Mr. Rhoton came to us after a major loss on a case that should have never happened. He kept us in the loop and informed of every step along the way, even the possible bad outcomes that could occur so we wouldn't be surprised. However, we were quite pleasantly surprised with the success of our case and we couldn't have asked for a better lawyer to guide us, and stand by us during this extremely difficult time. He was awesome, clear, concise and didn't leave us till the job was done. Thanks again for an amazing job.

I looked into alot of lawyers for my daughter’s case. Most of them said nothing could be done or tried to charge huge amounts of money to take the case. I spoke with Loren Rhoton because the women at my daughter’s prison said that he is the best post conviction lawyer in Florida. I talked to Loren Rhoton and he really knew his stuff. His fees weren’t cheap, but I guess that’s okay because I wasn’t looking to save money, I was looking to save my daughter. Mr. Rhoton was aggressive in court and was eventually able to negotiate a better sentence for my daughter. I hope I never have to speak with an attorney again, but if I do, I will be calling Mr. Rhoton.

Anthony is THE BEST. I had a case where there was a lot of controversy and drama, and I was scared I would lose my job over it. Anthony helped me out, eased my anxiety and got my case dismissed the very next day after speaking with him. I would recommend this firm to anyone and everyone I care about who may be going through the same thing or similar. Please, if you have any other options, just choose this one and save yourself

Emily represented on a couple occasions, one being a divorce and another being relocation. I truthfully don’t know what I would have done without her guidance and representation. She is extremely knowledgeable in her field and helped me get the outcome I wanted. She made things so much easier for me, especially being so young and lost. She was available any time I had questions, and was straightforward with me on what to expect. I’d recommend her over and over again to anyone that needed council. She’s reliable, truth worthy and truly wants the best for her clients.

My experience with the law firm of Winderweedle Haines Ward Woodman P A, has always been nothing short of spectacular. My initial counsel of record was Randy Rush, a brilliant and kind Attorney. Upon his retirement, I was then directed to the good graces and expertise of James Doyle, a very dedicated and detail oriented Attorney whose wisdom respectfully resonates with one far beyond his years. A good listener, honest and a straight shooter. He has an integrity and dedication that continues to subscribe to the level of stellar service that Winderweedle has championed for years. Thanks so much, Winderweedle, etal, and James, for being the best!

While she was with Whibbs & Stone, she handled SSDI & SSI cases. She never checked her secretary's work. I wasn't automatically sent copies of any of her work product. I was just told, "It takes time." I needed a copy of my appeal which her secretary gave me. Apparently, she used precious work product as forms to make the work easier. I found part way through my claim sent to the Appeals Court that I had suddenly become an older man with problems. She said she would take care of it. Within 2 weeks I received a denial from the Appeal Court, and she dropped my case like a hot potato. After my paperwork was reviewed by two other firms, I was informed that she was incompetent and had given more info than was necessary. Her sloppy "form" habits didn't help. Since there were many mistakes made, I was unable to get additional representation elsewhere. Her inept represention caused serious depression and anxiety. Maybe she learned more. I would never use her to clean my home, let alone represent me in court. I am glad so many of you feel you got good results. I didn't file a complaint. I couldn't think of her or my case for a long time. I juat didn't work. I kept going into a deep depression.

I wish I had read the other reviews before I considered this person. This "lady" lacks all morals. Any "professional" in her field should know not to cross the line and seek out relationships with married and divorcing men. Worse even she preys on them. Hideous inside and out. No amount of basic legal knowledge could replace immorality and poor judgement.

Jill Warren was recommended to me by Tiffany Woodward. At first she was amazing, I fell for her enthusiasm, her determination and just enough slink to handle my complicated divorce. However her skulls were very short term. She was a very good show. Became more impressed with the opposing attorneys flirting with her. Was terrified to take my case to trial because she openly admired she was intimidated by the new judge. She ruined my life. My ex husband didn’t have too. Jill Warren’s lack of professionalism, knowledge and promises destroyed me. She made promises: a investigation into finances, witnesses, etc. I do not see how she sleeps at night. Do not fall for her initial service and promises, she is the worse mistake of my life. The law is definitely not 50-50 when Jill represents you…she destroys your case. 33 year marriage!! All I got was his debt and Jill’s bill!

Ms. VanVeen represented me in a probate manner. I was pleasantly surprised by the experience - I was nervous about hiring a lawyer because I thought the process would be very expensive and tedious, but Ms. Van Veen was very patient with me and explained what she was doing and why so that I understood exactly what was going on with my case. I hired him to assist me in a law suit over a year ago. I would call the office weekly asking for updates. I would be given the run around every single time. He was in court, or they were moving offices. When I finally got to speak to him he was annoyed and even used profanity when speaking to me. I have never met an attorney as disrespectful and unprofessional as him. I wrote him and email expressing my concerns and then he said I was impossible to work with instead of admitting his lack of communication. I would never recommend him and I hope No one ever goes through the waste of time and money I have gone through by hiring him.

A while back I hired Michael for a traffic(speeding) ticket. I hired him to get the points dismissed and so that I would only have to pay a fine. After meeting with him, he discussed this strategy with me that I had never heard of before. He said he had not argued this in front of a judge before but he felt confident in his argument. I agreed we should go for it! He seemed to be confident in his approach. Well, Michael got my ticket dismissed! I was SO happy and very grateful! Michael said the judge had no choice but to dismiss based on the legal argument he made. I was floored. Absolutely impressed. Michael is so creative and incredibly smart. He has a gift, that is for sure. I highly recommend Mr. Grossman and his firm, Cohen Grossman.

This office is absolutely here for your money. If you are not in deportation status you are put on the back burner. I cannot tell you how many times I had to call and get the ball rolling because we were forgotten. The communication skills are lacking. If you call and leave a message you expect a call, text or email back within a week. Many times there was NO response and I would have to call and remind them what we were waiting on. Bassey was never at any of our hearings because my husband was not a deportation risk. He would send a substitute. He also never read the file before we had an appointment. He assumed our case was one way, when in fact it was not. Then we would have to remind him what stage of the process we were in. They also wanted to close our case and start over when we were to the final stages of my husband getting his green card, so that they could charge us another retainer fee for a new case. If they know you can pay, they will milk you. They make you come into the office for senseless things. They had my husband take off of work and we met there and had an appointment at 3 and they were late and come to find out I literally just needed to sign ONE LINE on paperwork. They had stated the day before that we were to meet with the attorney and that never happened that day. I could have went by myself and my husband didn't have to take off of work. They make a big deal out of little things. They want you to run and jump thru hoops and then THEY do not follow up. It took us 7 years for my husband to get his green card with them. Granted there was Covid shutdown in the middle but after the courts opened back up they drug their feet to get the case in front of a judge again. I am sure that they take advantage of a very vulnerable population. Their clients are at their mercy and they are fully taking advantage of those people and their situations. Please take your business elsewhere, where the attorneys and staff truly care about helping you get what you need done and not draining funds.

Bassey Immigration Law center was recommended to me by a friend who is a former client of Attorney Bassey. He was so satisfied with the services they provided for him that he assured me i will get the same satisfaction. Bassey immigration law center in my opinion is the best immigration law firm in the United States. They showed me that they were not interested in the money but rather in performing a humanitarian service. They kept me informed at every step of the process, and they have very excellent customer service from the receptionist, to their Paralegals to the Attorney. They are always available to answer all my questions. I had some difficulties with the finances and they were very understandable and flexible. They showed me they were more interested in making sure that my rights were protected than they money they were going to receive from their services. They have the fairest and most moderate of legal fees for the kind of satisfaction they provide from their services. I have friends who have spent over $10,000 dollars in legal fees to other law firms for immigration related purposes and still have not being able to get their immigration related relief/benefits, Bassey Immigration law firm charged me a small fraction of that amount and i have received my immigration benefits with full satisfaction from the process they undertook. Choose Bassey Immigration law firm and i can guarantee you that you that you will be satisfied and you will receive your immigration benefits. They are really humanitarian and will fight for you till you are satisfied and have received your immigration benefits.

I used The Fab Law Firm to file my divorce and was quoted a price of 3,500 with a max price of 7,500 if we needed mediation. I paid the 7,500 upfront just in case. The case ended up not needing mediation because the ex-wife and I were able to reach an agreement on our own, which we sent to our lawyers to draft. In total I spoke with my point of contact less than 10 times on the phone and less than 20 times via email. I was charged over 6,500 dollars for the work because they charged me for every email they sent to me and or the other law firm, and at times sending multiple emails (conversations) and charging for each response. I am not sure of many of the items I was charged for because it was just shown as hours they logged for work done on my behalf. I really don't understand all of the work that was done because the ex and I wrote our own agreement and just needed it drafted into legal form and submitted. The lawyers in my case didn't negotiate or write any agreement on my behalf, they simply took the agreement the ex and I made and put it into form for the courts, submitted it, and we were done, but somehow my charges still reached over 6,000 when I was quoted 3,500 if we didn't need mediation. In addition I was giving access to a portal to communicate with them called CLIO, however they were very unresponsive and hard to contact there. My case closed July 16, 2024 and I am now waiting for a review before the remaining funds are returned to me. I was told that Felicia has 30 days to review the file before returning the retainer. However I spoke with them today (Sep 19, 2024) over 2 months after my case has closed and was told that she has now been tasked with doing the review but she hasn't got to it and doesn't have a date on when she can because she is busy. I am a entrepreneur myself and run multiple companies, which is why I feel that this is a completely unacceptable way to deal with a client. I don't usually write bad reviews but I do feel like people should be aware of my experience, and hopefully save them some of the trouble I've dealt with.

My mom and I had the displeasure of talking with Cynthia Nunn from Leighton Law to discuss going after Orlando Health for their negligence in treating my dad's cancer, which led to his passing. Not only did she make us relive our nightmarish story that we had already submitted online, she wasted our time by shutting us down immediately. If she was going to say no, why make us relive the trauma? To add insult to injury, she was actually defending the negligent doctors in question and straight up told us that our loved one was going to die anyway. Whether that was true or not, you do not just say that so nonchalantly to other people. You would not like that if someone said that about your dad. I am almost glad they did not take our case because I would rather deal with the devil himself than deal with Cynthia and Leighton Law after the added emotional damage she did to us.

Would rate a zero if possible. Company refused to call me back in reference to my questions on the letter I received. I had to leave multiple voicemails for someone Call me back just to tell me I needed to email. I now have emails I have gone unanswered since May 10 and again on June 21. I am positive. It is the correct email because I received correspondence with this email earlier this year. They will refuse to return your call for so long that your “attorney fees” Will double. Absolutely unprofessional… These people do not care and just want your money. My attorney fees for a $120 late HOA due (that I was not aware of) turned into over $1400+ . I’ve lived here for an entire year and never had to pay HOA dues because they were being taken out of my mortgage. All of a sudden, this year, something changed and I was not notified… How am I supposed to pay HOA dues I am not made aware of!? This law group seems like a bunch of crooks. ***response to business reply*** I received nothing in the mail prior to your notice. Neither did many homeowners for our HOA That has nothing to do with your inability to return an email since May 10th… and dragging your feet on responses so that more fees are added.

I am not a client, the client is an HOA that made it difficult for me to pay them. Tankel is not turning out to be better at that job. I Received a demand letter, with fees amounting to about 140% of the original amount. I attempted to call back. The first attempt died in a phone tree. Second attempt the line was dead. Attempts on numbers from the website, and another number on a letter insert all got the same results. The "Contact us" web form never gave an indication that anything was delivered, much less sent. The email address on the demand letter came back as undeliverable. I realize that some of this may be due to technical difficulties, maybe it is a tactical choice to try to unbalance debtors. Either way, a demand letter with unreliable contact information does not inspire confidence that resolution will be smooth. Should I draw a cashiers check and get my debt taken care of? Is the street address any good, and will someone answer traditional mail? The score is about 0.5 for 7 attempts. Would I hire this group to make collections from people who owe me money? It is not looking good. I wish my HOA would use someone that would answer the phone. Update: Response time via google reviews: 18 minutes. Fantastic! It turns out I mis-copied the email domain from the paper letter. That was my fault, just like it was my fault that I missed the paper mail updates from the HOA. I have not figured out why the phones and the web form don't work. Maybe voip phones, or aliased number don't work, Maybe the web form needs me to use Microsoft edge, or Safari. Upgrading to three stars.

She and another lawyer screwed me and my kids, and when I begged and pleaded for her to fix it, make it right. She told me it wasn’t going to affect me and she didn’t know why I was worried about it (see attached email response). To this day, it does affect me, and my children, and she simply didn’t care to make it right after happily accepting thousands of dollars. I am still dealing with a case that she didn’t fix and reached out again to try to have her resolve but she doesn’t even bother to answer. I had to file a bar complaint for her to respond only for her to tell me she feels she did her job. If that were the case why doesn’t the state recognize the order she filed and why won’t she fix it? This lawyer has no integrity, so if you want someone who will take your money and offer no help, this is the lawyer you want. She is overpriced and doesn’t even do her job. It’s a wonder she hasn’t be disbarred.

I had a horrible experience with Icard Merrill, I retained Lindsey Meshberger for a divorce case. There was a constant lack of communication but the 3 biggest problems were #1) changed her hourly billing, one month after retaining her and then when I asked about it, I received no reply. #2) Told the judge in court that the reason she lacked information on my case is because she just received the case when she had the case for 4 months prior. #3) I was not even informed of a case management hearing that I had until it was over and couldn’t participate. At this point, I don’t know whether to consider this maltreatment racist or negligent. Her paralegal, Kathie Summa was god awful and argumentative whenever approached with any concerns. This is an honest review from my very REAL experience with ICard Merrill. I understand that everything can not go my way in a case but there is a level of professionalism and transparency that should be handled with any business, that was not done with ICard Merrill.

What an Appeals Lawyer Can Do for You

An appeals lawyer specializes in representing clients in appellate courts, challenging or defending lower court decisions. If you believe that a legal error was made during your trial or that the court’s decision was unjust, an appeals lawyer can help you appeal the ruling to a higher court. They work to identify mistakes made during the trial, such as improper application of law, exclusion of key evidence, or jury misconduct. On the other hand, if you're defending a favorable judgment, an appeals lawyer can help protect the decision from being overturned.

Appeals lawyers don’t retry the case but instead focus on legal arguments and procedural issues to convince the appellate court to either overturn, modify, or uphold the lower court’s decision.

When Should I Hire an Appeals Lawyer?

Hiring an appeals lawyer is necessary when you are involved in a legal appeal, either as the appellant (the party appealing the case) or the appellee (the party defending the lower court’s ruling). Common situations in which you should hire an appeals lawyer include:

  • Appealing a conviction or ruling: If you’ve been convicted in a criminal case or lost a civil case and believe the decision was based on legal errors or improper procedures, an appeals lawyer can review the case and file an appeal on your behalf.
  • Challenging a sentence: In criminal cases, if you feel that the sentence is excessively harsh or not in line with legal standards, an appeals lawyer can work to reduce or modify the sentence.
  • Defending a lower court ruling: If the opposing party has filed an appeal to overturn a favorable ruling, an appeals lawyer can help defend the judgment and argue that the lower court’s decision should be upheld.
  • Complex legal issues: If your case involves complicated legal issues or interpretations of the law, an appeals lawyer can provide the necessary expertise to argue those points effectively before an appellate court.
  • Reviewing trial errors: Appeals lawyers can examine whether mistakes such as jury misconduct, improper exclusion or admission of evidence, or incorrect jury instructions occurred during the trial.

You should hire an appeals lawyer as soon as you decide to appeal or are informed that the other party is appealing the case, as appellate procedures are time-sensitive.

What Does an Appeals Lawyer Do?

An appeals lawyer provides specialized legal services to challenge or defend a lower court decision. Their role focuses on legal arguments, reviewing the trial record, and persuading the appellate court to either reverse or uphold the ruling. They can:

  • Review the trial record: Appeals lawyers meticulously review transcripts, evidence, and rulings from the original trial to identify any legal errors or procedural mistakes that could be grounds for appeal.
  • Prepare and file briefs: Appeals lawyers write legal briefs that present persuasive arguments to the appellate court. These briefs focus on the legal errors made during the trial and how they affected the outcome.
  • Present oral arguments: In many appeals, lawyers present oral arguments before a panel of judges, explaining why the lower court’s decision should be reversed or upheld based on legal principles.
  • Monitor case law developments: Appeals lawyers stay updated on changes in the law and precedents set by higher courts, which can be crucial in shaping the arguments they present during the appeal.
  • Provide legal advice on the likelihood of success: Appeals lawyers can offer a realistic assessment of your chances of winning the appeal based on the legal errors and evidence from the trial.

How Are Appeals Lawyers Paid?

Appeals lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the appeal and the amount of work required to prepare briefs and present arguments. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many appeals lawyers charge by the hour due to the significant amount of research, writing, and preparation involved in appeals. Hourly rates can range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For some straightforward appeals, a lawyer may charge a flat fee that covers all the work necessary to complete the appeal.
  • Retainer fee: In complex or high-stakes appeals, a lawyer may require a retainer, an upfront payment that covers the initial stages of the appeal. The lawyer then bills against this retainer for ongoing work.

It's important to discuss fees and costs upfront with your lawyer during the initial consultation to ensure you understand the financial commitment involved.

How Much Does an Appeals Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an appeals lawyer varies depending on factors such as the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the amount of work involved. General cost estimates include:

  • Straightforward appeals: For simpler appeals, such as those involving minor legal errors, fees can range from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the scope of work.
  • Complex appeals: Appeals that involve complicated legal issues, multiple grounds for appeal, or high-stakes outcomes can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more, especially if the case requires extensive legal research, brief writing, and oral arguments.
  • Hourly rates: Many appeals lawyers charge hourly rates ranging from $200 to $600 per hour, with higher rates often associated with more experienced attorneys or particularly challenging cases.

Before proceeding with your appeal, it’s crucial to ask for a clear estimate of the costs involved so you can budget appropriately.

Top Questions to Ask an Appeals Lawyer

Before hiring an appeals lawyer, it’s essential to ask questions to ensure they are well-suited for your case and that you understand the appeals process. Important questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with appeals?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience handling appellate cases, particularly in the area of law relevant to your case (e.g., criminal, civil, family, etc.).
  2. How do you charge for appeals?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a retainer, and request an estimate of the total costs for handling your appeal.
  3. What is the likelihood of success for my appeal?
A good appeals lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case’s strengths and weaknesses and the chances of winning the appeal.
  4. How long will the appeal process take?
Ask for an estimate of how long the appeal process might take, from filing the initial briefs to a final decision by the appellate court.
  5. Will you personally handle my appeal?
In larger law firms, junior attorneys or legal assistants may handle some of the research or drafting. Clarify who will be responsible for preparing and arguing your case.
  6. What is your approach to handling appeals?
Some lawyers may be more inclined to focus on procedural issues, while others emphasize broader legal arguments. Make sure the lawyer’s approach aligns with your goals.

How to Check the Credibility of an Appeals Lawyer

To ensure that you’re hiring a reputable appeals lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for appellate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in appellate law and have successfully handled appeals similar to yours.
  • Check client reviews and testimonials: Look for client feedback on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to get insight into the lawyer’s track record and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their expertise and success in handling appeals.
  • Look for recognition in appellate law: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers (AAAL) or awards and recognition in appellate law can indicate a lawyer’s expertise in this specialized area.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an appeals lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Trial transcripts and court records: The lawyer will need a complete record of the original trial, including transcripts, motions, exhibits, and the final judgment or order.
  • Legal briefs from the trial: If any briefs or motions were filed during the trial, bring copies so the appeals lawyer can review the legal arguments that were presented.
  • Written decision or verdict: Bring the court’s written ruling, verdict, or decision so the lawyer can identify any potential errors or issues to raise on appeal.
  • Questions about the appeal process: Write down any questions you have about the appeal’s timeline, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • List of potential legal errors: If you believe specific mistakes were made during the trial (e.g., improper evidence, legal misinterpretations), provide a list of those issues.

Being well-prepared for your consultation allows the lawyer to assess your case more effectively and provide the best guidance on how to proceed with your appeal.
