word from him he said we needed to send another $5000 to continue his work for us. We did that and nothing came of it. Days before my fiancé was to attend his embassy interview Daniel told us that the waiver was ready we just needed to pay another bill (the original contract was for $6000!). When we opened the final bill it was for $26,000 or else we would not get anything from him!!! Daniel led us in circles and tried to get 6 times the amount of our contract!!!! In total he requested $40,000 from us. We ended up doing the I-212 waiver ourselves and he now refuses to reimburse a dime! Daniel took over $11,000 from us for 1 RFE that took one day to prepare. Beware!!

I would highly recommend Daniel Huang for your immigration needs. I'm currently work with Daniel on my U.S. citizenship application. My first contact with Daniel's office was via telephone in December 2012. I first called the office and worked with one of Daniel's assistants to set up a 1/2 hour paid consultation appointment. As I recall, Daniel was available to be seen just a day or two later. During the initial consultation, Daniel appeared knowledgeable and conducted himself professionally. I was seeking legal assistance because there are some unique circumstances surrounding my citizenship application that requires trustworthy guidance and advice. During our conversation, which was held in both Chinese and English, Daniel listened intently and kept notes on my file which I felt his office will be keeping for future references. Daniel adequately answered all of my questions during the consultation and properly explained steps I need to take leading up to the filing of my application. We concluded our first meeting and Daniel left me with options to either tackle the next steps on my own or return to him for continued assistance. After some contemplation, I emailed Daniel the next day to request that he provide additional assistance in the next steps on my case. I suspect that it was due to the proximity to the Christmas / New Years holidays, Daniel wasn't able to respond to my email until Jan 2nd. In his email response, Daniel confirmed that he will help and provided an outline of a plan. He also requested additional information from me and confirmed payment amount and method. Payment amount was per our initial consultation discussion. Next, we exchanged email a couple of more times. Now that we are not interrupted by the holidays, Daniel's email responses have been prompt. So far, I am very satisfied with the service and advice Daniel has been providing. My case has some unique peculiarities and Daniel has taken it all in stride while providing the guidance, advice and assistance I seek. Will return for updates as major milestones are reached in my application process.

I would highly recommend the McDonald Law Firm. My father was hesitant to hire an attorney. He had A LOT of questions about the process, and they were very patient and responsive.

I know many lawyers who never charged any clients for reviewing their case documents before taking the case. But Grace Change charges a few thousand dollars for reviewing a potential client case documents. Not recommend.

It's a long story. How should I start. It's a painful and long story. My child's father was working overseas for 4 years. He was having affair with another girl who didn't know he was married with a child. They went to Japan for vacation. I didn't know about this until I couldn't find him for a week when he said he was at work. I stayed with my parents who help me take care of my son. I had difficult pregnancy and unexpected C-section and some complications. He was calling me failed mom and fat. He complained that I spent too much money on the CHILD. I was stupid and I didn't spend any money on myself. I'm a saver and a busy mom. I didn't have time for myself. He cancelled our joint credit card and served me with divorce paper one month after he came back from Asia. He took our house and took my stuff and jewelry and antiques..... after he got the U.S. citizenship. He was trying to kidnap our child to Asia. He was trying to take away my physical custody. He came me so much problems with visitation and late child and spousal support payments...He was always late during the visitation and left early. It was only 4 hours a week. He missed 8 times visitation. He called the child stupid. He didn't care about the child. He didn't want to pay. Grace MADE HIM PAY. Grace helped me a lot. Today I finally signed all the court papers. I got a good settlement with good child support. My child is not even 3 years old. He will be paying for a long time. The bad thing is father refused to pay for the child's college even though I proposed that he only pays if the child can't get financial aid and scholarships. He refused and he said he doesn't care about college education. He wouldn't put our child as a beneficiary on his life insurance (not even for 50%). I tried to save the marriage for our child for one year. I had to let him go because he is not caring about our child. His parents and he took me sign off my name on the deed one day without my prior consent. I was a nice person. The case is very complicated. I'm glad Grace could help me go though the most difficult part of my life. She is very knowledgeable and very professional. She is very efficient when she works. No drama. She always told me during the case that I was the boss because I hired her. She always wanted to hear what I wanted at different stages of the case. let's admit: couples change their minds all the time. As a lawyer, she made sure I didn't settle because of pressure, she made sure that I knew what I really want from the divorce, she made sure that I understand all the consequences of everything I do or say during the divorce. She is very protective and honest. She is straight forward, nothing hidden. Fees are very reasonable consider the amount of work being done. I did interview many top lawyers in Los Angeles County and Orange County because my ex filed in OC which was the wrong jurisdiction. Like everyone else: I want great lawyer to represent me and doesn't charge too much. I finally came back to Grace because she knows what I want, she would help me to get what I want: JUSTICE! The most important thing: she cares! Now I finally got what I want. I'm ready to move on and focus on myself and my child. Even after we closed the case, she still inform the client about the possible future problems and what to do when the clients run into these problems. She warned me for lots of things. I do have a small child with my ex. I didn't pay her until one year later when the case was closed. She gave me a big discount. She was very good in front of the judge when we went to the hearings. She made the other lawyer looked 'stupid', 'unprofessional', and 'unprepared'... I don't really want to use these words. The other lawyer was working hard, but not hard enough like Grace. She is a tough woman. I've see many happy customers during my one year experience with Grace. Staffs are nice too.

I worked with her on my green card in 2013. In the beginning, she was fantastic. Very helpful, very responsive, quick and really detailed. Until I get my green card. I had to return it, because there was a spelling error in my name. At the same time, she was in the process of leaving the Law Offices of BunmiI Awoniyi and opened her own office. From here on, working with her was a catastrophe. She did not respond to emails, did not pick up the phone, did not return messages. She had received all her money at this time so it matches what the other reviewer here says: once the payments were complete, she was invisible. I ended up taking care of the correction of my green card myself. To this date, I am waiting for some final paperwork that she said she usually sends out at the end of the green card application process which explains the next steps (removal of conditions, citizenship ..). The last three attempts to contact (phone, email) her were in early 2014 and have not been returned to this date.

My experience with Ms Manning was great. From the very beginning she explained the whole process to me and my wife, she was honest and gave us real answers that were correct and not sugarcoated. In hindsight this was very important as we have had issues with other legal advice. Her rates were very reasonable and she answered any questions that we had during the process. We will use her again in the future with becoming a US citizen. I would recommend Ms Manning to anyone that is wanting a good attorney to help with their immigration case, she is a very helpful person.

As soon as I hear this attorney's name, I get so irritated that I forget where to start on how unprofessional she is and how she does not respect her clients' time and urgency of their matters. I was working with this attorney on an immigration case and as soon as she received her money, she started neglecting my case. I was left in a jeopardy, she was not returning my call and emails, although I had an agreement with her that she will be working on my case until I receive my decision. I wonder how she has survived in this business while she does not provide a satisfactory service to clients. Having a business is not about ripping off people's money and then hiding yourself to fulfill the duties you are paid for. Work ethic is essential for every attorney. I really hope no one falls in her trap like I did.

Jeremy had the most aggressive, antagonistic disposition. When asking how many cases he had active in a monthly basis, his response was: "As many as I can get." This didn't seem to me a professional answer. I only found him because of the internet and his website was vague and outdated (2007) , so I decided to call for further info. If I had to choose between hiring him and living in the ocean, I would choose the ocean.

I wanted to write this review because I am no longer a 10 year old girl ; I am now 24 years old. I am an immigrant and came to the US when I was 1 year old with my parents and my brother. We came to Jeremy R. Frost for 5 years or more to become residents. . I remember telling my parents I didn’t like the lawyer, he gives you the worst vibe, he doesn’t care for his customers, he’s always late, hes almost never there, hes always cancelling appointments, & having us meet with his assistants, he was always upset mad, and was also rude to his workers, all he cares about is charging and collecting from his clients. I actually still remember his full name, & his face I am surprise no where in social media there is not one picture of him. Long story short in one of those mistakes, of him being irresponsible & not following up with the judge recommendations we all got denied, we went back to the office to talk to the lawyer Jeremy and he blew my parents off & he just walked away with his pockets full of money & last time we ever saw him. He wasn’t even sorry or felt bad for the fact that it was his fault why we all got denied. He didn’t try to help us. The only reason why my parents didn’t stop the process was because they had paid 20k to start the process. This still makes me upset till this day and I wanted to write this to warn everyone else before you try or even think of considering him, his not the lawyer you want to go with & if you really do trust your instinct you will know right away.

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
