If you are thinking about applying for SSDI benefits on your own, let me offer some advice. My point of view is specifically for Florida as the process varies by state.
When I had to leave my job because of medical conditions, I decided to apply for SSDI benefits. This is something you can do onyour own, but applicant should beware. After speaking to friends who went through this process in other states, they unanimously told me to hire a disability lawyer to represent me. I followed their advice and have never regretted it. The benefit ended up being invaluable.
So looking on the internet, there are plenty of SSDI lawyers out there who can't wait to help you. I did initial consults with a 3-4 firms, but the Law Offices of Nancy Cavey stood out. When reading Nancy's profile, she tells the story of how she had to navigate the SSDI process with her family, and as a lawyer took on the charter to help others through what is a complicated, unorganized, extremely slow and some would argue arbitrary and unfair process. This commitment was enough for me to consider them for the running.
During my initial consult I spoke with Assistant Attorney Krysti Monaco. It was clear from the conversation how verse she was with ERISA (LTD) and SSDI processes. She spent a lot of time with me and answered all of my questions (and I do ask a lot of questions). What I liked most about this firm was I was speaking with an actual lawyer who gave the personal feeling that I was just not another number. The other firms did not have this hands-on attention. Nancy Cavey Law was the real deal.
So I am in my 60's and according to Google, getting SSDI benefits is supposed to be easier. HA! It took me almost 3 years to get my benefits, and that's with extensive medical records and multiple doctor recommendations. It was an awful and stressful period. The most difficult thing was waiting and being denied at multiple steps. I was constantly bugging Cavey Law for updates (I give them kudos for putting up with me) but they were in a rock and a hard place. The efficiency of SSA/DDS is out of their control. There was nothing they could do but wait, keep me assured and be prepared for each step. That is their real value here. I kept being denied benefits with what seemed to be a lack any real due diligence on SSA/DDS part. Cavey Law was right there to respond to each hurdle. Without delay! The 3 years that it took me, was due directly a result of the understaffed and inefficient SSA system. If it were not for Cavey Law it could have gone even longer or possibly never happen at all.
What you should also know. I had 3 years of back benefits on the table. Had I tried this on my own and failed, I would have had to re-apply for benefits and that back pay could have gone away.
In other words, benefits would be calculated from the new application date. This is another reason why you need a lawyer for this. There are so many prat-falls in this process it can be a costly mistake without one. The fees involved far weigh out the risks (IMO).
So good luck to anyone applying for SSDI benefits. If you want to maximize your ability to be approved, Nancy Cavey Law is the right business to have on your side. Especially in Florida

I will start off with my personal experience of saying that I did not realize that long term disability companies were only in the business of rejecting claims with the hope that you ultimately give up.
To take the time to fight them you need a team of legal professionals that have a wealth of experience in dealing with their tactics and can help connect the dots.

After our insurance company denied our claim for Hurricane Michael damage we learned about Phillip Warren and his staff. After hearing about our problem and how the insurance company had denied our claim he took the case and began on a course that ended in a very nice settlement close to the amount we had made a claim for. Ian Schatzman accepted our case regarding an insurance claim with our insurer when other firms wouldn’t take it. After our claims were denied, we needed to reroof to prevent further damage. Ian worked out an expedited plan to document the damage in a manner that would support his case, while adhering to our reroofing timing.
He communicated clearly, responded promptly and thoroughly, and shepherded us through the lawsuit process. His fees were very fair for a job very well done. Without his efforts, we would have received almost nothing for the damages we incurred. He was able to negotiate an acceptable outcome.

If you find yourself in the unfortunate situation in which you need to use the long term disability benefits that you have then please take your time and consider using Mr. Hill’s law practice. The policies that the LTD providers have can be challenging, confusing and quite bigoted. The team here however will go above and beyond to ensure that everything is taken into consideration, will explain everything in a full and clear manner and that all further communications with the LTD provider will take place through their practice. Furthermore, all the conferences that took place never felt rushed and left me more informed and educated by the time they were over. Patricia, Michael and Dernica in which I worked with always resulted in positive interactions and got back to me in a timely manner. Mr. Hill has the experience, took his time to understand the situation fully and was able to get my denied benefits restored. If I could go back in time I would have done one thing different though, I would have hired this practice from the onset of my LTD benefits instead of waiting until something went astray. As I have a feeling that with them involved from the start that the denial the LTD provider tried to get away with would have never been attempted.

If you only have a small amount of time to read this review, just know that Eric Sventek and his services are incredible and worth every penny!!!!!!!!
He truly fights for you and is extremely knowledgeable about how you need to best prepare your case to win. The Paralegal and Legal Assistant, Dorian, (who reviews and works the files so that they are ready for a hearing) is also a saint and has always responded in a timely manner.
By listening and working with them, I was able to win my rather complex case that I had been denied twice before by Social Security. I was awarded BOTH Social Security Disability AND SSI!
It is without a doubt that I owe them for this otherwise impossible victory.
I will be thanking them literally for the rest of my life.
But as for the full story of my very difficult case where it felt like the UNIVERSE ITSELF wanted this case to fail…
Initially, I applied for Social Security Disability on my own and waited around 8 Months before SSA actually assigned someone to START looking at my case (which, by the way, only happened after I had my Florida Representative contact SSA on my behalf).
The individual that SSA first assigned me was rude, abrasive, and literally hung up on me multiple times, so it wasn’t a surprise when I was denied even though I had multiple doctors who had written letters stating that I was permanently disabled and incapable of self-support.
Thus started the search for an attorney.
Initially, my Social Security Disability case was taken on by one of those large seemingly effective attorney firms whose billboard ads are all around town, but they didn’t return my calls or contact me after weeks (likely due to my rare illness making the case too complex on second glance).
I was then recommended to contact Eric P. Sventek at the Thomas Ueberschaer PA by a friend who had great success with them before.
Eric contacted us back within a few days and, after looking over my extensive medical files, was certain he could win my case even with how difficult it would be. I was really relieved since I’d heard from others that most attorneys wouldn’t touch my case due to my complex illness, young age, education level, and the fact that I hadn’t filed until many years after first becoming disabled in the army.
With every visit and conversation, it was clear that Eric and Dorian had remarkable preparation and reviewing skills, shocking me multiple times by how well they knew my medical records and the SSA system itself. They both kept me informed every step of the way, which gave me great peace of mind amidst this struggle.
But Eric also proved to be extremely adaptable in the face of unavoidable complications.
In my case, my SSA hearing was rescheduled TWICE. The 1st Time due to the judge needing to add more medical experts to the hearing and the 2nd Time due to one of the individuals in the hearing having a medical emergency.
There were also a few other speed bumps that really made me wonder if this truly wasn’t meant to be and if I was just wasting everyone’s time. I even told Eric multiple times that, win or lose, I was beyond thankful for the insane amount of work he had already done for me.
However, Eric remained committed and never once lost his unwavering support.
Then the day of the hearing finally arrived… and Eric was absolutely brilliant! He had an exceptional strategy, was succinct, persuasive, and dealt with all doubts against me in a masterful way!
(Which was doubly a relief for me since I have severe anxiety. If I hadn’t had his support, I probably wouldn’t have been able to say a single coherent word in my defense.)
As a result, because of him, I finally won BOTH Social Security Disability AND SSI!
It would have been impossible if not for Eric Sventek and his team.
Again, thank you so much to Eric and Dorian. Their empathy and extreme amount of hard work has changed the lives of my family and I.
I would recommend them to everyone who needs actual support and have been wrongfully denied so many times like I was!

Absolutely incredible experience with this firm. From the first moment I spoke to the receptionist to the final day of wrapping everything up, they brought ease and care to the entire process. I felt like I was part of the family and they cared for me beyond measure. It was about so much more than the actual litigation…they went above and beyond the call of duty and handled something that wasn’t even part of my case. One Friday night when time was of the essence, I was given someone’s cell number so that I could reach out over the weekend. On top of everything else, my insurance wouldn’t agree to finish fixing my car, and Mike and Alan took care of it all. Here I am calling from a playground crying and they reassured me that my kids would be in a safe car soon…this isn’t even something that they have to handle but they did. It was like calling my brother to help me out.
They took a really awful life experience and brought so much comfort throughout the process. Mike Finegan represented me through two car accidents that occurred, where the cases overlapped each other. In 2019 I was left with permanent injuries, and a totaled vehicle. Mr. Finegan and his team helped me through every step of the process. Funds for a vehicle were recovered expeditiously. Unfortunately, this was at a time where I was just starting trade school which is full time hours, while working a job. It greatly affected my ability to work in two physically demanding environments. Fast forward, I had to move back to my hometown due to Covid-19, and his team made sure I was able to receive care as everything re-opened. Due to the nature of trade school, when you miss hours/make up hours this can accrue an additional expense. Upon graduating he helped me navigate this with school admin, and I was able to work out an exemption. As this case was coming to a close I was in another car accident. Once again, a totaled vehicle, and worsening symptoms, this time at the start of my career. Mike was very realistic with what to expect since this was a 2nd accident. Navigating 2 car accidents and treatment for pain (especially in your early 20’s) is not for the faint of heart, but Mike and his team truly put my mind at ease. They answered every question I had, were thorough about every step of the process, and made sure I was confident with every decision I had to make. I felt that I received the care you would get if you were a family member. The last 5 years of my life were incredibly challenging, but I am beyond thankful for the care I received working with Mike and his team. As I read the reviews below I don't believe that I can top the high praise that this law firm has received, what I can do is tell you that this firm ended up co counseling (took over) from my original attorney in the middle of the case. Robert Johnson was short of spectacular, he literally hit the ground running. Extremely knowledgeable and quick on his feet. As a client you should always want the meanest/ nastiest kicking mule that will have your best interest in mind. Robert is that attorney, during some of the proceedings to watch Robert was extremely impressive. As he strategized with his team and explained it to where I could understand it made me feel at ease. Robert was able to get a settlement that was well past my expectations and couldn't have been happier. His staff including but not limited to Rosa was extremely professional, Rosa was my main contact and she was absolutely amazing through this process. This was a huge undertaking for them to take over like they did and they did it like true professionals. If you need a kicking mule do not hesitate to call them. You will not be disappointed.

I called his firm and sent over documents for him to review. He was the only attorney who actually called me back and discussed my case. Unfortunately my case was not what he handles but, I had a consumer law case against a car dealership he gave me some great information that I was not aware of that made my case stronger,explained a particular statute to me and gave some referrals. Even the office staff who take the calls are educated and know how to answer a call. Not very common today when I have called other offices. You can tell just from being on the phone with him he loves what he does and care about his clients and the bestoutcome.
