24 years ago I was referred to Karen Lane law office by my new doctor that informed me I was 6 months pregnant sending me home with prenatal vitamins and a refund for an abortion. I never wanted children, never felt qualified to be a mother but there I was 6 months pregnant... Adoption was my only option and the only right option for this baby to be able to thrive. With Karen Lane representation, expertise and guidance, I was able in less than 3 months find the best parents I could ever have hoped for. Karen Lane worked her magic and delivered a miracle. Now 24 years later, I am amazed to discover this beautiful amazing young woman I gave up for adoption professionally handled by Karen Lane to this wonderful loving and caring couple that gave her everything I never would have been able to provide. None of this would have been possible without Karen Lane dedication and commitment. Thank you.

My husband and I were referred by our doctor to Karen Lane. I later learned that Karen has an excellent reputation in the field and now understand why. She made the process as fast and painless as possible. Only four months after hiring Karen, a birth mother responded to an ad she placed for us. Karen arranged for her to relocate to California for the birth. Karen eased all of our concerns about meeting the birth mother and working with her through the delivery of our baby and our adoption. The birth mother frequently told us how kind Karen was to her, and Karen was certainly patient with us. We wanted to maintain communication with the birth mother even after the adoption. We therefore appreciate the fact that Karen has been willing to keep in contact with us and the birth mother and has exchanged photos and medical updates for us. I work with many attorneys in my field, but none have the professionalism, expertise, and compassion that I have seen with Karen. Thank you, Karen, for helping us complete our family.

WARNING: My experience with Santa Monica Adoption Attorney, Karen R. Lane, was absolutely horrendous. Let me preface by stating that I am writing this review to save other adoptive parents the pain and suffering that I went through with this lawyer. This is not a vengeful review; it is a factual review. Simply put, she collected approximately $6,000. from me then immediately disappeared on a vacation for two weeks. Karen Lane made promises that she did not keep, she showed no interest in answering my questions and, straight out, requested that I not call her. Her conduct was unprofessional, dishonest and condescending. I have since connected with others, adoption professionals as well as adoptive parents, who have had similar (and much worse) experiences with Karen R. Lane. After terminating the relationship a few weeks in, Karen R. Lane refused to refund any of my money. I suspect that more people are not speaking out because or this lawyer's intimidating persona, not to mention the length of time she has spent in this profession and her connections within the adoption community. Steer clear, is my advise.

Stay away from Brian and his shady practices!!! My MIL who is a 65 was living in an apartment with black mold in the valley ( property management company was Golden Bee)and since the property management company failed to do their part to safely remove the mold, my MIL and her roommate searched for a contingency attorney based on low funds. She hired Brian Heit with Adept Legal Counsel PC- his old law firm is Heit Law Group. It was months of back and forth with the property management company, they moved out 7 months ago, and finally last month Mercury Insurance issued compensation and sent the check to Brian at Adept. The issue now is Brian said he sent the checks to my MIL and her roommate but claims they were returned back to his offices and when my MIL and roommate asked for more info like tracking info, etc he has halted all communication. Since then he has closed his Westlake office, disconnected his 2 phone numbers, and won’t answer emails or chats. I contacted him on social media and he blocked me after trying to find out how to obtain my MIL check. It’s like he took the $50,000 and walked off. My MIL is not sure what to do at this point. Mercury won’t reissue a check, I’ve tried to contact him on all social media platforms with no results. I looked at reviews for his old firm in Miami - Heit Law Group P.C. And it seems he has a history of scamming those who cannot pay up front. Filed a complaint to the CA Bar as well. My MIL and room mate were supposed to receive 16k each and Brian Heit was supposed to receive 18k. He now has all of it with no resolution. He has offices supposedly in Covina and Santa Cruz?

Brian Morgan Heit really saved me in a really bad situation. I was robbed while traveling and extorted with my credit cards. The credit card company tried to stick me with all the fraud charges of over $7000 dollars. After Mr. Heit contacted the credit card company they reopened the case Mr. Heit and he did not stop following thru with the case until the case was closed in my favor. I would highly recommend Mr. Heit and his firm they are very professional and personal. Thank you so much Brian Morgan Hiet you really saved me. Aloha Aja Oxman

Brian Heit has been helpful on a number of legal issues for me: business purchase and new business consulting, commercial property management, employee relations, family law and several contract reviews. Some of the issues were very stressful and emotional for me. He did a great job of easing my anxieties with his knowledge of the law, but he also did it in a way that shared his depth of knowledge yet still explained everything in "non-legal terms" that felt accessible. He is reliable, honest and a good listener. He also did a great job of explaining different options to me. So far, everything he has worked an has been resolved to my liking.

Mr. Clark's office was referred to me by another "respected" attorney specifically to get a critical step in my case (motion) accomplished. We could not move forward until this was done, so we needed the best. I was also advised by various people that if anyone could get/wanted something done in Riverside County, Clark could. Well, rest assured, the team came thru with flying colors and got my motion granted. So I wanted to pass the word around to anyone needing good advice and help. God Bless Everyone

As you might be aware of that the Immigration attorney should possess not only the knowledge of US Immigration Laws but the knowledge of languages (Alex is trilingual), and cultural and background issues understanding the client and his/her needs. Mr. Markman fits perfectly in this niche and does a great job doing it on daily bases. He won my case which was more than complicated. SCAM! 1 star is too generous for the service provided by Mina Tran. She obviously sells herself well on the initial phone call, takes full payment before doing a lick of work and then takes forever to get back to you. She sent me places that no longer exist for my visa as well as telling us to provide documents that aren't even necessary for what we needed. The customs officer laughed when we told him an immigration lawyer was the one who guided us. She always had excuses such as being in meditation or undergoing house renovations. She had the audacity to validate her fraudulent work and not refund us. I hope anyone looking to work with her reads this comment as well as all the other horrible ones and saves their time and hard earned money. Every bad review on here I'm sure is well deserved.

Had a bad experience with Tanawa lebreton she takes forever to get back to you if she even gets back to you at that. Reaching her by phone or email seems near impossible. We hired her to do my husband's I-130 I asked her if passport photos were needed since, I seen the area to place these photos on the application. She advised me that the photos were unnecessary for this application. After months of waiting for a response from USCIS they informed us that our case had been delayed due to lack of passport photos. Not only did our case get delayed one time but got delayed a second time when she moved offices and failed to inform myself and USCIS which caused important documents not to be delivered. So I had to send an additional request to have USCIS deliver the important documents that were needed. When I approached her with my concerns she simply reccomend I find another attorney with more staff. Highly unprofessional manners of conduct and communication would not recommend at all.

I hired Tanawa to help me in a case that was very complicated, went to meet several inmigration attorneys and everyone will charge me a fee just to let me know that my case was a lost one, that did not stop them to charge me the 100.00 dollars fee just to see me for 10 or 15 minutes...I almost gave up after spending 600.00 dollars with these other attorneys, (by the way, they always asked me for the money at front). so when I found attorney Tanawa Lebreton and she told me that I did not have to pay a fee I was very surprised, she did listen to me with out rushing me because of her time, she did review the paper work that I had, and she said that there was a chance. I feel very blessed that I got to meet her. She did her best on the first case that she helped me with, later she also did my mom's and now she is a permanent resident, she always keep me informed of everything that was going on....I have recommended her to several people and no complaints. I been bringing more people to her, she is very honest and never takes any money from anyone that she knows that they don't have a chance to apply.

What an absolute NIGHTMARE dealing with Money Hungry Hadley. This law office is just being used to get money out of ignorant immigrants. They are taking advantage of immigrants and exploiting their lack of knowledge for monetary gain. We had about 4 different attorneys touch our case in the span of 1 year. This high turnover rate caused obvious issues with communication and case information and we fell victim to this unfortunate malpractice. Ultimately, we received an RFE and Hadley's advice to respond did not relate to the actual request made by the officer. Her advice would have cost us over $10k ON TOP of the fees already collected by her office. This was not only an obvious "money-grab" but it also put our future of our family in jeopardy, IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC. I'm sorry to those of you who are using Hadley now because her monthly payments are convenient, but she is not working for YOUR success, she is working for HER OWN.

Total scam. Stay Away. They mishandled my case! On top of that they gave me WRONG immigration advice and proposals on how to proceed by paying them even more. THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR IMMIGRATION JOURNEY, JUST MONEY HUNGRY AND LAZY OVERALL. I got so many second opinions from 10+ other attorneys and researched the law myself (since I have a law background myself) and they were wrong. In the last 2-3 years that I dealt with Hadley Bajramovics' office they kept changing case workers and paralegals due to their high turnover rates. They did not look into the details of my case and kept transferring from case worker to caseworker that neglected my case. They ended up sending a Junior attorney to my interview who had no clue what she was doing or getting involved in. Eventually a lot of documents were lost and my case was submitted incompletely resulting in a RFE. They then and tried to charge me even for responding for a RFE, even though it was included in my package. Then, they wanted to include other forms and charge about $10.000+ on top of my regular payment. Don't let the monthly payment options and the free consultation lure you into working with them. Immigration is a very sensitive subject and you are dealing with a lot of vulnerable people. Please also research the credibility of their other reviews and check them out on Glassdoor. It is certainly not a company with happy employees to my observations. I am taking legal action in recovering my fees and getting them written up with the California Bar Association.

From my first interaction with staff at Hadley's office gave me impression that I came to right place. Hadley and her staff suggested me to go for family based petition for GC application for me and my wife. They gave me the proper guidance what documents I will need- so it made my work easy to collect docs . It was very easy to communicate with them for my doubts and queries. Each time they were very prompt to reply the same. As our applications got submitted properly we could receive our green cards just in 6 months period. We got RFE as one document was not submitted. It would have been avoided but I wont consider it as any major mistake or negligence as it can happen in any process. The staff at the office is very knowledgable, kind, co-operative and helpful ( every time gave me car rides as I dont drive). The overall experience- from the first consultation, preparing applications, suggesting proper translators, submission to USCIS -- was fantastic. Ms Hadley and all staff members-- A BIG THANK YOU to all.

Mr Sprouls did one thing 48 times- he used the only tool in his Lawyer tool box to buy clients , who had no other options, time. He advanced their cases to the 9th circuit court! These cases would have staggered out over decades to get to that court. BUT the Bush administration sent in 40+ judges to the San Francisco immigration courts and demanded that all cases be done in one year!!! He was brought up to the 9th circuit court and investigated. Their findings? "Mr Sprouls. Worked in the interest of his clients, had no financial gain in doing so, and is highly regarded by the courts and his colleagues." They couldn't let him off with nothing so he got sentenced to 1 day of classes!!!! The State Bar makes 80% of their budget on trying attorneys! They got wind of this action by 9th circuit and sent him to trial - $100,000. later they revised the trial judges findings - a one day class- and suspended him for 2 years - keeping all the $ and tarnishing Mr Sprouls reputation ! It is said " He who steals my purse steals nothing- he who steals my reputation steals all!" The State Bar of California has done both to Attorney Sprouls! The 3 people who overturned the judges finding - are so secretive that they didn't even sign their full names- the cowards - shame on the State Bar! I have had a number of people I know hire Frank Speouls to represent them with great successes!

A friend needed to consult with a lawyer about how to flee her abusive husband and i was blessed to be able to get her in touch with Joe La Costa after she'd gotten some potentially fatal advice from another lawyer. Instantly responsive, thorough, and so kind, Mr. La Costa answered all her questions and thought of many different aspects she'd need help with and gave her step by step advice. May very well have saved her life. Very generous and helpful, he gave her quite a bit of time and it was pro bono (no fee, voluntary) and on a weekend. Just wanted to help her. Wonderful, wonderful man, I can't say enough how wonderful.

Do not hire Joe La Costa or the person that works with him Carlos Paredes. They told us that they were going to stop the sale on the foreclosure. They promised we will be in the property for at least another year and then we will work on getting a loan modification at 1% rate for 40 years. He charges almost $2000 a month due on the first. It is the 20th of the previous month and he starts sending bills. He does not answer the phone normally unless is to collect the money. He did not stop the sale. Then after the property was sold, he said we could be there at least 6 months and since the property supposedly was not sold "legally", he will have the sale reversed. Well, these are all lies. Do not trust him or Carlos Paredes. He is also part of the scam. We had a court day because eviction proceeding started and he never told us. The second time we had a hearing is when he told us to be there, at that point is when I realized that he was a scam and extremely disorganized. The judge on various occasion told him to have some ethics. He has an extremely bad reputation with the judges. The attorney of the other party told me that they had another case in process with that Joe La Costa and his client also got a judgement against him. Now, I have a judgement for almost $12,500 and he charged me almost $8000. One time he told me he needed to file a motion asap, I had to go to the bank and deposit $330 2 days before court. In court, judge said there was nothing filed. I took the money out of the bank account so the check will bounce. He never said anything about it because he knew he got caught with his lie. He just wanted to collect more money. Now, 3 months after the foreclosure sale, the police came to evict us. We have our personal belongings in storage and living in a hotel. With the moving and hotel, we already spent almost more than $3000. Oh by the way, he is still sending bills via email. He never gave us heads up about having to leave the property. When you speak with him or Carlos, they always tell you not to worry about it, that is part of the process when it is not. There are just empty promises that are never delivered. Be careful with them. You will end up losing your house and costing you thousands of dollars.

I felt a little slimy with his tactics, but he got me the results I was seeking. Ge gets paid based on how long he can keep you in your home after a forclosure sale. Acts bumbling but the judges bend over for him because they feel he is incompetent and they don't want to see the client hurt.

I had a brief question regarding dual citizenship ( American and Filipino). Other lawyers are charging as much as $300.00 just to make an appointment. Counselor Evangelista answered my question definitely and authoritatively. he did not charge me for the visit even when I offered to compensate him somehow for his time. He said first visit is free. I work in forensics and deal with attornies. I could unequivocally say that Counselor Evangelista is very knowledgeable and very ethical. I will have no hesitancy recommending him to friends or consulting him again

Arthur handled my green card application professional and quickly. He walked me through the entire process and made it easy to understand. I was nervous about going to the interview and was thankful that he accompanied me and my husband. It gave me peace and everything turned out well. Babalik kami sa kanya in 3 months para sa citizenship ko. I recommend him to everyone.

My attorney Guohui Zhang has abandoned me. Not providing me the files that he has prepared for me. Not picking up my phone calls. And even blocking my messages and incoming phone calls. This constitutes a misconduct of law and theft of personal property. Let alone all the typos and mistakes that the attorney has made on my legal application forms.

With the help of Attorney Zhang, my family and I successfully obtained green cards. He is an upright and kind lawyer. I am pretty sure that he is a very professional and efficient lawyer. In addition, Lawyer Zhang has been following every step my family had taken in this long immigration process. Thank you so much for your help.

Amazing law office, they saved us!! After our business partner passed away his sister found an old note and sold it to make money off of our home. The next thing my husband and I knew our home was being foreclosed on. Either we faced foreclosure or pay $200,000.00 to the person the note was sold to. This was the home that we had lived in for 23 years and the home our kids grew up in. I called so many different attorneys with absolutely no luck. High end attorneys in Beverly Hills, orange county and some attorneys that were referred to me. Every one one of them was clueless as to what could be done to help us, they had absolutely no answers! We literally were losing hope until someone suggested we call Claudia and Juan which was the best thing we ever did!!! They were not taking anymore clients at the time but they agreed to squeeze us in. Not only did Claudia have answers she had options several of them! When no other attorney had any solutions for us Claudia and Juan had several and reassured us they would not let us lose our home. They took our case and did an amazing job for us!! Court cases had became more difficult because of COVID but that did not stop them from doing their job and in the middle of a pandemic they were able to settle our case! We settled for a much smaller amount with the person holding the note so the foreclosure was stopped. Claudia and Juan also got us back $50,000.00 from our business partners sister who had started the whole mess!! Claudia and Juan were always in contact with us working late into the night to take care of our case. They settled our case just in time for us to take advantage of the low interest rates. They saved our house, got us 50,000.00 back and we were able to refinance our home so our mortgage payment went from $3,125.00 to $2,230.00. My husband and I got to know Juan and Claudia personally and they are truly great people who genuinely care about their clients and we consider them family! If you want a law office that is knowledgeable, truly cares about you personally and will work hard for you we highly recommend them!! We are forever grateful to you, thank you Juan and Claudia!!

Claudia Osuna charged me 400 dollars everytime I called her or she called me. She’d call me just to remind me I had court and charged me for those calls. I fired her and have been doing better in my case on my own without her telling me to basically stay quiet and not stand up for myself or my son. Do not hire her!!!! Waste of time and money!! She waits for you to tell her the day of court what has happened in ur case and gathers all information 30 minutes before going in the courtroom.

This law office was a god send. I initially went to a paralegal that tried to scam me. But after meeting with the attorney she informed me that I was a good candidate for an adjustment of status and I decided to hire her. Everything has been going good so far. I will update if anything changes.

Very unprofessional. She is totally Furad and scam please don’t hire here. She is not an immigration attorney. She has zero experience. I hired her to represent my fiancé case sadly she took my money and I did the entire paperwork by myself. She didn’t know to transfer a case from one embassy to another embassy. She give me wrong information from the beginning to the end. Typically the applicant making appointment for his/her self or the attorney of record. She made me to wait for a long time for no reason. She told me the embassy will schedule the interview. She was wrong. The applicant or attorney have to do it even I filled the DS 160 for my fiancé because she was extremely lazy to do it and did it once with a lot of mistakes.

I have taken on clients in my law practice where Ms. Sharp was the previous attorney. She may be a good advocate in other practice areas but Ms. Sharp is not a good immigration attorney based on my observations. Her filings were full of mistakes and the records demonstrated a lack of care for the clients and a lack of expertise.

A person does not have complete information, both professionally and in terms of the political situation of the country from which the potential client came. But then there is a certain familiarity in communication and the imposition of their own vision of the situation. This is due to the fact that a person who even receives a license in the United States and receives all the benefits of this country does not integrate into this country. And he continues to have some civilizational delusions. There is general information gleaned from the TV. In this sense, entrusting my case is risky. I do not recommend it. This is my subjective judgment.

About 5 years ago, I had to file for asylum. My case was very unusual and very difficult to proof ! I was recommended to Sergei. He started the initial preparation for my case. His legal work and strategy is excellent. I was granted asylum a few years later and my life has completely changed. I would recommended Sergei to anyone who needs help with any immigration matter. He is right on target and fights for your legal rights. Very trustworthy and caring !He is a blessing to have in the legal community Birgitt

Nadia and her team helped me go through an employment based Green Card process and she provided wonderful help. She guided me and the company through every step always keeping us informed of what to expect, next steps and the estimated timelines (which were very accurate). The process itself is very stressful and long but in the end it worked out great and I have my card in hand. I highly recommend her and her team!

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
