Attorney Aja Mann, was my lawyer for 13 years. In those 13 years of representing me, she was outstanding! Not only did she advise me with wisdom and grace, she taught me that you must be fair and compassionate when it comes to difficult situations while co-parenting. Because of her I was able to obtain full custody of my son, and I thank her every day for in some form or fashion for bringing me joy and peace.

After visiting my son who lives out of state, I was deeply concerned by his emotional struggles and the difficulties he was facing at home with his mom. As a divorced parent living in another state, I felt powerless to advocate for him and feared I was failing as a father. My visitation rights and other arrangements had always been unfair, dictated by the terms of the other party. From our first conversation, Aja reassured me that I had parental rights and a voice in my son's well-being. Her exceptional negotiation skills and unwavering advocacy led to more equitable arrangements for our family, prioritizing my son's health and happiness. We are incredibly grateful for her efforts and highly recommend her to anyone in need of a sharp, dedicated attorney who will fight for you.

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional legal support provided by Matt Mesnik. From the moment I walked into his office, I was met with patience, professionalism, insight, and compassion. Matt's personable demeanor immediately put me at ease during what was undoubtedly one of the most difficult periods of my life. What truly sets Matt apart is his ability to see through the noise and get to the heart of the matter. He doesn't shy away from being assertive when necessary, yet he approaches every situation with a level of calmness and compassion that is truly admirable. His dedication to his clients is unwavering; he goes above and beyond to ensure that every avenue is explored to achieve the best possible outcome. Matt is not just a lawyer; he is a friend and advocate. He takes the time to listen attentively, understand the nuances of each case, and tailor his approach accordingly. His commitment to winning for his clients is palpable, and his determination is contagious. Having Matt in my corner during this challenging time has been an invaluable asset. I can wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone in need of a family law attorney who is not only skilled and competent but also genuinely cares about his clients.

I gotta be honest, I did not know what to expect halfway into a highly contentious, long, drawn-out battle in my divorce. COVID didn't help the process either. The Court ordered a Minor's Counsel. A friend of mine instantly knew who she was having dealt with custody issues in her divorce as well, and told me I'd love her. She was SO right. From day one, Barbara was open and honest with (both my ex and) me, but more importantly, brilliant with my teenager. They developed an excellent rapport and my teen completely respected and trusted her. She would remind me when I was ignorant or incorrect, and praise me when I had the right approach. Firm, but always professional. She was impartial towards us parents, but absolutely represented my kid's best interest. After my child refused to have contact with their mom, she further recommended Dr. Liberman as a Reconciliation Counselor, as they have worked together for years. I can only offer gratitude and praise for him as well. In the end, I was awarded full custody until my kid's 18th bday, and we remained protected from my ex-wife. The Court did the right thing, not only in their initial decision granting a DVRO and Custody, but also in introducing us to Barbara Fritz, Esq. HIGHLY Recommended

We had such a horrible experience with this Counselor. She is always asks for cash and meets at strange places! I gave her $2000 , she never completed the case, and gets extremely aggressive and angry when I followed up! I then started to worry about this and did some research on her. She was previously a Pole Dancer at a nightclub ! Wow! No wonder she exhibits this weird and strange behavior, I wonder how she handles her other cases. My money went down the drain! Pls take caution before hiring her.

After another Family Lawyer charged me $40K and didn't do anything but expensive discoveries, I ended up in Adam Gurley's Office begging for help. They are a team of caring professionals without the greed of most family law attorneys. It was a bit inconvenient to drive to his office as I live in Daly City, but it was well worth it. I hired Mr. Gurley after his initial consultation when he overstated his abilities and also asked me to write a favorable review (on another website) due to a competition he had going with another attorney. He started out pretty good but when push came to shove he pretty much sold me out. The real eye opener was in an all day negotiating session he arrived ahead of me and without waiting for me to arrive , began meeting with opposing counsel and did not respond to my phone calls. He went on to make numerous comments regarding the lack of value while negotiating personal property issues. Then after we had negotiated a settlement, and I requested that he NOT continue responding to opposing counsel's requests, which amounted to clerical functions while charging out at an attorney's hourly rate, Mr Gurley withdrew from my case as I was in the middle of packing and scrambling to lease an apartment, after my initial agreement fell through. I was shocked that he would pull such a unprofessional maneuver. I would not recommend him to a friend .

After $400/hour to Kari and $150/hour to paralegal. At the end of the day after 5 months of representation and thousands and thousands in legal fees you have no positive results. You will be pitched with experience and how aggressive and her matchups against other attorneys in town. Tooting one’s own horn and you get nothing to show for it. I hated the opposing attorney of my ex cause she lies and plays dirty. What am I telling you? The more aggressive attorney gets you results. You won’t find it here. Go elsewhere please. Ask why such a successful business can’t get the website working?

I called her and was honest from the beginning that I could not afford her regular fees. I told her that I was just taking a random chance that she may help me as an attorney by taking me on at pro bono or reduced rate. She was super nice . She was talking to me for 30 minutes and empathized with my situation and we laughed about some things we had in common. Before we got off the phone , she told me she’d be in touch shortly to discuss “next steps !” I was very clear with her that I had a hearing later that afternoon and that my case was time sensitive . She said not to worry that she’d help me. I waited and waited - no call. I called her after a few hours , Bht no answer. Finally I ended up going to my hearing , not having heard anything from her at all. I was really taken aback as she assured she’d help me. I called her from my google voice number , wondering if she was avoiding me. Sure enough , she picked up. But what was shocking was she acted like I had done something wrong and acted like I was somehow a random person she’d never Spoken to. Luckily toward the last 10-12 min of the 30 min call I’d had with her earlier, where she’d been 180 degree different and nice, the maintenance man was fixing something In my apartment. I had been in the kitchen when I spoke to her, while he was In the living room working on the heater. I asked him if he recalled me talking to someone and being already on the phone when he first came in ( I have given authorization for maintenance to enter without me having to open door or be home) and he said yes, he did remember . I asked him if the conversation sounded weird or bad as I talked from what he could hear from my end of the call. I was doubting myself with how Julia responded to me as she answered the phone. He said that he didn’t hear anything that sounded Like a negative conversation and had heard me laughing a few times ( as I had also remembered ). In any case , I’m not sure if there is an identical twin , an alternate personality or what it was . But her behavior was concerning. She left me hanging after I had counted on her and was waiting for her to follow through. My suspicion is that she communicated with minors counsel on my case, likely violated confidentiality and Minors counsel has already violated confidentiality by disclosing and sending a previous case we had that was sealed, and sending documents to parties that had no right to view it. She’s under investigation by California bar attorney regulation. I’m reporting Julia to the same board for this. Her lack of professionalism was a hindrance to my case. She didn’t even have the decency to inform me she would not follow through. She instead left me waiting for her, never having the courtesy to let me know so I would not have wasted my time.

My ex filed a restraining order against me based on false claims and somehow the order was erroneously granted by a judge prior to a hearing. I desperately needed a family law firm to help me through this situation as my career had been jeopardized. I decided to call Bressman Family Law after seeing great yelp reviews. While other firms would have assistants call me and give me boilerplate answers to my concerns, Julia was the only one to give me a call directly and give me advice during my free consultation. She immediately started to run through strategic ways she would handle my case. I felt heard. I hired Bressman Family Law firm and in turn was provided with great service by Julia and Andrew. They're both very knowledgeable lawyers and experts in their field. They were aggressive in their tactics and they were able to settle my case outside of court which saved me money in the long run. Julia and Andrew worked outside of regular hours and dedicated a lot of time and effort into my case; sometimes even late into the night. I hope never to have to use them again! But if needed, I know they will get the job done.

I had been struggling with my divorce for several years until Lilah stepped in. Lilah immediately put me at ease because I knew I was in the hands of a pro. What I liked most about Lilah is that she formulated a strategy for me. She gave me my options and explained the pros and cons of each so that I was still ultimately in control. She was straight forward not only with the strengths of my case but also equally blunt about my weaknesses. She refused to blow smoke up my skirt allowing me to have false confidence in the unlikely. I really respected that. Lilah was also understanding of my financial situation by giving me advice to help me save money instead of cranking up the expenses as many attorneys do. When it came time to put the case together, Lilah's expertise was obvious. She overwhelmed the other party with a clear and logical case that was supported with facts and legal precedence. It was unarguable. And it would've been an impossible feat by myself. I am very happy with the results Lilah got for me.

I never planned on divorcing, so I had no clue how to even start the process and I felt quite overwhelmed. My first meeting with Lilah consisted of me learning a ton of complex details in words and explanations I could actually understand. Lilah took the time to explain the journey through divorce towards amiable co-existance and co-parenting. Lilah took my concerns seriously and respected my desire for harmonious dynamics between me and my ex. The forms and explanations she drafted and submitted were excellent in form and content- she really knows her business. The dialogue she gave me to use in court came in handy and helped me gain and maintain some agency in the courtroom. Lilah accepted and respected my priorities, so my divorce wasn't about money and acrimony, it was about learning the process and making the best decisions for my kids. Lilah always kept my kids in mind. She is an expert in her field and a true people person as well. I would recommend her whole heartedly to family and friends and you.

I hired this attorney from a well-known law firm in San Francisco at the recommendation of a new friend. I was newly separated at a vulnerable time in my life. Lilah seemed confident and well spoken. However, she filed my case incorrectly with the court (which now has to be fixed), her firm over-billed, she did not provide any strategy or direction for my case (I came up with most of the strategy from the advice of friends) and she raised her voice to me several times, and was kinder to opposing counsel than she was to me -- and now I see why. She was looking for another job while her own firm dissolved. Beware this attorney. At the very least, she lacks the experience to handle a complicated family law case. Hire a certified family law specialist instead.

I went through a very horrible divorce, and an extremely difficult child custody battle. Robin would always listen to all of my concerns, and addressed them as best as she could. She was very sympathetic to the pain the difficulties put me through. She would always make sure that I had answers to all of my questions in a timely manner. She never lied to me or try to sugar coat anything. She would just let me know the plain, and sometimes very hard, truths. She very patiently walked me through the whole long process. She always made sure that I knew all the good and bad possibilities, and prepared me for every possible outcome. She would always reassure me through the discouraging phases, and rejoice with me in the victories. After informing me of all the possible options we could take, she wouldn’t push me to go one direction or the other but, she would wait patiently for my decision on which path to take. After I was fully informed and had made my decision then, she would pursue that path wholeheartedly, with all her knowledge and skills. Thankfully in the end we were wonderfully victorious in our case. I say “we” because, with Robin you won’t feel you’re going through it alone. I truly believe the reason why we were so successful is because of Robin’s guidance, patience, knowledge and skill. She is a fantastic attorney, and I recommend her to everyone who wants only the highest quality attorney in their corner. Thank you Robin for all that you have done for me and my children.

You need the best. There are some things you simply cannot afford not to spend every single penny on. The top of that list would be protecting your family/children. Find a way to make it work so that you get the best counsel possible because it truly makes a world of difference in family court. I came to Mr. Canaday with a custody situation that was malicious and truly based on parental alienation. The opposing side was trying everything they could to defame me as a parent by dredging up every blemish of my history—which admittedly wasn’t always the best. We ended up needing to go to trial as the opposing side was very manipulative. Mr. Canaday came to court with a tour-de-force performance. He was sharp, completely prepared, knew my wishes, knows all the pertinent laws without needing to be shady like some attorneys and he will absolutely defend your rights as a parent. Things may not move as quickly as you may expect but that is simply what happens when you have the best and are working toward a goal that can keep you from needing to return to court in the long-term. Nearly the entire courtroom came up to him asking for his card after seeing him argue on my behalf. After a lengthy trial, I was ultimately awarded in my, and (more importantly) my child’s best interest. He has a very concise examination style and incredible respect for the court/judicial system that always plays to your interest because your lawyer represents you! He is clearly well respected by his peers/judges and has a long history working in Bakersfield/Kern county. I spent a lot of time with Mr. Canaday and cannot recommend him with higher praise if I tried. I always felt he was honest and willing to answer my questions and fiercely negotiate on my behalf. I owe him more than money could ever re-pay for helping to protect my relationship between my child and I.

I met with Miller Family Law regarding a Temporary Restraining Order filed against me. After the initial consultation, based on both Matt and Evelin's thoughtful approach I retained the firm. I was impressed by Matt and Evelin's combined knowledge of the process and their ability to develop a defense that was concise, accurate, and thorough, which resulted in a removal of all temporary orders. Their follow up advice since the matter was settled has also been valuable. I could not recommend the Miller Family Law Group any higher. Thanks Matt and Evelin for all your hard work!

Have been through the mill with divorce attorneys, five of them and over $100,0000 in legal fees and almost 2 years in court before I found the Miller Family Law Group. Matthew Miller was able to get my case on track, get things in order, utilize the law on behalf of my son to get 2% custody (can you believe?) turned to 46% custody. The Family Law Court is such a dens of thieves with attorneys playing divorce games, threatened restraining orders, filing phony police reports, etc. Matthew Miller turned all this around. No games, just the law. Matthew and Evelina work tirelessly, even in the late hours, and they've had to work with a frustrated dad. Matthew Miller practices law like it should be practiced. He won't throw tomatoes for you. He will just get what needs to be done, done. And out of the six attorneys I've hired, his fees were the most reasonable!

When I first retained Mr. Miller 8 years ago for my divorce and ugly child custody matter, I was especially concerned with his youthful, boy-next-door appearance. I wasn't sure he would be tough enough for the battlefield. I quickly learned Matthew is more than capable. Not only does he know the law, but he understands the politics and procedures of how these things work. He knew when to sit back and when to stand up. His advice to me was spot-on and results were even better than I expected. Several years later when I needed his services again, he again did a fantastic job for me and my family. Together with his wife/partner Evelina, the Miller Family Law Group has been nothing but professional and effective. They've both always been accessible and totally available whenever I've had questions and have explained every process to me fully and respectfully. Most importantly, I completely trust Matthew. He has represented me, advised me and fought for me. These types of matters are so difficult and emotional you need someone who is looking out for your best interests. It's been many years but I continue to be immensely grateful for Mr. Miller's service. I highly recommend Matthew Miller as a family law attorney.

I was lucky enough to have Mary Ann as my representation when I was going through a difficult time. She was quick to return phone calls and always explained thoroughly what was going on and what the next step would be. She patiently answered every question that I had. Her legal team at office (Maxine-Lauren -Diana) are very nice and professional. I truly believe that she got me the best result possible. I enthusiastically endorse her to anyone who needs legal help.

Mary Ann was recommended to me when I needed an attorney to address child custody issues. I could not have been more satisfied with this recommendation. Mary Ann listens. She is compassionate and caring, yet she is also honest. We have unfortunately had a variety of situations arise and while this has been a stressful, drawn out process, I feel that I have been extremely well represented. Mary Ann is able to take my feelings, frustrations and concerns and succinctly puts them into well written documents. In the end, I have what is most important to me, full custody of my son and I have her to thank for that. I would recommend her without hesitation. She is professional, organized and absolutely knows what she is doing.

I was referred to Mary Ann Noiroux by an acquaintance who was also an attorney, but didn't specialize in Family Law. Let me tell you that was the best referral that I've ever received! I was faced with a divorce involving two minor children after many years of marriage, and to further complicate my situation my now ex-wife is a powerful attorney herself. Outgunned and intimidated, I turned to Mary Ann for relief from a very painful situation. She literally saved my life! She immediately put an end to many unpleasant and harsh conditions, established a level playing ground, and never ceased being a zealous advocate of my rights as father of my children and as the weaker partner in the marriage. Everything that she predicted would happen did happen. She has exceptional maneuverability inside of the court system and is well respected by her peers. Mary Ann, simply stated, is an exceptional attorney with an incredible array of skill sets. I will be forever grateful for what she has done for me! Pat P.

Used him as my lawyer and I fully regret it. Never contacted me to update me on my divorce. Always had to go in to figure out what was taking so long with the paperwork and would always beat around the bush and give me some BS excuse. And when I did hear from him, it was him sending me a bill or letting me know he needed more money. So while he did absolutely nothing for my case, he still charged me thousands of dollars...for what?? But the receipt says he charged me $160 for "updating his assistant on the case." Give me a break. This guy will charge you an arm and a leg just to walk over to the fax machine. After 18 months of this nonsense, I hired a new lawyer and she got it done in just a few months. If you wanna be taken advantage of and legally robbed, go for it. But do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

I researched extensively to find a lawyer who was not only smart (Neil was an Anthony M. Kennedy Fellow) but also unwilling to take anything but the high road. I also wanted an attorney who would listen to my concerns, complaints, and even demands, but still keep me on the high road as well. In spite of many personal attacks on me and even on Neil by my ex-husband and his lawyer, Neil continued to focus on issues and avoid the low ground that so many divorce cases and custody cases can travel. In my case, I had an ex who after not paying his full child support for six years and owing over $40,000, decided to take me to court to dispute the arrears and get more custody. Yes, that sounds ridiculous and that is exactly the right word to explain the proceedings that took 6 months due to my ex continually making claims and filings that prolonged the inevitable. Throughout the entire 6 months there were many times I was ready to either throw in the towel, or go for the jugular. In each case Neil clearly laid out the correct course of action and stuck to it. Not only did he keep me on the right track, Neil kept himself on the moral high ground. My ex and his attorney resulted to personal attacks on Neil in their court filings, but Neil refused to respond and stayed on point. I believe his approach saved me from getting into an even longer battle of he said/she said. He was fair in his billing, honest in his approach with me and my ex, and clearly experienced with the courts and family law. I highly recommend Neil!!

Ms. Cirlin seemed competent at first. My case was not difficult but she neglected to review the details and performed horribly. My (ex) wife hired a savvy attorney and Ms. Cirlin was not in the same league. She failed to anticipate issues and therefore failed in the negotiations. I don't recommend hiring her. I read the reviews and thought she was a good attorney, but after I paid her a lot of money she did nothing for me. If I represented myself I could have done a better job.

My case was a little bit odd to some extend. I have been divorced for over 10 years. Me and my ex wife agreed by signing a contract that she won't collect spousal support since she took everything from the house, and from the sale of the house. But, she came back demanding spousal support. I'm so blessed that I found Lauren and her wonderful team. She is an awesome human being apart from an excellent lawyer who is always prepared. The judge denied my ex wife's request. I would recommend Lauren to anyone and everyone.

I hired Lauren over a year into my divorce settlement. Things were getting out of control, and my (ex-)wife's lawyers were pulling all kinds of tricks to try and extort me for assets and spousal support. Progress had halted, and was starting to go backwards. A friend of mine recommended Lauren and Viola Law. After just a couple of conversations with Lauren, including some clever strategy and wise guidance, she quickly gave me some tools I needed to navigate the bullshit that I was facing from the other side. Within three weeks, we reached a fair settlement that I was overwhelmingly happy with. Thank you Lauren for your help.

Divorce something I never thought I would be going through. I was desperate and needed guidance and I found Jeanne!! Can't thank her enough for her services. She made things seem so easy during the process, she cares about the people she's helping. Thanks to her I found courage and strength during this hard time I could not have done this without her. I left it all in her hands and I would do it again if I had to. Thank you very much Mrs. Jeanne my children and I are forever grateful.

I was often frustrated with how long it took Jeanne to follow through on things during divorce process. Things she should have taken care of didn't get done. I relied on her to know, and make sure I knew, the things that needed to be done. Ultimately, she didn't follow through on a very important final detail. It resulted in costing me several thousands of dollars and months of time consuming/stressful phone calls and letters to unraveling the mess. when I contacted her for help, she was willing to talk with me, send me a copy of my settlement, and make a phone call; but anything more than that and she "would have to charge me for her time". Not exactly the way I would have handled it if I had made that mistake.

I was really impressed with the way Attorney Lacy was very direct with me. I was really angry and emotional, and he was able to redirect my goals to be reasonable. I was really in a vulnerable state of mind, and he told me he needed to protect me from me more than anything. He was right. I have friends who spent tens of thousands of dollars on their divorces, and I am really glad looking back now that I did not. I have Attorney Lacy to thank for that.

Mr. Lacy was unable to assist in achieving my goal of equal and shared parenting and custody. He seemed to go through the motions. Prepared documents had errors and lacked clarity. This resulted in extra back and forth and fees. Ultimately, I found a new attorney to represent me. Examples: - He correspond with opposing counsel to address court ordered phone calls/schedule but failed to achieve anything - Rather than work for me, he seemed to agree to anything opposing counsel requested - Mr. Lacy was difficult to contact and working with him was a mistake I'm writing this review to make others aware that Mr. Lacy is a "fair/average" attorney, despite his advertisements and sensational ratings. I was shocked to see "superb" as his Avvo rating. This is not accurate.

once she takes on a matter, she sticks with it. In my case, which dealt with financial abuse of an elderly man, she travel to another state in order to get face-to-face interviews, gathered evidence and, when she had to bring in another lawyer to help, she was eager to assist him. She is especially gentle is relating to her client, helping to ease him past the hurt while remaining completely professional I would like to use her again.

Excellent in trial, smart. She is really good at what she does, and did a lot to help me understand the process and what my options were. She's very approachable and down to earth, not stuck up or stuffy like how I thought all lawyers are. My ex's attorney was really nasty, and she just stayed professional, but then kicked their butt when we went to court. Hard to get her on the phone sometimes, she's in court a lot.

What a Child Custody Lawyer Can Do for You

A child custody lawyer specializes in helping parents navigate legal matters related to the custody and care of their children, particularly in the context of divorce, separation, or other family disputes. These lawyers assist with determining custody arrangements, drafting parenting plans, and advocating for your rights in court. They also help resolve disputes over physical custody (where the child lives), legal custody (who makes decisions for the child), visitation rights, and modifications to existing custody orders.

Whether you're going through a divorce or need to change an existing custody arrangement, a child custody lawyer can help you understand your rights and protect your child's best interests throughout the legal process.

When Should I Hire a Child Custody Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a child custody lawyer in several situations, especially when disputes arise or complex legal issues affect your parental rights. Some common reasons to hire a child custody lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: If you're going through a divorce or separation and need to establish custody and visitation arrangements, a lawyer can help ensure the custody order reflects your child's best interests.
  • Disputed custody cases: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody or visitation terms, a lawyer can advocate for your rights in court and help you develop a strong case.
  • Modification of custody orders: If you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to changes in circumstances (e.g., relocation, changes in the child’s needs), a lawyer can help file a modification request.
  • Parental alienation: If the other parent is interfering with your relationship with your child, a lawyer can help address these issues through legal action.
  • Domestic violence or abuse: If there is a history of domestic violence or abuse, a lawyer can help protect you and your child by requesting restraining orders and advocating for appropriate custody arrangements.
  • Grandparent or third-party custody: If you are a grandparent or another relative seeking custody or visitation rights, a lawyer can guide you through the legal process.
  • Paternity disputes: In cases where paternity is in question, a lawyer can assist with establishing or challenging paternity, which may affect custody and visitation rights.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help protect your parental rights and ensure that the custody arrangement is in your child's best interests.

What Does a Child Custody Lawyer Do?

A child custody lawyer provides a variety of legal services to help parents resolve custody disputes and secure favorable custody arrangements for their children. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing custody petitions: Helping you file the necessary paperwork to request custody or visitation rights and ensuring all legal procedures are followed.
  • Negotiating custody agreements: Assisting in negotiating custody and visitation arrangements, often working toward a mutually beneficial parenting plan without going to court.
  • Representing you in court: If you and the other parent cannot agree on custody terms, representing you in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments to support your case.
  • Drafting parenting plans: Helping you draft a comprehensive parenting plan that outlines the schedule for physical custody, decision-making responsibilities, and visitation.
  • Handling child support issues: Assisting with related issues such as child support, ensuring that financial obligations are properly calculated and enforced.
  • Modifying custody orders: Helping you request a modification from the court if you need to change an existing custody arrangement due to significant life changes.
  • Mediating custody disputes: Acting as a mediator to help both parents reach an agreement on custody and visitation without the need for litigation.

How Are Child Custody Lawyers Paid?

Child custody lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case, the time involved, and the nature of the legal work. Common payment methods include:

  • Hourly rate: Most child custody lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer's experience and location. The total cost depends on the time spent preparing documents, negotiating, and representing you in court.
  • Flat fee: For simple custody matters or uncontested custody agreements, some lawyers may offer a flat fee for specific services, such as drafting a parenting plan or filing a custody petition.
  • Retainer: Many lawyers require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the lawyer works on your case. The amount varies based on the expected complexity and duration of the case.
  • Sliding scale or pro bono services: Some lawyers may offer reduced fees or pro bono (free) services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in cases involving domestic violence or other serious issues.

It’s important to discuss fees and payment arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how much you will be charged and what services are included.

How Much Does a Child Custody Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a child custody lawyer depends on various factors, including the complexity of the case, whether it’s contested or uncontested, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Uncontested custody cases: Legal fees may range from $1,500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the paperwork and any negotiations.
  • Contested custody cases: Legal fees can range from $5,000 to $40,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the issues, the need for expert testimony, and the time spent in litigation.
  • Hourly rates: Lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, with higher rates for more experienced attorneys or complex custody disputes.
  • Mediation services: If both parents agree to work through mediation, costs typically range from $1,000 to $5,000 or more for the mediation process.

Always ask for a clear cost estimate during your consultation to ensure that you understand the total legal fees and payment structure.

Top Questions to Ask a Child Custody Lawyer

Before hiring a child custody lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure they are the best fit for your case. Some key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with child custody cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, especially if your case involves complex issues like domestic violence, relocation, or paternity disputes.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, offers flat fees for certain services, or requires a retainer, and ask for an estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Inquire about the expected timeline from filing the petition to reaching an agreement or going to trial.
  5. Will you personally handle my case?
Ensure you know who will be managing your case and representing you in court.
  6. Can we pursue mediation or alternative dispute resolution?
Ask whether the lawyer recommends mediation or other forms of dispute resolution to avoid a lengthy court battle.

How to Check the Credibility of a Child Custody Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable child custody lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for family law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in family law and child custody cases.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge the lawyer’s professionalism and success in child custody matters.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on custody cases.
  • Check for certifications: Look for lawyers who are board-certified in family law or have memberships in organizations like the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) or local family law sections.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a child custody lawyer, come prepared with relevant documents and information:

  • Court orders or existing custody agreements: Bring copies of any existing custody or visitation orders for the lawyer to review.
  • Communication with the other parent: Provide copies of emails, texts, or letters regarding custody, visitation, or disputes.
  • List of your child’s needs: Prepare a list of your child’s specific needs, such as medical care, education, and extracurricular activities.
  • Timeline of the case: Outline key events related to your custody case, including changes in living situations or parental involvement.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions about the custody process, legal fees, and the lawyer’s strategy for your case.

By being well-prepared, you can help the lawyer assess your situation effectively and receive the best possible advice for protecting your rights and your child’s well-being.
