I was selling a small piece of vacant property to a neighbor I've known and trusted for years. The property wasn't worth much, but my neighbor and I both wanted to make sure all the paperwork was done correctly. We contemplated printing our own documents off of a website, but I've heard too many horror stories of things going wrong years later with the sale of property. So, wanting to make sure my neighbor and I didn't accidentally mess up something in the paperwork on our own, I hired Ms. Fox to handle the closing. As it turns out, there were so many documents we would have never known needed to be signed and notarized, let alone submitted to the county clerk. Ms. Fox and her assistant Alisa were respectful of the fact that some neighbors still operate on handshakes and they didn't do anything to turn the situation into a contentious process. We were able to close in about two weeks, and when we got to Ms. Fox's office, everything was perfectly organized and ready for us. She definitely knows her stuff, and she did a great job of explaining things to us in terms we understood. The whole thing took about 30 minutes (they had sent the documents over ahead of time for us to review). I appreciate that Ms. Fox treated us as though our time was equally valuable as hers. Her retainer was very affordable (in fact, I was expecting it to be a lot more). When I saw how much work she had done at such a reasonable rate I wondered why I had ever thought of NOT using an attorney. Unlike some attorneys, she didn't even charge us for copies of everything. I do a lot of research before I hire somebody or make a significant purchase, and I'll say this: save yourself time and money because I've already done the legwork. Hiring Ms. Fox instead of using those online forms or another attorney was a great decision.

Mrs. Dimitri was hired by our insurance company to represent us. I was fearful of an attorney not understanding our business and what we do everyday. This is absolutely not the case with her. Mrs. Dimitri brings a fine balance of empathy and aggressiveness to her job. Her meticulous attention to detail and fact is unparalleled. And I know her caseload is high, but she always makes time for me when I call or need to meet with her. Hiring an attorney to represent your company is scary. You don't know if they will put as much love and hard work towards it's success as you have but I can emphatically say Mrs. Dimitri does just that. Our case is not finished, but I know that she has done the absolute best job for us and recommend her highly.

Mr. Cohen was thorough, kept us informed of all the steps involved (and even asked us if we wanted to know all the steps!), good communication. Always willing to answer our nervous questions - very patient and calm. I thought litigators were going to be vicious from the start. He was calm all the way through and just used logic and law to smash the other guy to bits. Calmly, and was very good at calling people by their honorific. Your honor, Oposing Counsil, may I suggestion you look at it thus way. Very impressive.p

I hired Alanna as a consultant to help me with my first Civil Litigation Case. I was extremely impressed with her trial preparation skills. She was always responsive to texts, emails, and phone calls. She gave great advice and did what she said she would do with a reasonable if not fast time. She also had an excellent legal mind and understanding of the processes of civil litigation. I would recommend her to anyone seeking justice.

Mr. Brechner accepted my case and handled it with unquestionable effectiveness. His partner Mr. Arboleda is also someone I would recommend and found them both to be exactly what a client could hope for from an attorney. Hiring Mr. Brechner led to an outcome that was greater than I had expected. Because of the complexity of the kind of cases Mr. Brechner handles I would advise anyone that it is money well spent when hiring him. If you are considering not hiring an attorney for a case such as Mr. Brechner handles, your decision could cost you a lot more. Be prepared to supply a lot of financial information. it will be a lot of work on your part to get this information, but don't avoid doing it. The process is very involved but you will come out so much better from his services.

Currently going to them to help my company Revelation Lawn & Snow through a customer's complaints and criticisms due to impatience on the customer's end: yards take time, energy and care to grow in. Tom Andrews has professionally held my hand through this process even though the way I do things might be a curve ball for him. It is nothing him & his team is not able to knock straight outta the park with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

I need to come clean: I had to hire an attorney to handle my filing of Chapter 7 bankruptcy a year ago and I picked William Rhymer because he was the first bankruptcy lawyer listed in the Yellow Pages. But I should have bought a lottery ticket that day as well, since it was the smartest pick I could have made. Mr. Rhymer is a thoughtful, conscientious attorney who is also accessible and personable -- though based in Conyers, he always made time to see me in his Athens office when scheduled. He put me totally at ease during what was an admittedly stressful time for me, and both his friendly manner and attention to detail are attributes that every lawyer should possess in their field. I would recommend him without hesitation to anyone needing his assistance in bankruptcy proceedings.

Mr. Vaca is an amazingly talented, knowledgeable, and end very personal lawyer. He was able to tackle my very unique and difficult case with great confidence and ease. He not only was able to successfully resolve my case but he helped me devise a plan of action that would allow me to move with ease and confidence during the ordeal of the case. By nature I tend to be very nervous around legal matters, but i must say that Mr. Vaca made sure that I always had an answer for my questions and I was never in the dark. It was an absolute pleasure working with Mr. Vaca and I would strongly recommend him to any friends and family.

My husband and I went to Attorney Whitman for estate planning. She was extremely knowledgable and brought forth issues we had not considered but were glad she made us aware of. We got everything completed in a very timely matter (we were traveling to Russia and wanted this done prior to leaving and she accommodated us happily). We now have our estate in order and will return to her periodically if and when circumstances change and updating is needed. We recommend Elisa Whitman highly and without reservation.

A few years ago I started receiving letters from an impound yard about a truck I had sold to a friend a few years prior. Apparently he never put the vehicle in his name. The impound yard said that I owed $5795 for all the time that they had the truck. I had received a call from the city of Lansing, a year prior to that, asking if I wanted the truck. They told me if I didn't want the truck that they would dispose of it and not to worry anymore about it. A year later I'm receiving these letters. Anyway a friend of mine told me to talk to go talk to John, his office was right down the street in downtown Grand Ledge. He read over the collection notice and said that I didn't owe them a dime. For a very reasonable price he sent them a nasty letter, basically telling them where they could stick their bill. We didn't hear from the impound for a long time and then they started sending higher and higher bills and then a court notice. We took the notice in to John he told us not to worry. He sent a response to the court, free of charge, and the case was dropped. The entire staff is very friendly, helpful, and professional.

Our construction company, RRA Construction, had to sue a non-paying client and Thomas came as a referral from another attorney for our case. If you are going through or have gone through a case, then you would know how imperative it is to be armed with a winning attorney. Even though we were stressed out of our minds, Thomas reassured us. He helped keep us calm throughout the process. RRA Construction was impressed with Thomas's extensive knowledge and in utilizing his services, we have become a better company in the end. We have Thomas to thank for helping us with our case.

Winning is everything in this line of work. We hired Attorney Zelmanow for a business collections issue. he may have had it easy to win the initial judgment because of the evidence and lack of response from the defendant, but he did go above and beyond to get us awarded his fees as part of the judgment which was not easy. He kept us informed and set realistic expectations. All in all it is a win and that is what it all comes down to.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
