I have never been on the wrong side of the law until recently. Heck, I don't even drive faster than the speed limit (most times). So, I was in disbelief when I was slapped with some insane charges. We brought Ryan on after we were with another Attorney for over 2 months. During this time the previous Attorney didn't consult with our son at all in person. We hired this amazing Attorney Ryan Couzens AFTER he made an in person visit with our son. Yes he took the time to meet with and listen to our son prior to receiving retainer fee. Hired 9/22/24 for sentencing hearing on 10/3/24. Ryan knew more about the case than previous council and argued the case like he was representing his own son. He did what I think an Attorney should do (communicated) with us and our son the entire time. He took the pressure off. I just can't say enough. Our son was looking at a prison sentence and Ryan the miracle man came through for him. Our son received a short jail sentence and probation. Ryan is an exceptional and practical attorney. Ryan represented me after picking up my case from another attorney at his prior firm. My son was taken from his mother by DCFS I didn’t know this happened until 4 and half month after he was placed in a strangers house ! And this was the second DCFS case the first one I was the victim that didn’t press charges or show up to the case because my logic was I was the victim in that case so how do I need to show up ? Well I was very wrong and my rights to my son were limited to 1 supervised visit per year! So for 4 years I was basically paying her to see my kid and I was paying large sums of money to do so. When I showed up to court, the court provided me with so free but terrible lawyer I left court and was reaching out to her and her office with no response calling 4-5 times a day for over a week and that wasn’t gonna work! So I literally meet or had phone conversations with every attorney that deals with these type of cases and I only had a good feeling about Matt so I retained him he promised to get me full custody of my son and we came up with a solid game plan and instructed me every step of the way he was also was my therapist and a very patient friend because I too was in the system when I was a child so I was very hard to witness my child going through the same traumatic situation , Long story short Sole physical custody and the mom only gets a 4 hour visit per month this was my dream and it’s a reality now !!!

Very thankful for the time and attention on my case! My case is very complex and multifaceted. Attorney Matt has remained unfazed and calm throughout this whole process even when put in situations he was not prepared for due to DPSS changing things up on the spot at the last minute which was out of his control. Mr Oberstein was the third attorney to help me with my case and ultimately the most knowledgeable about my specific situation. He did what others said could not be done do to my specific charges. It was a 2 step process that Mr Oberstein had to sort out.
First was the erroneous/incorrect placement by the DOJ. After the creation of the tiered system for 290 registrants I was placed in tier 3 and remained with the requirement of lifetime registration in CA. He was successful in having the DOJ review my case and charges resulting in the correct placement in tier 1. This immediately opened the door to petition the DA for removing my requirement to register. That petition was granted and a huge dark cloud that I created for myself and my family was lifted after 12 years of being 290 registered.
To be honest, the process was slow (particularly to get a response from the DOJ) and I lost confidence several times. Mr Oberstein always answered or returned my calls promptly and assured me that my desired outcome was possible and justified.
I do highly recommend Mr Oberstein especially if you have similar circumstances. Again, he was the only one that had 100% confidence that this was possible.

Tracy gave excellent advice on a number of criminal charges that I had in California forty-six years ago. She instructed me to get a record and she found that I had no convictions except one, which unbeknownst to me, was expunged. This old record came up when I applied for a trusted traveler card. When I had questions, she answered them promptly. Her price was fair. I highly recommend her.

When I had a question about how to get my RN license after waiting 5 months - she answered my questions very promptly! She took time out her weekend to call me and go through all of the steps I have done - THEN she called me back after she did her own research on what might have kept my application with the state held up. She told me to fill out the appropriate paperwork and with ONE WEEK --- I had my license!!! I can't tell you how much I appreciated Tracy taking time out of her weekend with her family to help me! It has been a long road for me for the past 5 years on probation. It was really tough, but with the help and expertise of Dan Greene I was able to survive and successfully completed my probation on May 10, 2020. Jamey and Dylan(and staff) was AMAZING!
Seriously. I called around to others in the area- having never been arrested, in jail or anything like this before, I didn't know what to expect. The first person I called was rude, he had been practicing DUI cases in Monterey for many years, and I am sure he was knowledgeable, but I didn't trust him the ways I trusted Jamey; right from the start, he was kind and very professional. He seems like a good guy too, a straight-talker who is down to earth, and smart.
Anyhow, that was my initial impression and my gut was right! This was one, if not, the worst thing to ever happen to me. I needed someone to walk me through the journey and I got more than I expected.
So my story – I was knocked out. I was on vacation in Canery Row and parked my car on the street set a 2 hour timer on my phone and went to my favorite restaurant in the area. Time passed, plans changed, and the timer went off, I booked a hotel nearby. As I went to move the rental car one tenth of the mile away, in to valet, something hit the back of my car. I come to learn someone on a skateboard lost control of their skateboard and it hit the back of the rental car. I didn't know what had happened, for all I knew, another car could have hit the back of my car. So I got out to see what happened and a large man came charging at me, I turned around to get back in the car, and that's when I was knocked out. This all happened within seconds of getting out to see if anyone was hurt based off the bang I heard, in the middle of bumper to bumper traffic, on Canery Row.
Minutes later, police and ambulance came, witnesses described that the man had run away. The police officer was a complete jerk, newer on the force(Jamey tells me) – no field sobriety test was given. They arrived when I was on the sidewalk, bleeding and in shock at what happened. Instead of being treated like a victim, I was handcuffed because they smelt whiskey on my breath. I spent the next 48 hours in a holding cell, it was like what I imagine hell to be like, very sad. Since the officer was horrible, he failed to follow correct procedure. Jamey reviewed the body footage and advised the Judge to do so too. Because of this insight Jamey had, the DMV through out the case entirely. Typically, this sort of thing carries 1 year mandatory suspension of license.
I had a BAC of .089, which is right at the bottom of the legal limit. Jamey told me from day one that he would push for me to get a reduction of the charge to a “Wet Reckless”(carries lower fines and not a DUI charge).
One 12 hour class later and approximately $1000 in fines, I have moved on with my life.
Everytime I thought of that evening, I would get irate. I actually have had to stop thinking about it entirely in order to maintain myself and move on in a healthy way. Sometime after the 3rd phone call or so(I have lived in a different state for over a decade), Jamey would encourage me to not allow the things we couldn't change, to effect us today. That wisdom and care from this professional, went a very long way. I needed that perspective, he cared enough about his client to provide it and care for their mental state.
That's what I will think of when I think back to getting knocked out, with no justice and being jailed for 2 days, due to an error I made of parking on the street. The kindness of my attorney, what a great outcome for a miserable period of time.

Jamey was a great attorney from the very beginning to the very end of my case. He listened to all of my concerns especially since I no longer live in the area. He assured me and was very clear that it was something he could represent me even from being far away! He is also very straightforward and updates you with every little detail throughout your case as fast as possible. I honestly was very nervous but after speaking to Jamey he made me feel like I was not alone and just kept my head up and move on from this mistake. I hired Mr. Shapiro at a horrible time when my life fell apart very publicly because of a poor choice of mine. David was very helpful at shooting straight with me, as well as teaching me, my wife, and my family about the different nuances, definitions, and options of the legal system (which is a disappointingly designed system). Our story with Wallin and Klarich started when we had a serious accusation thrown at a family member. I called them on a Saturday evening, left a message; I immediately got a call from Jonathan Lynn, one of their senior lawyers who made an appointment with us even on a Sunday. He then referred us to one of the partners of the firm, Matthew Wallin, and after our first meeting, we knew that we were starting off on the right path in having this firm at our side.
Matt was always there for us. I know he is a top rated lawyer who handles a lot of cases, but he never made us feel that our case was any less serious or less important. He was always prompt, detailed, pro-active and he was always respectful. Contrary to what a few negative reviewers post here, this firm never made us feel that our case was about money first. I actually had to ask them several times to review the retainer since I really felt that they were spending so much time on our case vs. what we were paying for. I was pulled over for doing donuts in an empty dirt lot, and the police officer told me I would get something in the mail. Almost a year later, I got a court summons telling me I was to be charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and vandalism. Adding insult to injury, the DA’s office made me court date AFTER I had moved out of state for school! After consulting with and retaining Matt Wallin, I could not be happier with the outcome. He represented me and kept me updated with all relevant info, and was very professional. Mr. Wallin eventually got both charges dropped and the case dismissed. I was arrested for DUI in Alameda County. Marc was recommended to me by a family member. I did not know whether to hire him before the District Attorney would make a charging decision. Marc advised me to hire someone good to represent me asap because he said that based upon his former experience as a prosecutor, it was much better if I had a good lawyer plead my case before a charging decision was made. I am also a criminal defense lawyer and have been since 1997. Jim Gass was actually one of my supervising attorneys when I was a law clerk and in the first 3 years of my practice I worked with him extensively. He supervised my first jury trial. I have represented co-defendants in cases with him.
If I needed a lawyer to defend me in trial, I would move Heaven and Earth to convince Jim to represent me. I am not at all exaggerating.
I have seen...I don't know...maybe thousands of criminal defense attorneys in action. I have seen criminal defense lawyers who are flashier and undoubtedly more comfortable with charging people crazy high fees because, after all, being a little full of BS is part of the business side of criminal defense. I don't know how to say this as a positive thing but, I don't think that Jim is good at convincing people to fork over their entire life savings to represent them. He should be because he really is worth it.
Jim is exceptionally good in front of juries...exceptionally...really exceptionally. Are you getting that I am saying he is exceptionally good at connecting with normal types of people who end up on juries?
And, the other thing good about Jim is that he doesn't come across as threatening or arrogant to prosecutors even though they know he is a threat. So, while other criminal defense lawyers may tick off prosecutors and make them want to beat the lawyer, prosecutors in the Inland Empire courts just kind of know that he WILL beat them. It is that trait that allows Jim to effectively settle cases in my opinion.
I wish I could pull rabbits out of hats like Jim can. Anyone who writes a bad review doesn't know what they are talking about and I bet that most of the people who have reviewed him would give him stars that go beyond 5 if it were possible to do it.
Funny but, the only reason I am writing this review is that I have a former client who I just gave Jim's information to so I had to look him up on the internet to get the number. Those people will be in good hands if they hire him.

I hired Mr. Wallin to handle a very important matter. He came highly recommended and the recommendation was correct! He has over 30 years in practice, including time as a prosecuting attorney. All the DA's and judges know him and respect him. That is just who you want reprenting you. I came to Elliot for a consultation to handle my 10 year old felony case. I hadn't completed the terms of my probation, none of it, and I was ready to turn myself in. As it turned out not only was my felony probation violation open, but also a slew of smaller warrants for traffic violations.
I consulted with a few different attorneys who were all really great but I decided to go with Elliot and I am very glad that I did.
First he met me on a Saturday which was very convenient. He genuinely seemed to care about helping me. He was honest and upfront, didn't make any promises to give me false hope. Which I appreciated as I knew how serious the consequences were going to be.
Leading up to court there were many times that I had questions about our strategy and Elliot was always available to reply via email, and take my calls. It felt like I was his only client.
In front of the judge where it matter the most, Elliot really came through. When my character came into question, he argued fiercely on my behalf. That's when I was 100% sure that I had made the right choice.
In the end I received my best possible outcome, and I have Elliot to thank for that. Out of 4 cases (1 Felony and 3 Misdemeanors) that he handled for me I received positive outcomes in each. I was wrongly accused of a violation of the law that I did not commit.
