Attorney Sbertoli helped me many years ago after another dishonest lawyer failed me miserably. He helped me sue to recoup money taken by an unscrupulous contractor. I will be forever grateful to this kind, intelligent, and very honest man. Mr. Sbertoli refused payment saying that since my first lawyer took advantage of me, he wanted to show me that there are good lawyers out there. I will never forget Mr. Sbertoli's kindness or how hard he worked to help me with my case. He is a wonderful lawyer and a very ethical individual.

I am from Taiwan but have to fight a lawsuit in LA. Judy was recommended to me by my uncle because she just helped him to win another case and get back all his money. We never met, only communicate by email or by phone, but you can always feel her passion and profession. Judy is aggressive which is what I need, because the Taiwanese origined US bastard is very shameless. She is also very smart, knows well how to deal with different kinds of people. She won't use just the old and normal methods to get what we want. She is clear, even I know nothing about ligitation, she explains to me. Every job or work, she just makes it very clear. She is very kind and patient to clients. Well, finally she helped me to get the hard case settled, the best we can get. Thank you very much. Joanne

I would highly recommend Michael Berke. He was very efficient and didn’t try to run up any unnecessary charges. He was able to collect our money from someone who didn’t want to pay us. I would definitely hire him again if we ever find ourselves in the same situation (which hopefully we don’t).

My wife and I found ourselves in a terrible situation with a corporate landlord who was taking real advantage of us. He came into the situation with such grace, integrity and positive energy, what had become a nightmare actually turned into a saving grace. Thanks to David, we're moving away from renting and into owning our first place. Always available, always returns calls, an all around amazing attorney.

Chris Hunter makes the business of advanced directives and wills easy to do. He works hard to find what you really want and then makes it happens. To him, each person is an individual with individual wants and needs which should be honored. He was great to work with. I highly recommend him!

Many plaintiffs sue Florida defendants only to find that the defendant refuses to acknowledge the out-of-state court, much less pay the judgment arising therefrom. These plaintiffs are therefore forced to domesticate that judgment in Florida for enforcement. In fact, many Florida lawyers will advise their clients to ignore judgments against them from out-of-state on the mistaken belief that said judgment cannot be enforced in Florida against the Florida debtor's assets. The good news is that under Florida law, a judgment debtor must post a bond in the full amount of the judgment in order to keep said out-of-state ("foreign") judgment from being enforced in Florida just as if it were entered in Washington. In fact, getting a Florida debtor to do so is relatively easy, but doing so if you're not in Florida can be daunting. Enter Gary Olsen and his husband-and-wife firm. Gary handled my judgment enforcement case professionally against an exceedingly obstreperous defendant's counsel. Ultimately, after five years of litigation including three appeals, we prevailed. Gary stayed with the case despite having gotten way, way more than he (or I) bargained for, keeping me informed the entire time. Mine is one of the two published opinions listed on his website. Bottom line: Want your money from a Florida debtor? Call Gary!

I have been licensed to practice law in California since 1980 and I have served as a Chapter 7 bankruptcy trustee for USDOJ for ten years. Jim Hand has served as my attorney in a very complicated case involving the misconduct of developers whose actions led to the bankruptcy of one of the debtors who were assigned to me. Jim is a brilliant, thoughtful, and affable attorney whose preparation for the case was incomparable. His exceptional performance in court, and his command of the facts and nuances of the case resulted in a multi-million dollar recovery and a strong decision in our favor from one of the most senior and respected members of the Santa Clara County bench. Jim is an exceptional lawyer. And a "good guy".

Erika is an amazing professional. She dealt with my provident bank judgement pending against my personal assets. I was close to losing my property. She strategically settled the case on pennies on the dollar. Couldn’t thank her enough. She was highly recommended after my attorney sister in-law did her research on who to use to help me with my case.

In every instance, he has shown a marvelous grasp of current legal principles, and has the subtle ability to gain an edge for his client where none appears to exist. If you need someone who will fight for you, this is the guy. He is and will remain my attorney as long as I reside in California. Mick

He truly is both genuine & trustworthy. Mark will always tell you how it is, with compassion. He will never tell you what you want to hear - unless it's the truth.

Three years ago, I bought a car from a shady dealer. It ended up being a lemon and costing me thousands of dollars out of pocket. Not knowing what to do, I was referred to Mandy Spaulding Law. She quickly took action. Even though we could have gone to court and got damages, I really didn't want to drag it out. She was able to completely rectify the situation and make me whole, within a few short weeks, without litigation. Fast forward to a new bind I found myself in with a former employer. Again Mandy, took action. This time, I swear my former employers head was spinning, with his attorney almost complaining about how fast Mandy is with the full force of all your legal protections. I can tell you unequivocally, that if you need Consumer Protection, Mandy Spaulding is an excellent choice.

I barely had to disclose the facts of my case. He knew! He told me. He is so well versed in the HOA foreclosure and sale matters being litigated in the courts today that the answers to my questions are at his fingertips. He was able to respond clearly and concisely and quickly without time wasting my precious hourly fee monies on redundancy or confusion. This is his biz, he does it 24/7. He gave me the foundation on which to build my case even though he represents HOA's, and I'm a homeowner. He was so HUMAN! Michael gave me the names of two other attorneys to consult with, each of whom have helped me also. He even offered to answer further questions should I have any. You were 100% right with all the scenarios you offered up. Now I can choose which line of defense I want to present. Thanks toooo much Mr. McKelleb.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
